The Shocking Case of Miss Maclean

Evil manifests itself in many ways, but this case from 1880 utterly shocked everyone at the time. With echoes of the Staunton and Seddon cases, young, vulnerable and possessing some physical challenges, Annie Maclean basically finds herself alone upon the death of her mother and the departure of her brother to America.

Miss MacLean was possessed of a healthy inheritance.  She had cash, stocks and shares in property until Lewis Paine arrived upon the scene.

Unemployed, married Paine hones in on Miss Maclean and manages to convince her to sign over all of her assets to him.  Once that happens, Miss MacLean is not long for this world.

The cruelty and injustice of the case resonated with Victorians everywhere and is powerful still.  Unusually, we have included the judge’s condemnation to Paine – it is withering.
