Episode 15 - Sylver

In Episode 15 of The Shuffle Curious Podcast, special guest Sylver Acrey talked us through how her shuffle journey began when she witnessed a fellow go-go dancer shuffling on stage, instantly igniting her curiosity. Coming from a background in hip-hop and other dance forms, she was particularly drawn to the intricate footwork that cutting shapes had to offer.

To deepen her understanding and skills, Sylver developed a student-instructor relationship with members of the Mile High Shufflers. Through their guidance, she gradually absorbed various styles from each member, loving the opportunity to explore and incorporate diverse techniques into her own repertoire. This exposure to different styles not only enriched her dance vocabulary, but also fueled her passion for shuffling.

Beyond the physical aspects, Sylver also discovered that shuffling held therapeutic value for her. Struggling with depression and anxiety, she found solace and inspiration in the dance form. Shuffling became a powerful outlet for her emotions, allowing her to break free from the grip of negative thoughts and redirect her focus toward the benefits of movement.

During the episode, the conversation shifted to the dynamics of meetups within the shuffling community. Sylver discussed the significance of these gatherings. She highlighted how meetups serve as confidence boosters, helping shufflers reduce performance anxiety and desensitize themselves to judgment. Moreover, she emphasize the joy of breaking the circle at meetups, fostering a collaborative environment where everyone can participate and contribute to the collective experience.

Sylver's personal journey in shuffling reached a major milestone at the Sonic Bloom festival. Attending the festival alone, she embarked on a transformative soul-searching adventure that deepened her love for shuffling. Amidst the Desert Hearts sunrise set, Sylver discovered a profound connection to the dance. This experience not only enhanced her shuffling skills but also left her feeling renewed and invigorated as she returned from the festival with a strengthened bond to her passion.

Welcome to the Shuffle Curious Podcast! In this special DJ Showcase episode, we're thrilled to feature Mario Delarosa, also known as Sol Sonata, a talented Denver DJ.

Episode 14 - Trent

In this episode of the Shuffle Curious Podcast, our guest Trent McFadden takes us on a journey of his evolution as a dancer. Starting with his passion for bass music, Trent gradually found himself drawn to music that he could shuffle to, particularly house music. As he attended more shows, he became exposed to a variety of genres, which expanded his musical horizons.

Trent's interest in shuffling was piqued when he came across different Instagram accounts, where shufflers showcased their skills through intricate movements and shapes. He found joy in watching people effortlessly bounce to the beat and synchronize their movements with the music. Inspired by these videos, Trent set a personal goal to shuffle at Lost Lands, a festival he would be attending with his friends.

The experience of shuffling at Lost Lands was nothing short of euphoric for Trent. He was completely captivated by the energy and the connection he felt with the music while dancing. It became clear to him that shuffling was more than just a hobby – it was a profound form of self-expression.

Upon moving to Denver, Trent had the opportunity to attend Decadence, a festival that led him to discover the Mile High Shufflers. Finding one's tribe and support system is crucial in any journey, and Trent emphasized the significance of connecting with like-minded individuals who share your passion. The Mile High Shufflers became Trent's dance family, providing him with a supportive community where he could grow as a dancer.

Trent also shared a vulnerable moment in his life when he suffered from a double ankle injury. This setback resulted in a dark period of detachment and disconnection from the dance that had once brought him so much joy. However, Trent emerged from this challenging time as a stronger dancer, gaining a newfound appreciation for the art form. Through this experience, he learned the importance of patience with oneself and the value of embracing different processes in life.

Trent McFadden is a Dancer, DJ, and snowboarder residing in Denver, CO. He is a member of the dance collective, Mile High Shufflers, where he has been supported in his love for dance. He mainly shares his experience with injuries and mental health, which has taught him valuable lessons about how to take care of the body, but ultimately, the mind. His passion for dance/raving is constantly revealing opportunities to experience new activities that life has to offer. Episode 13 - Daniel 

In episode 13 of The Shuffle Curious Podcast, we delve into our first episode to start off our crew series with SideShowShufflers (SSS)! We looked into Daniel Burgess' story, the founder of SSS.

Daniel found EDM through Dance Dance Revolution and anime, and by 2014, Daniel had discovered shuffling while working at a local club. It instantly captivated him. He knew he had found something special and became a student of the dance.

However, Daniel's early experiences with shuffling weren't all smooth sailing. He recounts a time when he was met with disappointment and exclusion from a shuffle circle. Determined to create a more inclusive and positive space, Daniel took it upon himself to start a crew that embodied the values he held dear. He envisioned a community that treated others with the respect and kindness they themselves desired, laying the foundation for SSS.

Thus began Daniel's extraordinary journey, traveling across different communities and throughout the United States to spread The Sideshow Shuffleers' message of inclusivity and positivity. Along the way, he faced numerous trials and tribulations, both mentally and emotionally. The ups and downs of life made leading a crew challenging for him.

Despite the challenges, Daniel remains dedicated to the growth and future of SSS. He encourages new members to leave their mark on the crew, fostering an environment where everyone's unique talents can shine. Furthermore, he actively seeks out new leaders who can rise to the occasion, ensuring that the crew's legacy continues to flourish.

Episode 12 - Roseanne

In episode 12 of The Shuffle Curious Podcast, our guest Roseanne Young takes us through her journey as a shuffle dancer. Raised in a family where dance was cherished, Roseanne's parents played a significant role in nurturing her love for movement. They taught her not to take dancing too seriously and to approach it with a light heart, fostering a healthy outlook on dance and expression.

As Roseanne delved deeper into shuffle dancing, she discovered a world of diverse music genres and dance styles that became intertwined with her dance practice. 

As she progressed, she had a desire to share her passion so Roseanne started teaching shuffle dance classes. Through her teachings, she has exposed many to shuffling. This has resulted in the formation of a community who comes together to celebrate the art form.

Beyond her offline engagements, Roseanne actively participates in the online shuffle dance community. Engaging with fellow dancers and sharing her experiences, she continues to learn and grow through the power of digital connection. Her involvement in various shuffle dance groups through her health coaching endeavors and engaging with other’s online has been very rewarding.

Roseanne Young has been shuffling since the end of 2020. She is married and has 4 boys. She’s a Dental Hygienist, Health Coach, and Myofunctional Therapist. Her favorite hobbies are hiking, runs and walks, wakesurfing, traveling, spending time with her boys and date nights with her husband.

Episode 10 - Ariah

In this episode of The Shuffle Curious Podcast, our guest Ariah Dix took us on a journey through her immersion in the shuffle community. Ariah's inclusive and fun nature has helped those around her and given others permission to be themselves. Growing up with creatives as parents primed Ariah for her shuffle journey. She began as a flow artist, observing shuffling and eventually wanting to learn.

Ariah sought out mentors after deciding to take shuffling seriously and found a local community (Mile High Shufflers) in Denver that quickly led to connections with shufflers across the nation. She traveled and found opportunities to connect with shufflers from all over, including Shuffle Wisdom and Raw Sessions events, where she was able to connect with shufflers in new and serene environments.

Throughout the ups and downs of life, shuffling has grounded Ariah and acted as a form of medicine, which she has also encouraged others to use and embrace. But beyond this, being a part of the battle culture within the shuffle scene has challenged her in many ways, helping her to develop and become a better person.

Overall, this episode highlights Ariah's journey in the shuffle community, her use of movement as medicine, and her involvement in the battle culture, whether that be a spectator or participant. It also showcases how shuffling has helped her through difficult times and connected her with people across the nation.

Episode 9 - Charles 

In this episode of The Shuffle Curious Podcast, I had the pleasure of chatting with Charles Lopez, also known as Bambi, from New York City. He grew up in Queens and now resides in Staten Island. Charles has a deep love for dancing and started off as a breakdancer, but found his way into shuffling at festivals where he was performing and received free tickets. This opened up a whole new world of music and expression for him.

Charles talks about how he connected with the shuffle community and made some special bonds along the way. He draws similarities and differences between the shuffle and breaking communities. Along his shuffled journey, he found many mentors who taught him new moves and techniques.

One of the things that really helped Charles level up in his shuffling was attending live music events. The raw energy of the crowd and the music helped channel new movement and inspiration. Charles also talks about the battle mindset and different strategies to consider when going into a battle.

In addition to his love for shuffling, Charles also has a passion for DJing and producing music. He found mentors who helped him learn how to mix and fell in love with mixing hard techno. He believes that dance may not always be feasible, but sharing music with others is something that can happen for the rest of your life.

At the heart of it all, Charles emphasizes that it's all about the people he surrounds himself with and loves. We had an amazing time talking and I learned so much about his journey in the dance and music world. Tune in to this episode for Charles' story!

Episode 8 - Jesse

In this episode of The Shuffle Curious Podcast, we had a very special out-of-state guest, Jesse Fishman! It was an absolute pleasure speaking to Jesse, as he’s been a friend and mentor to me ever since we met through an online shuffle challenge. Shuffle Crack Heads Unite! 

Jesse talks about his interests and hobbies in skateboarding and bodybuilding, which he believes primed him for his shuffle journey. Jesse shares his first rave experiences and how he was captivated by the shufflers he saw on the dance floor, which he thought were wizards. He became determined to learn and has since dedicated himself to the dance. He also talks about his induction into Nameless Shufflers, a community of shufflers in NYC, and how pivotal they were in his development.

Throughout his journey, Jesse struggled with getting out of his head and more into his body while dancing and developing musicality. However, he found shuffling to be an avenue of freedom and a form of expression, especially when he was in PA school. He shares how much confidence he has built throughout his dance journey, and how he wants others to experience this boost in confidence. Jesse Fishman is a dancer, Physicians Assistant (PA), fitness enthusiast, and occasional video game addict. Born and raised in Staten Island, NY, he’s one of the leaders of Nameless Shufflers, cultivating community, growth, and connection within the NYC shuffle scene. When he is not being a wizard on the dance floor, he is working as a Neurosurgical PA, getting yoked in the gym, or “cracking out” over super smash bros.

Episode 7 - Emeka 

In episode 7 of The Shuffle Curious Podcast, we had guest Emeka Okoronkwo come on and talk about his Shuffle Journey. Emeka expressed his love for shuffling and how attending festivals, battles and visiting other communities have contributed to his journey. The episode begins with a discussion on imposter syndrome and how shufflers often experience it. Emeka then shares his first experience seeing shuffling at a festival and how it inspired him to find other avenues to express himself through music, with shuffling appearing to be the best option. He was moved by the sight of shufflers expressing themselves to the music and having a great time.

Emeka describes the power of attending festivals and how it has contributed to his progression in shuffling. He talks about his experiences at Dream State and EDC Las Vegas, where he was able to immerse himself in the community and gain inspiration from other shufflers. Emeka also talks about his experiences at battles, including the Nameless Battles in New York City and the Mile High Shufflers’ Kill Off, where he got to know other shufflers, and garnered inspiration from their different styles.

Throughout his journey, Emeka has experienced both ups and downs in his progression, which he talks about in detail.. He has found community through shuffling and has even moved to denver to be closer to a community that he has met through the dance. 

The episode also touches on shuffling etiquette and how to properly interact with shufflers in a show environment. This includes topics such as asking for consent when filming shufflers and sharing space with other ravers.

Emeka is an artist currently focused on content creation surrounding dancing but plans to span into other areas. Born and raised in Topeka, KS, he recently moved to Denver in Feb. of 2023 after falling in love with the community and music scene there late in 2022. Emeka frequents any events where he has the chance to stomp bugs, but also has many other interests including, but, not limited to: DJing, fashion, crafting, traveling, cooking/baking, and gaming.
