August 24, 2022 Ep 181: Warrior Call – Dealing with Rising Military Suicide Rates
Frank Larkin is a former Navy SEAL and so was his son Ryan, who died by suicide in 2017. As part of his commitment to the Warrior Call initiative, Larkin says he wants to educate people about undiagnosed physical injuries to the brain that warriors may suffer during their service, as with Ryan, that can spark a downward spiral.

Larkin has served as a Navy SEAL, as a Maryland State Trooper-Flight Paramedic, as a special agent for 21 years in the U.S. Secret Service rising to deputy assistant director and chief technology officer, and for nearly four years as the U.S. Senate Sergeant at Arms. He also served as a senior leader in the Department of Defense's Joint Improvised Explosive Device Defeat Organization, the combat support agency tasked with countering IED's and extremist organizations employing them against U.S. forces, and in senior positions at Raytheon Corp., Lockheed Martin Corp. and SAP National Security Services. He volunteers as a firefighter-paramedic with the Annapolis, Maryland, Fire Department.

WHY WARRIOR CALL IS ESSENTIAL:

Many of those who are suffering are not seeking help or treatment, thus reinforcing the need for a call to these warriors from a former battle buddy, friend or family member.

Up to two-thirds of veterans who take their own lives have had no contact with the Department of Veterans Affairs.  
The COVID pandemic has only increased isolation and disconnection.  

According to the VA, researchers have identified social isolation as "arguably the strongest and most reliable predictor of suicidal ideation, [suicide] attempts and lethal suicidal behavior."  
Invisible wounds linked to an underlying and undiagnosed traumatic brain injury can mirror many mental health conditions, underscoring the need to connect with service members and veterans and steer them to services.  The rapid unraveling of Afghanistan has spurred anguish and frustration among those who served there.

Whether you are a veteran, active-duty service member, national guard, family member or friend, you can make a difference by connecting with someone who is wearing or who has worn the uniform. Connecting can facilitate honest dialogue, create a desire to stay in contact and help define a viable path forward.

June 29, 2022 Ep 173: Live Backwards to Move Forward
Sounds strange, right? But today, everything is backward, and in order to move forward, you need to reverse your thought process in life. The contrarian is considered the oddball, but that oddball is, in most cases, doing things right. So why not be on oddball? Who cares what people are saying around you? Most of them weigh 250 plus pounds, are flat broke, and miserable. This is a time when following the herd will take you straight off the cliff with them. Because they are blind to the real world, they have no idea the cliff is coming, and because of the way they are living their conformist life, that cliff is inevitable. Simply don't go off the cliff!

About Myles in his own words: I was born and raised in Adelaide, Australia. Adelaide was a wonderful place. Clean, great community, great weather, great food. I mean the idyllic location. My parents were not wealthy, but nor were they poor. My father worked all of his life for the same company. My mother was a stay-at-home parent. My parents owned their own home and paid it off. They struggled financially but were able to put me through private school. I was an only child – I guess I didn’t have to share their focus with another, so I got lucky.

I had always been interested in technology from a young age. I was such an avid learner that I would go to great extremes to seek out things and get involved in clubs, community groups, etc. I rode my bike everywhere – even for hours to the city’s center to spend my Sunday afternoons in the public library. Soaking up every bit of knowledge I could get. Strange things that people often didn’t pay attention to. But I did.

One day I got exposed to CB Radios. This was in the 1970s. I became obsessed (as I often did with things). I learned about electronics, physics, communications, etc. This led me towards computers, and eventually, I bought one of the first personal computers – in 1978, the TRS-80 Model 1 computer. I learned everything about programming that computer, and it became everything to me. As the computer industry evolved, so did I. I started a software company and became one of the few experts in software development in Adelaide – getting gigs to write software for government departments, big corporations, etc., and I was still not even 20 years old. My passion for technology was matched with a business passion, which started well before I discovered technology. I guess business was in my DNA.

In 1989, I moved to the United States, settling in Los Angeles. I realized that the ability to migrate from one place to another was a life-changing experience. It taught me to embrace everything I found within my grasp, learning about business in the USA, I got involved in the music industry, and I was able to leverage my computer programming experience to land work in some early startups – one of which became Amgen, the world’s largest biotechnology corporation. Although I spent much of the next 30 years living in the USA, I never lost touch with my home of Australia, and in the late 1990s moved back there for many years before returning to the USA. In 2002 I moved to Scottsdale, Arizona, and I’ve lived here since.

I am a self-made business owner. I don’t have a job. I do have clients and I do work on software projects and data centers, etc. today. It is because this is what I love to do. It isn’t because this is my career. I’ve never embraced that concept. I think if you are blessed to find your calling early in life and you can turn that into an income earner, you will embrace that far more than a defined “career” that people have to convince themselves that they love to do. I got lucky in that regard. But it was more that at a young age I was passionate to learn things. I still am. I just can’t learn them in a classroom, or a lecture hall, or books. I have to go out and see things with my own eyes and touch things with my own hands.

In the words of that great hairband, Whitesnake, "Here we go again." When it comes to The 2nd Amendment and gun control, well, it is a bit polarizing to say the least. Most, may not know this, but I have been around firearms since age 7 to include 20 years in the military and law enforcement. Before some of you call me a racist and gun-toting redneck, hold on a second, you may be a little surprised by my position on the subject.

I firmly believe, we need to have a rational conversation on the subject that makes sense to most. You can never satisfy everyone, so "most" is the closest you are going to get on any subject, let alone gun control.

Today, I give you my common-sense solution to the problem that I think most could understand and get behind. I'm tired of insider trading politicians and purple-haired nut jobs telling the rest of us how it should be. Interestingly, the people who have the least experience on the subject seem to scream the loudest.

So let's cut the noise and get down to the facts that make sense to the people who actually live in reality. I know a crazy idea these days, but I think it is important, as we will never solve the problem by two sides pushing extreme views on the subject.

June 15, 2022 Ep 171: Free College for Everyone
There is no free lunch in this world, especially when it involves the government. Today, we have yet another financial crisis looming: outstanding college loan debt, which is estimated to be in the range of 1.8 trillion. I have a little experience in this area as I have three degrees, which I paid for the most part on my own, and I had this crazy thing called a job while enrolled in classes for all three. In addition, I was a college professor for a while at a private institution. So I have seen and been involved in this debacle from both sides of the fence.

You may ask yourself, what does this have to do with you? Well, at this moment we are experiencing record-high inflation and government debt, which I will tell you is not a good combination. By bailing out people, who lack the ability to think and plan properly, then rack up endless student loan debt is not going to help. Matter of fact, that will pump more funny money into the economy, thus causing more inflation. And you should also ask, why should you be responsible for someone's college loan debt? That is a very important question to ask, I believe.

Today, Rob Kendall and I (who also paid his own way through college) discuss what this is all about. Not only that, we give solutions, especially for those who want to go to college, but do it responsibly without racking up life burdening debt.

The key is to make the right financial moves, and ignore most of the advice the financial institutions and federal government are telling us, as they do not have your best interests at heart.

Today, I bring back to the show oil expert Bill Herrick to bring us up to date on why gas prices are so damn high, and going higher! Today, I will share with you the methods to make better and more informed decisions in life. I guarantee the simplicity in the process will amaze you.

I often get asked how in the world I'm able to make difficult decisions to guide my life in the right direction. Trust me, I'm no genius or have super Simple Life powers to help me accomplish this. The most critical element in order to help guide me in my life is gathering and processing information. Most importantly, by not doing it with Google searches or the internet, but with real-life experiences on a daily basis.

I was recently having a conversation with a friend of mine, and told him how I had gathered a bunch of life intelligence during my day before we met for lunch. A funny look came over his face, and he said you need to share that. He said, “most people just don't think that way”. I had no idea it was a unique way to gather information, so yes, I realized I needed to do an episode on it. I sometimes forget being a former criminal investigator, I look at and gather information differently than most people, well, because it was my job, and I did it for a long time. The best way to put it, is these traits are ingrained in me, and most of the time, I don't even know I'm doing it.

Welcome to another episode of "Ask Gary Anything." This is where you, the audience, get to send in your questions about anything, and I will answer them. That is right, you heard it... anything, because that is how I roll! On a fairly regular basis I pick questions sent to me from my ever growing list, and answer them on this podcast.

1. (Geoff S) Do you have a bug out plan, and if so what do you think are the essential considerations /components? If not, why not?

2. (Kristy P) Do you or any of your friends suffer from tinnitus? If so, how do you cope? (I know this is a common ailment for veterans. Other than white noise, which isn’t always feasible, none of the DIY solutions seem to work. I have tried limiting salt/caffeine, supplements, acupuncture, and a hearing aid (for a trial period of 3 months). Therapy is expensive and not covered by insurance.)

3. (Ben L) What are your thoughts on liability waivers for events on private property?

Often in the permaculture movement, land owners host workshops that invite people they don't personally know and require visitors to sign waivers.

Do you recommend any templates or key points to include in drafting such a document, assuming you'd want a final review/edit by a legal professional?
