Colossians 1:25 (NIV): I have become its (the gospel’s) servant by the commission God gave me to present to you the word of God in its fullness.”

Paul has been showing us what it looks like to be a servant for God.

Yesterday, Paul showed us that suffering comes when we spread the Good News. While many of us would feel sorry for ourselves, Paul says that he rejoices in the suffering because he knows what he's helping strengthen Christ's Body.

Today, Paul teaches us about the word "commission." This word has some really cool history behind it, and once you learn it, this verse comes alive!

Colossians 1:24, NIV: "Now I rejoice in what I am suffering for you, and I fill up in my flesh what is still lacking in regard to Christ's afflictions, for the sake of his body, which is the church."

Colossians 1:24, NLT: "I am glad when I suffer for you in my body, for I am participating in the sufferings of Christ that continue for his body, the church."

In Colossians 1:23 Paul encourages believers to stand strong and immovable in what they know to be true about Jesus Christ. Paul says he is a servant sent to proclaim that Truth to every creature under heaven. 

And then he writes verse 24 and leaves us all scratching our heads. 

The interpretation of this verse is heavily disputed, particularly when Paul mentions "Christ’s afflictions."

22 But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation— 23 if you continue in your faith, established and firm, and do not move from the hope held out in the gospel. This is the gospel that you heard and that has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven, and of which I, Paul, have become a servant.

In Colossians 1:22, Paul says that Christ’s death reconciled us back to God. And because of our belief in Christ, we are holy, without blemish, and free from accusation.

However… verse 23 begins with an interesting word “If…”

So, catch this here…you are pure and blameless, “if you continue in your faith, established and firm, and do not move from the hope held out in the gospel.”

Does this little 2-letter word "if" indicate that we can lose our salvation?

That's an interesting question.

Colossians 1:21-22 (NIV) 21 Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior. 22 But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation

Yesterday, we learned that it pleased God to reconcile us back to Him through Christ’s blood on the cross. 

Paul continues with that idea today here in Colossians one verse 21.

Colossians 1:19 (NIV) For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him 

Colossians 1:18 (NIV) And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy.

Beginning in Colossians chapter 1 verse 15, Paul writes that Jesus is the image of the invisible God. He is the firstborn, or the supreme authority over all creation. He created all things and holds all things together. 

Today, Paul is narrowing down his focus from Christ being supreme over everything to Christ being supreme over the Church body.

Colossians 1:17 (NIV): He is before all things, and in him, all things hold together.

Paul writes a letter to the Colossians to refute false teachings creeping into the fairly new church in Colossae. Before he barely begins writing, he breaks out into a theologically rich hymn about Jesus Christ starting in verse 15. 

So far we've learned that Christ is:

1. The exact likeness of God in human form
2. Firstborn over all creation (meaning most honored, most esteemed)
3. Created all things

Colossians 1:16 (NIV) For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. 

We’ve been exploring a powerful hymn that Paul includes in his letter to the Colossians to teach the supremacy of Christ.
