Philippians 4:21–23 (NIV): 21 Greet all God’s people in Christ Jesus. The brothers and sisters who are with me send greetings. 22 All God’s people here send you greetings, especially those who belong to Caesar’s household.  23 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen.

Today, we end our verse-by-verse study of Philippians.

Philippians 4:18 (NIV): 18 I have received full payment and have more than enough. I am amply supplied, now that I have received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent. They are a fragrant offering, an acceptable sacrifice, pleasing to God.

Paul has been teaching us that every time we sacrificially give, God credits our "spiritual" bank account.

In today's verse, Paul uses a really cool Old Testament image to represent what your giving "smells" like to God!

Philippians 4:17 (NIV): 17 Not that I desire your gifts; what I desire is that more be credited to your account.

Paul has been expressing his appreciation to the church in Philippi for their financial gift.  More than anything, however, Paul is thrilled at what giving does for the giver. God sees you when you sacrificially give to another and rewards you accordingly.

Philippians 4:14–16 (NIV): 14 Yet it was good of you to share in my troubles. 15 Moreover, as you Philippians know, in the early days of your acquaintance with the gospel, when I set out from Macedonia, not one church shared with me in the matter of giving and receiving, except you only; 16 for even when I was in Thessalonica, you sent me aid more than once when I was in need.

Paul walks a fine line in today’s verses. He has spent his entire letter telling the believers that joy and contentment come from your relationship with God and NOT in what you have in your physical world.  

So, how does he handle thanking the church in Philippi for their generous financial gift? Because the truth be told, if I was reading this letter as a believer in Philippi, I might be a little offended that he didn’t really need the money that I sent.

Philippians 4:12–13 (NIV): 12 I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. 13 I can do all this through him who gives me strength.

Philippians 4:13 is one of the most quoted and loved verses in the Bible. Many of us have memorized it.

Sports teams have it written on banners.  Youth groups have it printed on t-shirts.

However, what most people don’t understand is that it doesn’t necessarily mean what they think it means.

Most people use this verse to cheer them onto victory. But that’s not at all what Paul is saying.

Philippians 4:8-9 (NIV): Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. 9 Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.

Isn't it amazing that we still deal with the same mind "traps" that people 2,000 years ago dealt with? Our minds tend to get trapped on negative things like "will I have enough money?" or "I'll never be good enough to do what I want."

Paul knew our tendency to think the worst and he gives us God's cure in today's Bible verse.
