Philippians 4:2–3 (NIV): 2 I plead with Euodia and I plead with Syntyche to be of the same mind in the Lord. 3 Yes, and I ask you, my true companion, help these women since they have contended at my side in the cause of the gospel, along with Clement and the rest of my co-workers, whose names are in the book of life.

In today's 2-minute Bible study podcast, Paul calls two women out on the carpet for causing division within the church body in Philippi. 

Do you think those ladies had any idea that their names would be in the Bible for all of us to read about their problem 2,000 years later? Paul never says what the issue was, but we can assume that their problem caused division within the church.

Philippians 4:1 (NIV): Therefore, my brothers and sisters, you whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm in the Lord in this way, dear friends!” 

Today, we start the final chapter of Philippians. Yay! I love this chapter. There are many wonderful verses that we have the honor of studying.

In the first verse of chapter 4, it’s as if Paul is reminiscing about the believers in Philippi. As he thinks about how blessed he is to have been a part of their Christian journey, he oozes joy into this sentience. 

Paul calls them his “crown.” What an interesting  way to describe someone you love. Lol. What exactly is he saying here? 

Knowing the history and culture of that time will bring this verse alive.

Philippians 3:21 (NIV): 21 who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.

Philippians 3:18–19 (NIV): 18 For, as I have often told you before and now tell you again even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. 19 Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is set on earthly things.

In Philippians chapter three, Paul appeals to the church in Philippi to follow his example as he pursues Christ above everything else in his life.

 Paul knows that there are people who may appear to be followers of Christ, but in reality, they reject the true gospel message that Paul preaches.

Philippians 3:17, NIV: "Join together in following my example, brothers and sisters, and just as you have us as a model, keep your eyes on those who live as we do."

Philippians 3:17, ESV: "Brothers, join in imitating me, and keep your eyes on those who walk according to the example you have in us."

Philippians 3:17, KJV: "Brethren, be followers together of me, and mark them which walk so as ye have us for an ensample."

Paul lived a life that any God-fearing Jew would have envied. He had everything, but Paul said it was all garbage. All that matters is living for Christ alone.

Paul knew that some would wonder what living a life for Christ alone looked like, so he encourages the church in Philippi to be imitators of him.

Philippians 3:15–16 (NIV): 15 All of us, then, who are mature should take such a view of things. And if on some point you think differently, that too God will make clear to you. 16 Only let us live up to what we have already attained.

Philippians 3:15–16 (KJV): 15 Let us, therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded: and if in any thing ye be otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this unto you. 16 Nevertheless, whereto we have already attained, let us walk by the same rule, let us mind the same thing.

Philippians 3:15–16 (NLT): 15 Let all who are spiritually mature agree on these things. If you disagree on some point, I believe God will make it plain to you. 16 But we must hold on to the progress we have already made.

Paul encourages believers in Philippians chapter 3 that we are to:

•  Pursue Christlikeness every day and 
• To keep our eyes on the prize of living life for eternity with Christ.
