1 Peter is written to Christians experiencing trials and difficulties. Peter is writing to encourage and strengthen their faith. In our last lesson, we considered the importance of hope and that our hope in Christ is untouchable. Our hope in Christ cannot be taken away or pried away from our hands. Continuing in our lessons (1 Peter 1:13-25), we notice that hope in Christ is not only a future hope but a hope for today as well.

Following Jesus does not mean a life without difficulties and hardships. As a people, as humans, we experience setbacks, loss, pain, trials, and hardships. Some experiences are common to us all. However, following Christ and his example of love, humility, and compassion, following his example of a life honoring the Father, will bring other challenges as those who stand out from the backdrop of the world.

1 Peter 1:1-2
We are beginning a new series as we explore the letter of 1 Peter together. 1 Peter is a circular letter. It was written to churches that were scattered throughout the region of Asia Minor, modern-day Turkey. These Christians faced hostility and harassment because of their faith in Jesus (2:12, 3:16, 4:16). With the help of Silas (5:12), Peter wrote to encourage these Christians in their suffering.

It was early in the morning following the Sabbath Day when several women came to the tomb of Jesus. They brought spices that they had prepared for the body of Jesus. But, upon their arrival, what they found was unexpected. The stone was rolled back from the tomb, and the body of Jesus was not there. What had happened?

As the Passover Plot unfolds, we pick up our series in the Garden of Gethsemane (Lk. 22:39-48), where, under cover of night, Jesus is handed over, arrested, and placed on trial.

On the night Jesus was betrayed, he shared a meal with his disciples. Jesus came to Jerusalem as the Feast of Unleavened Bread, called Passover, drew near. A plot was underway as the chief priest, and the scribes sought how they might kill him. One of Jesus' close disciples conspires against him (Lk. 22:1-6). Why this meal? What is the significance, and what is Jesus doing here at the table?

Jesus sends out this wave of disciples to prepare the way for the towns and villages He is about to visit. When Jesus arrives, He announces the good news of God's kingdom. Much of Jesus' teaching through this section is in the form of parables. Amid this building tension, with Jesus setting His face towards Jerusalem and the cross, we find three teachings of Jesus about lost things: the Lost Sheep, the Lost Coin, and the Lost Son (Lk. 15). The kingdom of God is not some exclusive club or group, God's kingdom is for all people.

Reading the Bible was always a struggle. Today it is still a struggle. I have to take my time and read fairly slowly if I want anything to make sense after I am done reading. However, unlike when I was younger, reading the Bible for me today is something I look forward to. It’s something I greatly enjoy and I hope you do as well. In this episode, I share several tips for Bible reading and study.

We have been studying the interactions of Jesus. As we do so, we are asking what we can learn from these interactions and conversations. What do we discover about Jesus? Our purpose is to know Jesus better and to draw closer to Him. Today, we turn to (Luke 7). Jesus heals a centurion's servant and raises a widow's son from the dead. Through these accounts, we see the power, authority, and compassion of God with us.
