Luke records several miracles in (Lk. 5), a man who is cleansed of leprosy and a paralytic man who is healed. After this, Luke tells the account of Jesus calling Matthew (Levi), a tax collector. Matthew leaves his duties, invites guests to a party for Jesus, and follows him. At first, these events may seem unconnected. However, I believe they reveal a deep purpose of Jesus.

As crowds pressed Jesus to hear the word of God proclaimed, he stood by the Lake of Gennesaret (or the Sea of Galilee). Then, seeing two fishing boats, Jesus steps into a boat belonging to Simon (Peter). Asking to be pushed out from the shore, Jesus sits in the boat to teach.

After the temptation of Jesus in the wilderness, he returns to his hometown of Nazareth (Luke 4:14). Following the life and ministry of Jesus through conversations and interactions, we follow him into a local synagogue. He has traveled through the region of Galilee, and news of him has spread. Jesus, in the synagogue, stands to read from the scroll of Isaiah. What do we learn about his purpose as others reject him at Nazareth?

Following the larger story of the Bible, we begin to see how Jesus tested in the wilderness is not an "odd" story. Instead, this account follows a biblical pattern. Just as Israel crossed the Red Sea and entered the wilderness, Jesus crossed the waters of baptism to enter the wilderness. But, unlike Israel and the first humans, Jesus passes the test. This is because Jesus follows the wisdom and word of God, whereas others have followed their wisdom. Jesus leads a new exodus of God's people as the faithful Servant.

In our series, we are talking about conversations and interactions Jesus had with others. Through these interactions, we are considering what we can learn about Jesus and God's wisdom for us today. We began last week with Simeon from (Lk. 2), where Simeon, looking at Jesus, said, "For my eyes have seen your salvation" (Lk. 2:30). Through Simeon, we see the faithfulness of God, the hope of Messiah Jesus, and the promise of God's kingdom. Continuing our journey, we visit the banks of the Jordan River (Jn. 1) and a strange man calling Israel to repentance.

I have talked with Christians who, like me, desire to draw closer to the Lord. How, though, can we accomplish this? How can we walk closer to the Lord and honor him each day? This short series will explore these questions as we consider four ways to draw closer to the Lord.
Prayer
Connecting In Community
Bible Study
Following the example of Christ
Let's consider the importance of prayer.

In our study of Colossians, we come to a section of Paul's letter where he teaches about Christian households in a first-century Greco-Roman culture, which was highly authoritarian. How are we to understand Paul's words in our culture today?

As those who have died with Christ and been raised with Him, we have a new identity. Our identity is not in the past or things opposed to God. Therefore, as those with a new identity, our character and lives should reflect the new identity of Christ. In Christ, we are a renewed community and a new body, our identity is now in Him.
