Even considering the importance of prayer, it is still something many Christians struggle with. Growing in the Lord will require being connected to the family of God. Fellowship is a word we often associate with meals. Although meals can draw us closer together, fellowship is much more nuanced, as used in the New Testament. Growth happens when we are connected to the body of Christ.

Most of the time, growth happens outside of our comfort zone. This can be difficult because most of us like our comfort zone. Routines ground us, and they are constants in our lives. The comfort zone is not all bad. Faith, security, and trust in the Lord are comfortable and things we can build our lives on. How do we balance life outside the comfort zone and our need for growth with remaining secure in the Lord?

Growing and maturing in the Lord is not all about us. At times, we approach growing in the Lord like we approach other goals. When we do so, we have a tendency to focus on our abilities, discipline, and strengths. Often, like with other goals, we become discouraged, overwhelmed, and frustrated. Christian growth requires a different approach.

As the gospel of John closes, we circle back to the beginning. The disciples move from being huddled in fear to peace in the presence of Jesus.
