In (Jn. 13), we are approaching the final act of the gospel. Jesus has made His entrance into Jerusalem, the hour of the cross has come. In the following few scenes, Jesus will begin teaching and preparing His disciples for His departure.

JAMES 5:7-8

“Therefore be patient, brethren, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, waiting patiently for it until it receives the early and latter rain. You also be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand.” (NKJV)

Jesus has raised Lazarus from the dead. He has been anointed King as Mary anointed His feet with oil. He has made His entrance into Jerusalem. People lined the streets to greet Him. Yet, a plot is underway to take His life—all of this as Jesus steps closer to the cross.

Jesus Enters Jerusalem

People gather to line the streets as a King enters Jerusalem. Exclaiming His praises, they rush out to greet Him. People had heard rumors of Him. Was this the One spoken of by their ancestors?

ANOINTED AT BETHANY

Have you ever read a book where you start to see something in one of the characters you don't entirely trust? You see glimpses and foreshadowing of what is coming. For example, in (John 12), Jesus is anointed at Bethany. A scene develops, and we are given a hint of what will happen.

John 11 is a very personal passage. We are confronted with the loss of a close personal friend of Jesus, Lazarus. In this loss, we see the humanity of Jesus. We see how this loss hurts and the pain it causes Jesus.

John 10 is a fascinating passage in which Jesus refers to Himself as "The Good Shepherd." Consistent with John's Gospel, there are all types of reactions to Jesus and His words. Some understand and believe, while others pick up stones to kill Him.

Gospel of John (chapter 9): Healing the Blind Man

Jesus has left the temple, and he passes by a man who was blind from birth. In a culture where there is no safety net for a person with disabilities, Jesus sees a man who must depend on the charity of others for his daily survival. Likely, the man’s parents can no longer care for him, as they lack financial ability. Thus, the blind man is left to beg for his daily needs.

The Light of the World

In John 8, Jesus says, “I am the light of the world.” (ref. Jn. 8:12), one of seven such statements Jesus makes concerning Himself in John’s gospel. Earlier, (ref. Jn. 6:35), Jesus said, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.” Each of these statements reveals something about the true identity of Jesus. In (Jn. 8), as Jesus speaks of Himself as the “light of the world,” He would continue to say, “He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” (ref. Jn. 8:12). How is Jesus the light of life, and what do His words reveal about Him?

“Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”

John (7) begins with the Feast of Tabernacles. This marks a section of John’s gospel around significant meals or feasts and continues through (Jn. 10) with the Feast of Dedication or Hanukkah (ref. Jn. 10:22). From here, John moves to the raising of Lazarus in (Jn. 11). In many ways, the first significant movement of John’s gospel builds to the raising of Lazarus. We are left to consider the pressing question of who Jesus is.
