How can we run the race faithfully so that we can hear the words "Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.” (ref. Matt. 25: 23).

Who is Jesus? This is a question many people have asked. As we have studied the Gospel of Mark, we have made mention several times that Jesus is just not what people were expecting. The kingdom of God, the kingdom that Jesus establishes, is not what people were expecting. In fact who Jesus is and what Jesus is doing seems to be completely different from what many expected.

Have you ever walked into a room and just felt the tension? We may have heard the expression, "The tension is so thick you could cut it with a knife." In Mark 8 we really feel the tension that is developing between competing views of God's kingdom and the kingdoms of the world. In this chapter is the account of Jesus feeding the four thousand. However, this account is connected to the larger narrative that we find in Mark's Gospel.

Jesus has just finished teaching about what truly makes a person unclean. It is not what is on the outside that makes a person unclean, but it is the heart that defiles a person (ref. Mk. 7:15). In an area where He should have found faith, Jesus saw those who honor him in word only, and their hearts were far from Jesus. (ref. Mk. 7:6). However, it is in this Gentile region that Jesus finds people of great faith. A woman whose daughter has an unclean spirit and a man who is deaf and mute. Could it be that Jesus is providing a valuable, practical, hands-on lesson for His disciples about the kingdom of God? I can only join others in speculating. I do believe there is a connection, and a reason Mark is pointing us to these accounts.

We all have routines and traditions. It may be something as simple as brushing our teeth in the morning. Even this simple task is a tradition, a habit. In Mark 7, Jesus is questioned about traditions. Some of the Pharisees and scribes ask Jesus a question. His disciples are eating with unwashed hands, and this raises questions for some. The disciples of Jesus did not specially wash their hands before eating, which is not in keeping with the traditions of the elders. Traditions and habits can either be good or bad. They can draw us closer to the Lord, or they can push us away from Him. As Christians, we should desire to please the Lord in our lives. Our traditions and habits should reflect this desire.
