Jesus leaves the region of Galilee and travels up to Jerusalem. There was a pool there known as Bethesda. Here, many sick people, blind, lame, and paralyzed gathered at this pool hoping to be healed. Although this healing, or sign, is an important sign, the account becomes much more about Jesus’ healing on the Sabbath than a man who has been healed.

Continuing in John’s gospel, we follow two very different conversations. Nicodemus, among the religious elite of his day, and a Samaritan woman, whose life has left her longing to satisfy her thirst. Although these conversations have many different contrasts, John focuses us on the Messiah. In Jesus, we can experience new life from above, and waters springing up to everlasting life. Come and see Jesus as John reveals Him.

Jesus interrupted the activities of the temple. What does John intend for us to see? Jesus is the fulfillment of the temple and sacrificial system and in Jesus heaven and earth come together.

Water to Wine

The gospel of John, as others have described, is like stepping into an art museum. You can pass by the paintings just noticing them and get an idea of what the artist intends to represent, or you can stand in front of the picture and just get lost as you stare deeply at it. The longer you look, the more detail you begin to see, and you begin to see things you did not notice at first.

We begin an exciting journey through the Gospel of John. Through this gospel, Jesus is revealed as John shares with us the life and ministry of Jesus, the Son of God. In this lesson, a brief introduction of John and the Word who became flesh and dwelt among us.

Through the Gospel of Mark, there have been ups and downs, twists and turns, in following Jesus’ kingdom message. As His disciples have walked with Him, they have struggled to put all the pieces together. Jesus often said and did the unexpected. In Mark 15, the narrative of Mark’s gospel shifts to the foot of the cross. Jesus is mocked, the Messiah has been led to Golgotha, they have stripped His clothes and beat Him. Hung on the cross, after Jesus breathed His last breath, He was taken down. His body wrapped in fine linen laid in a tomb that hewed out of rock. A stone was rolled against the opening of the grave to seal it shut.

EPISODE SUMMARY

In (Mk. 14), we read of another significant shift in the narrative of Mark's Gospel. From this point, Jesus will not be speaking and teaching publicly. Mark will not record any more miracles. Here is a shift to the final steps in the mission of Jesus, the mission to the cross. Mark 14 is a chapter with so many references to the Old Testament and God's deliverance of Israel from the hand of Egypt. This background provides much of the context for (Mark 14).

The events leading up to (Mark 13) have moved quickly. In Mark 11, Jesus entered Jerusalem, He cleansed the Temple, and His authority has been questioned. Jesus spoke in parable, speaking against the religious leaders, (Mk. 12), and has been tested by the religious leaders as they have asked questions of Jesus trying to trap Him. Moving to the text in Mark 13, I believe it is essential to keep all of these events in our minds to help in our understanding of (Mark 13) and the things Jesus says.

MARK 11:28 (NKJV) “And they said to Him, "By what authority are You doing these things? And who gave You this authority to do these things?"

Although they question Jesus, Jesus turns this question around, "I also will ask you one question; then answer Me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things: The baptism of John—was it from heaven or from men? Answer Me." (Mk. 11:29, 30). 

The religious leaders do not provide an answer to Jesus' question. They are in a bit of a trap. If they were to say John's baptism was from heaven, then the obvious question would be, "Why then did you not believe him?" (ref. Mk. 11:31). If they were to say John's baptism was from man, not from God's authority or heaven, they feared what the people might do because they saw John as a prophet of God. So, they do not answer Jesus' question.

Through Mark’s gospel one of the themes introduced is the kingdom of God (ref. Mk. 1:1; 14). Part of understanding Mark’s account is understanding the good news of the kingdom: God’s rule and reign on the earth. However, as we move along in the narrative, we begin to see that Jesus’ view and understanding of God’s kingdom is not what many understood or expected God’s kingdom to be. Many had expected God’s Messiah (Jesus) to overthrow political systems and deliver an oppressed people from the Roman rule of the first century.
