The Skate Creative podcast

My guests this week are Neil Macdonald from science VS life and Quentin Delille from the Beyond boards podcast.

Quentin is a French podcaster and has interviewed many important and inspirational skateboarders about their careers or as part of the skateboarding industry. His podcast, beyond boards has released 36 episodes talking to amazing people from all aspects of skate culture about their lives and experience.

Neil is writer and journalist who has worked for sidewalk magazine, slam city’s website and north magazine to name but a few. He also has maintain’s the instagram account “Science Vs Life” in which he chronicles the history of skateboarding through scans of his magazine collection. Neil has embarked on writing a new book about the history of UK skateboarding from 1987-2002 .

In this episode I talk to Quentin and Neil about starting their various projects and what keeps them inspired.

We also picked one video each to discuss.

This weeks guest is josh Stewart. Josh is a film maker and runs theories of Atlantis a web shop and distributer.

Josh’s series of Static videos starting in the late nineties introduced the world to different aspects of American skateboarding showing more creativity and showcased josh’s style and artistry as a film maker.

Josh’s aesthetic as a film maker and editor embrace the cityscape in all it contrasts witch make the city’s them selves just as big a star as the Skateboarding happening on film.

This weeks guest on the podcast is John Rattray.

John works in consumer strategies for Nike.

Before this he was a professional skateboarder riding for blueprint and zero skateboards as well as having pro shoes for Savier and Osiris shoes.

After the death by suicide of his sister Katrina in 2011 John started campaigning for mental heath awareness with his projects the good egg and more recently “why so sad ?”.

Through these projects and his platforms as a pro skateboarder he has helped raise funds for Mental heath Scotland and the Ben Reamers foundation.

In this conversation with John we talk frankly about mental heath and also about the subject of suicide just to flag that for anybody in advance who might be sensitive to these issues.

John is also having an event at the loading bay skate park in Glasgow on Saturday August 6th.

Prior to this part of his career he was a pro skateboarder for Unabomber and blueprint skateboards. Vaughn was part of a generation of British skateboarders that pushed boundaries and pioneered technical and switch tricks to the next level. Vaughn’s style and consistency made him stand out from an early age and he was picked to ride for Unabomber from its inception.

This weeks guest on the podcast is Neil Urwin. Neil is general manager for Europe, the Middle East and Africa at Toms shoes. Neil was also one of the most prominent professional skateboarders of his generation, riding for new deal, reaction, dc shoes and zoo york.

I talk to Neil about growing up in south shields, starting skateboarding, getting sponsored by new deal in the 1990’s and filming for their promo video, his first trips to the USA, managing tours for visiting teams and story’s from the road, and just who it was he and Kingy had to firm but fair with.

Ben is a writer, journalist, commentator and teacher. For over 20 years he was editor of Sidewalk magazine.

Ben, Andy horsely, Chris Forder and Wig Worland changed the way the world saw British skateboarding when they started Sidewalk and gave exposure to numerous generation’s of skateboarding talent.

Through Ben’s writing and sidewalks unique sense of humour he exposed a side of British skateboarding that was not just London centric but reflected the diversity of the entire U.K., showing the grit and grime but also the beauty of everything it had to offer.

Ben has been journalistically and a lot of the time ,physically been the voice of British skateboarding as his commentary at many competitions has become legendary. Ben has always brought intelligence, wit and a rye sense of humour to everything he has done in the massive contribution he has made to skateboarding culture.
