Just when we thought we'd seen the last Bode Miller gate bash, the former four time World Champion has announced his intentions to return to World Cup competition for one final go in 2016-2017. But there's more than a high protein diet and a few squat workouts standing in between the 38 year old racing legend and the start gate.

According to Courthouse News Service, Miller has sued Head USA, alleging that his former sponsor won't let him even attempt a comeback unless he uses the company's skis.

A year and a half later, Miller is looking to return to World Cup action with his new sponsor, Bomber Skis. A Manhattan based luxury brand and artisan ski company of which he is part owner.

Head USA contends that Miller's return with another brand is a breach of contract, an agreement that says that he cannot compete in a World Cup or World Championship event for a full two calendar years, as of April 30, 2015, according to the Daily Mail.

Seth Morrison and K2 have parted ways after 24 years. That in itself is mammoth industry news. But set against industry background and rumour, the news potentially becomes all the more significant. The entire K2 marketing department has turned over in the past year or so and the rumours are they are struggling by with only a skeleton team at the helm. Seth has always been a figurehead of K2 and his departure along with that of their branding team might indicate a whole new direction or something more serious.

At the same time, yet more rumours suggesting that Newell-Rubbermaid, who recently bought out Jarden Corporation are looking to offload the wintersports wing they inherited.

The industry wisdom is that it in fact the $2.74bn Winter Sports wing, which includes K2 Sports, Marmot, Volkl, Marker, Full Tilt and Line and numerous snowboard brands will be the first thing to be offloaded or cut.

David Steele is a skier out of Whitefish, Montana, who regularly frequents Glacier National Park for self-prescribed sufferfests.

In his most recent vid, he goes skiing, on September 9, in a whiteout.

He walked nearly 20 miles round trip and went up 5,000 feet before even putting his ski boots on, but said it was worth it.

He managed turns on three inches of freshies on top of a melt/freeze crust of graupel on top of old snow patches.

Showdown Montana had 10″ of snow and people went skiing there on Labor Day, September 6th.

Whistler, B.C. got it’s first snow today.

It’s still officially summer, and the ski season is still a ways off, but we love seeing this early season snow. It just gets the stoke going all over North America.

More snow is forecast in Whistler throughout today and on Monday/Tuesday.

Jack Clulee slipped from the lift in Mt Hutt before his father could lower the safety bar. Quick thinking ski patrollers saved the boy from injury.

As the two borded the lift the boy slipped and his father, Kevin, grabbed him and was able to hold on to him by his jacket.

The lift coninued and the child was left dangling 10m above the ground.

He would undoubtedly have been seriously injured in any fall.

Quick thinking ski patollers grabbed the safety cushions from around a nearby pylon and held them in place underneath the boy with the help of passing skiers.

He fell into it to a round of applause from others who had stopped to help.

The whole ordeal lasted a minute and a half.

“It was pretty scary. I was just thinking to myself I didn’t want to fall because it was quite high up,” Jack told the NZ Herald newspaper.

After the incident he skied down and re-joined the queue.

“Jack hanging out at Mt Hutt. He all good,” added his father on Facebook.

Attending a film screening of Miller’s was like an underground gathering for the ski world. The finger was always on the pulse. It was fun and inspiring.

NOAA just released their latest weather predictions for the fall & early winter in the USA. Meteorologic fall begins in September 1st and meteorologic winter starts on December 1st.

NOAA is calling for a 55-60% chance of La Nina this fall/winter and this outlook follows a La Nina pattern. La Nina generally drops above average snow in the Pacific Northwest and that’s what NOAA is calling for this fall and early winter.

According to a press release from Valemount Glacier Destinations Ltd., the company received its Master Plan approval yesterday from the B.C. government.

The company plans to open a new resort that will become a major year-round skiing destination and will provide lift access to the summit of Mount Pierre Elliott Trudeau. The new resort will have 6,726 feet of vertical drop—the most vertical of any resort in North America.

Unlike the Jumbo Glacier Resort project, this project did not face a lot of opposition in the community.

“The project embodies the best of B.C. – environmentally sustainable design coupled with some of the best vistas and mountain experiences in the world,” says Tommaso Oberti of Oberti Resort Design and the Pheidias Group in the press release.

Construction is expected to begin in the spring of 2017, with an ultimate opening in December 2017.

The Amtrak Winter Park Express will be fully operational for the 2016-2017 ski season after a seven-year hiatus. According to the press release, the weekend passenger train service from Denver Union Station to the slopes of Winter Park is back, with Amtrak, Winter Park Resort and Union Pacific Railroad having reached agreement to operate the trains from January 7th through March 26th, 2017.

“This is the culmination of a long but rewarding process and we couldn’t be more excited to have passenger rail service return to the doorstep of Winter Park Resort,” said Gary DeFrange, Winter Park Resort President. “We know there’s incredible demand for a viable transportation alternative to I-70 and we’re deeply appreciative to Amtrak, Union Pacific, CDOT, City of Denver, and the Town of Winter Park for helping to make this long-standing dream a reality.”

The round-trips will run on Saturdays and Sundays, with an additional round-trip on Martin Luther King Day and Presidents Day. Winter Park Express trains will give skiers and riders the option to skip heavy I-70 traffic, while enjoying a comfortable and scenic two-
