The Skiffy and Fanty Show episodes

  • Reading Rangers #2: Barrayar by Lois McMaster Bujold
Hello, Rangers! In our second installment of Reading Rangers, Trish, Paul, Stina, and Kate dive into the second book (internal chronology) of the Vorkosigan Saga, Barrayar, by Lois McMaster Bujold. Trish and Paul offer the experienced voices, while Stina and Kate are mostly new.  There is quite a bit to unpack in this book, including why Cordelia is homesick, what the hell is up with the toxic patriarchy of the Vors, and how awesome cave systems are for screwing with stupid soldiers.
Next time, we’ll be discussing The Warrior’s Apprentice. Kate might have actually cried a little when she found out it wasn’t all about Cordelia.
We hope you enjoy the episode!

  • Signal Boost #12: A Conversation about Conventions, Economics, and Inclusion
On today’s Signal Boost, Shaun and Jen discuss conventions, the economics of attendance, and how they can be more inclusive. They’re particularly concerned with how convention culture tends to be somewhat exclusive, how conventions often fail utterly at disability access, and how something called WorldCon should MAYBE travel around the world a bit more.
Then they squeeeeeee about this week’s mini-boosts. Make sure you let us know about things that YOU love that we should share in future boosts!
*Note: Jen conflates SFWA with WSFS. SFWA is NOT in charge of the Hugos, WSFS is!

  • 328. Stina Leicht (a.k.a. Mrs. Irish Cream) — Blackthorne (An Interview)
Serial killers, writing in reverse order, and blind spymasters, oh my! Our very own Stina Leicht joins Jen and Paul to discuss Blackthorne, the second book of her flintlock fantasy series, The Malorum Gates. We get heavy into the world building of a nation based on the free market gone wild, cultural concerns of a post-war refugee kingdom, and the reasons for an intimate focus in an epic fantasy. Listen and then go buy the book!

  • #60. Wonder Woman (2017) w/ Michi Trota — A Shoot the WISB Subcast
Intersectionality issues, forced romances, and origin stories, oh my! Julia, Trish, and Stina discuss the DCEUs only decent movie so far, Wonder Woman, with special guest, Michi Trota! This is an all woman review because we really wanted to get into what this film means to women. The team dives right into all of their problems with the movie, especially how lacking in women a film about Wonder Woman actually is (particularly women of color). But they also share their love for the movie and the character! Make sure you don’t miss a poem from Julia and the Wonder Woman comic run recommendations from Michi!

  • Signal Boost #10: Alien Nation, Supergirl, and Flash!
On today’s Signal Boost, Shaun and Jen COMPLETELY lose track of what they were supposed to be talking about, end up pitching an Alien Nation reboot (after discussing what made it so 90s), and discuss Supergirl and positive relationships between men in Flash. Honestly, we don’t even know what we’re talking about, but for American Independence day, we’re challenging toxic masculinity and racism. Boom.
Plus, we lay down the awesome with our miniboosts!

  • 327. Fiend Without a Face (1958) — A Torture Cinema "Adventure"
Facehugger brains, Canadian tourism, and the mountains of Manitoba, oh my! This month, Trish, Shaun, and David (our resident Canadian horror film professor!) talk about the 1958… ummm… classic? Fiend Without a Face! It’s bad, folks, I mean, it’s really bad… So bad that Shaun ends up defending the Transformers films in response. However, David lays down some horror film factoids and Trish appreciates the stupidity, so make of that what you will.

  • #59. Alien: Covenant (2017) w/ Jeannette Ng — A Shoot the WISB Subcast
Byron, Shelley, and Wagner, oh my! Shaun, David, and Jen, discuss Ridley Scott’s newest edition to the Alien universe, Alien: Covenant, with special guest, Jeannette Ng! The group travel deep into the weeds of the literary and theological references in the film (dragging Shaun along kicking and screaming), Ridley Scott’s ambitious vision, and David’s (not to be confused with the David on the podcast) role as the protagonist of Prometheus and Covenant. It’s a bit of a heavy hitter.
