Halloween and spooky season may be over for most other folks but for us ghouls, the vibe it has is a year round thing! Marvalous and I already talked about the iconic franchise Halloween, so this time we wanted to talk about the holiday itself. 

The history of Halloween is conveyed in different ways throughout pop-culture, some more contradicting than others; so, we take the time to really talk about the origins of the mysterious holiday itself. From when the traditions first started, to how they changed throughout time, to what we know today! We cover as much as we can about the day that started most of our fascination towards horror and the supernatural in general.

The final episode covering the Halloween franchise is here, and this time we are covering the Greene time line or movies! Anyone who watched the reboot of Halloween in 2018 was excited to see what story Greene and Carpenter had in mind about Michael Myers and how they would tell it. The two directors put their heads together to bring us the final (at least for now) telling of Myers’ story and it was a feat on its own. 

The hype behind 2018 was no joke, the ones that followed had its controversy but were good nonetheless. Marvalous and I cover the plot, the Easter eggs we found throughout these newer films, our thoughts on the newer time line and our overall thoughts of the franchise as a whole in today’s episode. Not as much controversy came up regarding the production of the film for once, but the audience members seem to have a thing or two to say about how the story was told. We want to know if you enjoyed the newer story, or do you think Michael could’ve been handled better in today’s day and age of movies?

About 20 years have passed since the release of the original Halloween (1978) and the masses got two versions of Michael Myers coming back to the big screens. One was Halloween H20, the continuation of The Shape’s story, and the other was Rob Zombie’s interpretation of the infamous Myers story—causing Halloween and Halloween II to come to fruition. Each had their own way of expanding on the universe many had come to love and needless to say, both projects were under a lot of scrutiny. 

Marvalous and I cover both takes, expanding on our likes, dislikes and try to explain the overall story that both takes were trying to tell. Despite the striking differences of the films, there is one thing that we all know for certain and it’s that any Halloween film—be it a continuation or spin off—always seems to have drama tailing not too far behind the crew.

We take on a time line that was inspired by the original Halloween trilogy, but takes on a twist of its own. It is more commonly known among the horror community as the Thorn trilogy or time line of Halloween. The Halloween franchise in general is not the easiest to jump into due to the amount of interpretations and time lines that exist. Many can’t just put on Halloween (1978), watch all the way to Halloween 6 and make sense of it all, so Marvalous and I take on the challenge of explaining it as best as we can. These three films, Halloween 4, Halloween 5 and Halloween 6 take their own route in explaining and expanding what Michael Myers really is. A character embodying pure evil with no better explanation is no more, but instead a more supernatural approach is brought to light in attempt to explain what Michael really is, in the Thorn trilogy. We see our beloved characters like Loomis and we hear about Laurie, but we get introduced to new characters that are trying to make sense of their predecessors mistakes: never putting Michael down for good. We see that time is forgiving to Michael, but not so much to those he torments as they’ve either become paranoid or are in complete denial. He seems to be less of a force as this story continues and more of a villain.

As promised, Marva and I take on the franchise that has had generations in a choke-hold and made this horror icon a household name: Halloween! We talk about John Carpenter’s adaptation of this story first. He is the man who brought us Michael to begin with, and made the idea of the Boogey Man/The Shape a fearsome one; It is definitely something that could easily haunt your nightmares. In today’s episode, we take on the trilogy that Carpenter had his hand in—some more proactively than others—and give you our thoughts on the films. 

The classic Halloween (1978), Halloween II and Halloween III: Season of the Witch are the films we take a moment to discuss a little deeper and try to understand the story Carpenter was trying to portray—stepping away from the more modern interpretation done by Greene.

Carpenter may have not wanted to create Halloween II so quickly after the first film or even continue with the third one, but regardless we now have a trilogy that is considered iconic and fuels discussions across multiple communities. We’ll continue to talk about the other time lines and films that were made and how it was inspired by this iconic trilogy in the following weeks episodes, but first, walk with us (and Michael) down the path that Carpenter originally made.

Marva and I dive into a film we saw in our recommendation list, Under Paris. For lack of better words, the movie was jaw dropping. What starts off as a heart-warming, ocean conservation movement kind of film and quickly turns into a horror and thriller movie that expands on the idea of nature vs nurture and Mother Nature lashing out at the group responsible for her pain.

The underlying tone of the film is the sense of urgency a lot of people have to save our oceans and in turn our planet, but not everyone is on the same page. The way Mother Nature lashes out though is not something Marva and I have seen before, and in all honesty, blew us away.

Marva and I breakdown a guilty pleasure of ours, Hell Fest! Ever since its release, one of us will always play it when Halloween season comes around. The kills and the setting the film never fails to increase our hype for our favorite time of year. 

We watch as a group of friends take on a Halloween event, one that doesn’t have the best of reputation, but not for the mazes; it causes attendees to join the dead, if you will. The Other will have you waiting for their next kill, and we both never fail to pay our respects to him as one of our favorite masked murderers.

The sequel to the cult classic, Beetlejuice, just came out in theaters and it’s so good (some say) that you need to say its name twice: Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. 

MJ and I review this sequel film after much anticipation and try to see if it’ll break the curse of most sequels—that the original is always better, no matter what the sequel puts out. This is one of the few films that brings the both of us on opposite ends of the argument and we both explain why that’s the case on today’s episode!
