May 15, 2023Talking walking and writing in Somerset with Rachel MeadMy guest Rachel Mead has already walked 4 miles and travelled by bus to get to meet me at 10am in Taunton, Somerset! That's dedication! Rachel is a walker and a writer...she writes about her walks for magazines and websites and is currently preparing her first book. Her first love is exploring Somerset, usually by foot of course, but she is also known to jump on her bike or pull on her running shoes to get out and about in the amazingly varied landscape her home county offers. As we chat Rachel shares advice and recommendations for walkers of all abilities and experience; this lady knows her stuff! We also share our cakes: mine is indulgence, Rachel's is, unsurprisingly, more walker-friendly!Find out more about Rachel's walking and adventures in SomersetFacebookInstagramIf you enjoyed the show and you're feeling generous, you can buy me a coffee! April 10, 2023Print or digital? Is one better than the other? With Paul Smith of Word Gets AroundPaul Smith champions the written word in print form in this epsiode of The Slice: Somerset. But he is a fan of digital too and believes that both are required for business success, and he makes sure his clients understand that! But his magazine is a hub for community news as well and this is primarily what motivates him - a desire to build community networks, a mission to make things happen and a life-long love of the county he calls home.Find out more about Word Gets Around here:www.wordgetsaround.co.ukFacebook @thewordgetsaroundInstagram @wordgetsaroundFind out more about my cake provider here:@rumwellfarmshop.comFacebook @RumwellfarmshopInstagram @rumwellfarmshopIf you enjoyed the show and you're feeling generous, you can buy me a coffee! March 27, 2023Talking to Christell Charles, PROMISEworksAs we all know, our young people are the future. Somerset charity, PROMISEworks trains adults to be mentors to children and teenagers who need that bit of extra support to thrive and build their confidence in the world. My guest Christell Charles is the coordinator for West Somerset and Taunton and, as a mentor herself, sees first hand how valuable having an 'adult friend' can be when a young person has not had the best start in life or has emerged from the COVID-19 lockdowns scared, worried and anxious about going out or meeting new people. Join Christell and I as we talk about what being an adult mentor to a young person involves, the changes mentors can make to young lives and, of course, we eat cake! March 20, 2023Talking to Adam Burgan, Theatre Manager The Octagon, YeovilThe Octagon Theatre in Yeovil, Somerset is about to undergo a massive £28 million transformation and just weeks before they close the doors for up to two years, I was lucky enough to have Theatre Manager, Adam Burgan as my guest on the show. His passion for theatre is clear; as a teenager he found his tribe in his local drama group and fell in love with the performing arts, going on to study theatre management at university and working his way up the ranks to his role today at the Octagon. The excitement surrounding the redevelopment of this regional theater is obvious too as Adam reflects on the journey to date and explains how he believes the new theatre and arts centre will contribute to the cultural life of Yeovil and the rest of the county.
