When that principle is ignored, abuse follows, and the church has not been innocent of that abuse. The prophetic in particular has been weaponized in ways that have broken homes and marriages. The teaching also addresses what prophecy is not: it is not word of knowledge, it is not word of wisdom, and no single gift functions as a gateway to the others. Christ is the door. Any gift elevated to that position has been exalted beyond its assignment. Sons are not ranked by how much Spirit they have received, because a fraction of infinity is still infinity, and God settled his infinity into finite men to make them super-abundant in every place they stand.

Prophecy is preaching the word of God regarding eternal salvation. The blood of the lamb is the essence of prophecy8. Prophecy must be rooted in the love of God. The love of God is embodied in Christ and in the giving of Christ9. The goal of prophesying, foretelling the future, or speaking a new message from God to the people is to convict of sin, bring to account, and reveal the secrets of the heart, which then bring the hearer to total submission and worship of God10. Prophecy is the result of the Holy Spirit at work in the believer. The Holy Spirit is not a force you channel or a feeling you chase. He is a person, and the river of living water that flows from sons is the overflow of that person dwelling within.

This teaching moves through Psalm 22 and Psalm 23 as a continuous theological unit, showing that the foretelling of Christ's suffering in Psalm 22 is the necessary foundation for the shepherd imagery that follows. The still waters of Psalm 23 are not a metaphor for calm circumstances. They are the Holy Spirit himself, the comforter to whom the shepherd leads you. From there, the teaching lands in John 7:37-39, where Jesus identifies himself as the source of rivers of living water and the scripture identifies that river as the Holy Spirit given to those who believe. Belief is handled precisely here, defined not as mental agreement but as adhesion, confident reliance, and complete submission to the will and movement of Christ. Whatever overflows from God is God, and the son who is led by the Spirit carries that overflow into everything around him.
