My grandpa was unjustly imprisoned when he was only 6 years old.
His imprisonment lasted 20 years.
Later in life, when the PDPA (Communist party) in Afghanistan had seized control, many people were being unjustly imprisoned.
My grandpa found himself in a position where he was able to leverage the power of high ranking PDPA officials to free innocent people from unfortunate and unjust fates.
On today’s episode, he shares one story about saving a family…and one of the members of that family being the sister-in-law of the same King who imprisoned him.
The SHACKLED interview series will appear here on the blog as well as my podcast and on YouTube.
Adam: You experienced what happens when a leader or ruler of government becomes corrupt. What do you think is important for leaders and governments to know to take care of their people?
Khaled: Yeah…it was a time of a lot of change. They took a lot of people to prison. And one day Zaid (my brother) came to me and said, “My sister-in-law, her husband, his mother, and his son went to the jail last night. Do you know somebody from this government?”
I said, “Yeah, I know Babrak Karmal.” He was the Secretary-General of Taraki. And he lived, not in our neighborhood…in our section. “I know him. Let’s go to him. I want to tell him about it if he’s not out from his house,” I said. My brother Zaid and I went in the car and left for Babrak Karmal’s house.
There was a lot of people waiting outside his house waiting for him to come outside. I sent Babrak one business card through one soldier who was by the door to his house. The soldier told me, “He is coming now.” And I said, “Ok. Give him this.”
I saw Karmal come out the front door and my business card was in his hand. He said, “Khaled jan, can you give me the time?” He thought I was asking about something regarding my family’s properties in Afghanistan. “Yeah. I’m thinking about it,” he said.
I said, “No. This is something else. This is very important!”
Then he gestured for me to wait so he could say his hellos to everyone waiting for him. And then he came and told us, “You and Zaid jan go in my car.” He had a Russian jeep. I went in the car and waited until he joined us. He started talking to us about the jail he was in before with the commander.
“What’s happened?” he asked.
I said, “Yeah, the sister-in-law of my brother Zaid is the granddaughter of King Habibullah. She’s in the jail. She’s very young.”
“Okay. I will introduce you to the leader, Taraki. I have another thing to attend to, there is a minister waiting for a meeting with me…I have to go there,” he said.
He told one officer there, Taroon, “Take these two gentlemen to Taraki.”
Then we went to Taraki. I asked Taraki, “Mr. Taraki, do you want to have credit in this land or not with this revolution or coup d’etat?”
He said, “Yeah. I want to have credit.”
“That is not credit, that every night the car of the military minister comes and takes the people into the jail. It’s not good.”
“Yeah, sometimes…well, what has happened? What happened?” he asked.
I told him the story. Then he told Taroon, “Whatever these two gentlemen tell you, do it all.”
Then he give them the order.
Then we come out and he took the telephone and call the jail, Pul-i-Charkhi, and he said, “Please let Mahboob free.”
After a half hour, the Pul-i-Charkhi prison warden called and Taroon answered. He turned to us and said, “Mahboob is refusing to leave unless her husband is freed too.”
Taroon called Taraki’s office and relayed the situation.
He received approval to free Mahboob’s husband too. Her husband had a little boy from a previous wife. Then, the prison called again and said her husband is refusing to leave unless his son is freed too.
I told Taroon, “Please, he’s just a child.”
He said, “Ok, let the child free.
Then the husband of Mahboob said, “My mother is here.”
His mother was the sister-in-law of Zahir Shah.
Adam: The same King that put you in prison.
Khaled: Yea, the same King. Taroon asked me, “What shall we do with his mother? The mother is the Queen’s sister!”
I said, “She’s an old woman. Taroon, please call and let her free.”
He called and let her free. Then, Zaid and Taroon went to bring them to Zaid’s home. It was altogether 4 people, one of them being a child.
Adam: So how did it make you feel to free a relative of the same person that put you in prison?
Khaled: Because for me it was not very important that one wife, one woman, one old woman should be an enemy to me.
Adam: So you couldn’t even imagine her as an enemy?
Khaled: No.
Adam: No grudge?
Khaled: No. Only I wrote in my book everything that he did, but no revenge…it is not about the revenge.
Adam: Did he ever thank you for freeing his relative? Did Zahir Shah ever say thank you?
Khaled: No (chuckling).
Adam: But she’s his sister-in-law.
Khaled: No. Never did he say anything to me about that.
Adam: How did it make you feel to free the boy?
Khaled: The boy yeah, he told me, “I owe you Khaled jan.” Then, I asked Taroon to get him a passport to go out from Afghanistan. Then a passport was ordered for him to be able to leave the country. At the airport, his son told me, “Khaled jan, I owe you very much.”
I told him, “Don’t think about it.”
He knew that we were the enemy of the King Zahir Shah. That our family was destroyed by this King and his family. He knew everything. But I told him, “Don’t think about it. Don’t think about it. You don’t owe.”
Adam: Do you have any last messages you’d like to share with the people?
Khaled: Don’t think about the revenge. Excuse the people, and bring them to the right direction. It’s better to bring them in the direction than revenge. We have in our Qur’an, “Excuse is much better than the revenge. Excuse is much better than the revenge.”
Adam: Forgive.
Khaled: Forgive, yea.

My book – SHACKLED: A Journey From Political Imprisonment To Freedom – is available on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and other book retailers worldwide.
I wrote SHACKLED alongside my grandpa, as it chronicles his life from being imprisoned for decades when he was six-years-old.
The book has been receiving some incredible praise from readers already.
Here are a few reviews from readers:
A beautiful, spellbinding historical account of Khaled Siddiq’s life with photographs throughout the book. Adam Siddiq, the author, captured the essence, magnificence, and radiance of his grandfather, Khaled Siddiq, in this remarkable and awe-inspiring true story. It takes place in Khaled’s homeland, Afghanistan. A government takeover results in terror used as an instrument to control people, and led to the imprisonment of thousands of political prisoners for many years including the very young Khaled and his many close family members. Khaled’s life, along with his family, was about survival, sorrow, bereavement, injustice, grief, and a love that transcended broken dreams. Adam’s grandfather is the embodiment of resilience powered by patience, hope, and the gift of love bestowed upon him by family and generations of ancestors. He learned patience at a young age, and held on to hope and love while he and his family endured unimaginable hardship, deprivation, and imprisonment. He witnessed indescribable cruelty and inhumanity. This story, for me, was about surviving unending darkness through the light of love. Adam Siddiq, how fortunate you are to be a recipient of your grandfather’s legacy of love.

If you’ve enjoyed books like Man’s Search For Meaning by Viktor Frankl, or Long Walk To Freedom by Nelson Mandela, or any book or movie or story that has a profound depth to it with overcoming a horrendous situation….you will enjoy reading SHACKLED. Written by Adam, the grandson of Khaled, there’s an extra dimension that makes this book so special.
– Daniel P.
This is an amazing, inspiring, heart-wrenching and heart-opening story of a man who walked in courage and love even amidst the harshest treatment and circumstances from a tender young age. Masterfully and lovingly written by the equally inspiring Adam Siddiq, this book addresses the ultimate question we all face in life: How do we find inner peace and spiritual freedom when faced with hate and difficulty as we walk as human beings in this world? The bond and collaboration between elder and grandson shine through the pages of this book. If only we could all find the courage and honor to share the stories of our elders in such a devoted way.
– Donnaah S.
Gripping story, beautiful imagery and a necessary literary contribution to the global library… Also a unique perspective on this historical account for those seeking to delve deeper into Afghanistan’s truth from the 1932 coup to the 1979 Soviet invasion. The story reinforces the idea that our time is precious and nothing may be taken for granted, while encouraging generational bonding… Many complements to the author as this is a “must read.”

On today’s episode, my grandpa explains what he believes is important for any leader or ruler of a government to know and implement in order to take the best care of their country.
Having experienced a horrible fate from a corrupt leadership and kingdom in Afghanistan after Nadir Shah betrayed King Amanullah and the people, he shared some wise thoughts that are applicable for not just leaders of government, but all people in the world.
The SHACKLED interview series will appear here on the blog as well as my podcast and on YouTube.
Adam: You experienced what happens when a leader or ruler of government becomes corrupt. What do you think is important for leaders and governments to know to take care of their people?
Khaled: Every government, every leader, must first be honest with themselves. If somebody is honest with themselves, they can be honest with other people. The people who aren’t honest with other people actually aren’t honest with themselves. To be honest and be true and faithful to the country and the people. Honesty with the people, but to have that, first be honest with yourself.

On today’s episode, my grandpa explains why he named me “Adam”.
Adam is an uncommon name in Farsi speaking cultures.
The word translates to “human”.
Given my grandpa’s horrendous adversities in life, he chose to give me a name for a greater purpose.
Find out why below.
The SHACKLED interview series will appear here on the blog as well as my podcast and on YouTube.
Adam: You named me…
Khaled: Adam! Because we have…we know we read it…the first human come into the world is Adam. Adam…when we tell to the child or somebody “Be Adam” we mean “be nice…be kind…be human”. I put the name Adam on you because Adam is the first messenger in the world. And then some of my friends asked me, “Why do you put his name as Adam?” I said, “Because we have no Adam here! There are no humans!”
Adam: (Speaking to camera) My grandpa jokes that there aren’t enough humans in the world so he named me Adam because my name means “human” in Farsi and is very rare for someone to have that name from Farsi speaking cultures.

On today’s episode, my grandpa gives advice for those going through difficulties in life right now.
It should be noted that my grandpa had been imprisoned when he was 6 years old for decades, had his uncles, brother, and cousins die of execution and illness, was denied a visa to see his father for 8 years (whom he had been separated from for over 30 years due to exile), and much more.
This advice has more density than life advice you’ll find from another self-help book or coach.
This is real advice…from someone who’s endured immense, unimaginable challenges and lived to see the other side…time and time again.
The SHACKLED interview series will appear here on the blog as well as my podcast and on YouTube.
Adam: What advice would you give to people who are going through a difficult time right now?
Khaled: My advice is to be happy always…don’t think negative…the time is going, it’s not staying…everything changes. Think always positive. Be strong. Don’t be naive. It’s not good to be naive, because you everything as a creature. You have wisdom. You have everything inside you. And your body is ok, why think about negative things? There’s no existence for negativity. That’s my advice for all my friends, the people, and my dear children.
Adam: Yes. Don’t make any room for negativity.
Khaled: No. Negativity has no existence in my room. When the German people heard my story, they’d say, “This is amazing you are always happy and laughing!” I said, “Why not? I’m not there anymore. I’m here!”
Adam: So don’t carry the past pain with you.
Khaled: No. Never.

Today’s episode is an emotional one.
I ask my grandpa about his experience when he reunited with his father after over 30 years of separation due to exile.
The SHACKLED interview series will appear here on the blog as well as my podcast and on YouTube.
Adam: What was the day you were freed from prison like?
Khaled: I remember that it was one winter night that I came to Berlin. Actually, I should at the same time have come to Germany, but there was a lot of snow in Moscow and no flights heading to Berlin. So I stayed one night in Moscow and the next night I came to Berlin. From Berlin, I took one taxi from East Berlin to West Berlin. From the border, I took another taxi to my father. My father and my brothers and my cousins were out looking from me from the railway, from the busway, from the taxiway, but I was at the home before they all were there. Nobody was at the home except for my stepmother.
When I saw my father…I couldn’t stop my crying. And my father also. But I stopped because I knew that my father had high blood pressure, and I changed the mood then.
Adam: You changed the mood because he had high blood pressure and you didn’t want something to happen to him.
Khaled: Yes.
Adam: What did you guys talk about?
Khaled: He asked me about the days in jail…like you.
Adam: Yeah?
Khaled: I wouldn’t talk about it too much because I knew that he wasn’t in good health. I began to tell him my story with the taximan from East Berlin to West Berlin, that I gave him 30 US dollars. He was so happy. One dollar at that time was worth 5 D-Marks. One D-Mark was worth 5x the currency for East Berlin. It was a lot of money for a short taxi ride! He was so happy that he ran from me….took the money…and we were all laughing about this story.
Adam: And you spent how much time with him?
Khaled: With my father? 6 months. After breakfast, every day we would go to one park…Thiellepark. We were walking and my father told me about his history and the past, who he was and what he was doing. He told me about the situation at the time with King Amanullah, and what was the purpose of King Amanullah, and later the purpose of Nadir Shah. That was something.
Adam: He had a lot of letters, right?
Khaled: Yeah, he had a lot of letters, but I’m sorry, it was all old or destroyed.
Adam: But there are still some you can read.
Khaled: Yea still some of them I took and put in the book. You can see the picture. Nadir Shah always write to my father about the fighting against Bache-e-Saqaa and asking for money. My father sent him money and my uncle sent him money also, Ghulam Nabi Khan, because they were all working together at the time. But, after he took the kingdom away, he was out from them…
It was 6 months that I was with my father, and during the 6 months, I was for some first days or weeks or one month or two months always with him. After that, I couldn’t swim, so I went to swimming school. I couldn’t dance, so I went to the dancing school. Twice a week I learned French and English at the Berlitz Institute. During the day I was busy.
Adam: But every day you were walking with your father?
Khaled: Everyday I was walking, yeah.
Adam: And he’s telling you his story.
Khaled: Yeah. The stories from him, and his father, my grandfather, Sepah-Salar Ghulam Haidar Khan Charkhi…he talked about his stories and the story of Nuristan.

The SHACKLED interview series will appear here on the blog as well as my podcast and on YouTube.
Adam: What was the day you were freed from prison like?
Khaled: That was in…1945..1946…it was in the winter time. Actually, I had pneumonia at the time. I was in the hospital and my cousin came from Qala-e-Jadid (prison ward), my brother was in the hospital with me watching over me, and my cousin told us, and Azim jan, my cousin, came and he said, “One soldier from Wilayet (prison) is here and told me that we are free. I have this soldier with me now.” My brother came out and asked him and he said, “I saw your firman (letter)…your papers…that somebody bring it to the direction of this jail.” But I didn’t believe it. My brother went to the director of the jail, Mr. Abdul-Khaliq, and asked him if it was true. He took the telephone and called Wilayet, and then said, “…yeah, it’s true. You are free – all of your family. And this letter, you’ll receive it very soon.” Then, my brother came to my room and I was so excited! I couldn’t stay anymore in the hospital. And I said, “Yes. I come out.” And I came and I asked my brother, “Can you bring me to the director of the jail?” He said, “What are you doing there?” I said, “Yeah, yeah. I have something.” And then I went with my brother to the director of the jail and I told him, “Please, let me go faster with one soldier.” It was usual if one prisoner was allowed to go out, they had to be with a soldier. He said, “Why can’t you wait 1 or 2 or 3 hours until your letter comes? Then you will be free.” I said, “No. I want to go.” Then, he gave me one soldier and I went out from the jail and to the other jail where my mother, sisters, cousins, and aunties were. I was so excited! We were so excited to see each other!

Today’s episode is short, but it’s very, very powerful.
I asked my grandpa what he learned from all his adversities, which include being imprisoned at 6 years old for decades, living through his uncles and cousins being executed and his brother and more relatives dying of diseases, and many more hardships.
His response is a powerful example of how no matter what circumstances we face in life, we always have the choice to give any meaning to it and our experience of life.
Choose responsibly.
The SHACKLED interview series will appear here on the blog as well as my podcast and on YouTube.
Adam: What did going through all these life challenges teach you about life?
Khaled: A lot of adventure.
Adam: A lot of what?
Khaled: Adventure!
Adam: Adventure?
Khaled: Yes (laughing).

Khaled Siddiq was imprisoned for decades at the age of 6.
He lived through hard times with his family members being executed and dying of disease, many of them at a premature age.
After his release from prison, he wasn’t allowed to see his father who was in exile, whom he had only remembered being with once in his life prior to his imprisonment, and even that was a vague memory…like a fading dream.
Throughout his decades of hardship and adversity, he carried an attitude of optimism.
He found optimism by learning and transformed his prison into a school.

Khaled: But I thought always positive…I don’t thinking about the past. I was only tried to learn something…to learn something. That was the positive in my life. Never I was negative. I hope that I come free, once, and work for my family. And what was my goal? First from the jail…First, that I come out and go to the Nejat school, this is a German school, a high school. And to pass the test of the 11th class, and then the 12th. And then they send people to Germany or somewhere. If no, I want to go to the medicine facility to become a doctor. A medicine doctor. That was my goal. But I couldn’t work. I couldn’t come out of jail. And then I came out from Qala-e-Futuh (prison), I was working as a German translator. I was working in the Textile Company. That was different work. But always in my life, I tell you Adam jan, I was never negative. Only positive thinking…better, better.
Adam: Did somebody teach you to always focus on the positive?
Khaled: No, the God teach me. That myself.

Khaled: I was reading books while I was in prison during the times I didn’t have classes with my teachers. I was reading books from writers of the East: such as Rumi, Sa’di, Hafiz, Abdullah Ansari, Khani, Kakhani, Betab, Shaikh…oh it was a lot. And from the West, I was reading the books of Goethe from Germany, Schiller from Germany, Tolstoy from Russia, Lamartine from France, Rousseau from France, Shakespeare from England, etc. From Iran…there was so many. These were the books I was always reading.
Adam: Everyday?
Khaled: Everyday, yeah.

The SHACKLED interview series will appear here on the blog as well as my podcast and on YouTube.
Each day of the series will feature a question I ask my grandpa.
Here’s today’s episode.
Adam: How did you make it through all the years in jail?
Khaled: In Sarai Badam (prison), there was one woman, the wife of Ghulam Nabi Khan, who started a school for all us kids. “Come. It’s better to learn and make use of our time in prison as opposed to crying and feeling miserable. Come and I’ll teach you.”
Adam: Ku Ku jan.
Khaled: Yes, Ku Ku jan (Bi Bi Mariam). Also, her daughter Azra, and my oldest brother, Abdul Samad, and my cousin, Abdul Hamid, were all teachers as well for us. Ku Ku jan was our principal and also a teacher. Later on, when I was in the ward of Qala-e-Jadid in Dehmazang (prison), every day I had two lessons of German and two lessons of Arabic. And if I was free from class, I was reading books…these books I told you about.
Adam: So first it started when you were a kid when your aunt made a school for you.
Khaled: At first we learned the alphabet! We were writing with pebbles on the dirt ground first. Then, later I was writing on the wall with charcoal. After that, one water carrier who brought us the water was smuggling us paper and pens to write with. My mother and aunts were paying him to do this. It was very, very secretive.
Adam: How did he sneak the papers and pens to you guys?
Khaled: He brought us the water and then he’d go inside a small room where he’d fill up our jugs with his waterskin. One guard was watching at all times from outside the room because the room was so small, only one person could fit inside. When he went to fill our jugs with water, he’d take out the papers and pens and hide it behind the jugs.
Adam: So you were studying every day?
Khaled: Yea, everyday studying. That was the best occupation for us.
