  • Vernons Future, Past and Present

This week JB is joined by Simon, Andy, Hoops, Jon and Tom from the band Vernons Future. For only the second time on the podcast we have the full band which makes for some fun times.

There is discussion about how the band initially formed back in the 1980s when they were known as The Vernons and how they recorded an album back then too.

Later on the podcast, we hear about how the band got back together in 2015 and then went on to release the album ‘Aquaplaning’ in 2022.

We hear some interesting stories from their time at college in Liverpool which is where the band formed where some of the current lineup met up. From supporting The Las and The Farm to seeing Blur play at University before they became well known.

The band have a couple of gigs coming up on the 10th October at The Spice of Life and in November at the iconic Dublin Castle in London.

They all give us an insight into inspirations, shared sounds, favourite songs, albums and more.

We round up with some quickfire questions.

Thanks to our sponsor, Arty Burgers (www.artyburgers.com) who are kindly offering 20% off their fantastic range of music prints, mugs and more using code THESOUNDOFTHEBAR to UK listeners.

Make sure to check out the album and keep up to date on his socials @ryankershawofficial

Ryan gives us an insight in to the recording process, how the album has been received and the help and support he has received since it launched. We talk too about the album launch party which took place in his home town of Larkhall.

There is some really interesting chat about how he got involved in music with his first album coming out after spending some time in prison. He talks about how his lived experience has gone on to help others through the wonderful ‘Changing Tunes’ project which helps people with convictions get involved in the music industry.

He shares his own tips to other recording artists in terms of getting their music out there and how music can reach a wider audience.

One area of particular support that is mentioned is Reaction Radio PR who you can find on their website who help emerging bands and singers get their music played on radio.

  • An Intro to Sonar Presents

JB is joined by Jade and Russ from Sonar Presents (@sonar_presents) who are strong supporters of grassroots music in a number of different ways.

We talk to them fresh off being at the Reading and Leeds festival at the weekend. This leads to discussion around the lack of support for emerging acts at the festival and beyond.

The pair give us an insight into their upcoming app Sonar Presents which will launch in November 2026. Their aim is to allow emerging artists to be discovered, allow bands/singers to make more money and more. Keep an eye out for its release.

There are some recommendations given on some emerging acts that you should all check out too which include The Kabins and Isaac Neilson.

Jade advises how she initially got involved with supporting emerging acts through giving female fronted bands more of a platform. This leads on to discussion on how women are treated differently in the music industry whether it be through representation at festivals or interacting with people.

If you can then head along to their music convention which will take place on the 14th November at Bread and Roses in Clapham which will include speakers, musicians and more.
