Today’s message is a new series but the same message: learning to be people of unity. As Ken moves to the book of Ephesians, he talks about the one thing the writer insists upon can make that dream possible.

If we want to be people of unity, it takes the embodiment of Christ. We are people wholly reliant on the love of God to be able to do this work.

Today’s message comes from Acts 17, where Paul visits Athens and sees the Altar to an Unknown God. This text was always preached to Ken as a “gotcha” moment, but Ken fundamentally disagrees with that interpretation.

Paul WAS the ultimate “gotcha” guy. But that’s not what he does when he sees this altar. Instead, he sees it an opportunity to make the people understand that the ultimate understanding of the Creator was found in the embodiment and the life of Christ.

This was an opportunity to recognize divinity.

We want simple stories - here’s the hero, here’s the bad guy. We simplify.

Scripture does the same thing. It wants to prove something, it wants to show something.

This message at the heart of today's invites people to the table. But that invitation can disrupt. It can be at odds with the world.

We are called as a church to see others as our brothers and sisters. That’s not easy.

God does the work. But it only comes about when we first seek after God.

A lot of people feel like the church shouldn’t be involved in politics. Ken disagrees - though he warns us off some of the ways the church has been involved in power before.

Ken dives into the lessons from a far-flung church in the 11th chapter of Acts.

“So many times, we focus on WHAT a thing is. But every so often, we discover that there’s always a ‘why’ behind it.”

If we don’t start with ‘why,’ we’re living with whatever the world throws at us.

Ken’s message today is on the time, as Ken puts it, “God showed Peter a bunch of animals in a blanket.”

This was a period of time where Jewish people simply didn’t spend any time with Gentiles. But in the story of Peter and Cornelius, he doesn’t just send one of these people to the other - he sends both of these people to each other. And the events from this story change the whole course of the Church.

We want to figure life out. We want to do the right thing, but we get in our own way. Humanity always gets in its own way. The ends justifies the means always fail us. Pain always creeps in, justified by a noble purpose.

But God’s will is taking hold. It is continually unfolding.
