When the disciples are dragged before the Sanhedrin, it was a battle between two groups absolutely convinced that they were right. But what the members of the Sanhedrin’s ego wouldn’t let them see was that the disciples were offering was something unbelievably important to our faith: an experience with the living God.

Ken looks at the early part of Acts, where Peter and John were imprisoned and put them in front of the Council for healing a crippled man. And we find ourselves at a battle of competing purposes at the very beginnings of the church.

Ken knows that everywhere we look, things are a mess. But more exhausting than that are the people who stand nearby and pretend they have all the answers.

But Peter doesn’t do that. He doesn’t set himself apart. He focuses instead on the prophesy from Joel that proclaimed this day: this is God’s promise to pour out his Spirit on ALL PEOPLE.

The message of Pentecost is that we have all been shared a portion of the Spirit of God.

Ken doesn’t like dramas on TV - he thinks he could do it. Because it’s just imagining the worst possible thing that could happen in a situation - which is just what happens to the Israelites in the Book of Judges.

The Book of Judges describes the chipping away of a whole people, as they get further from God’s will. And we know that’s what it says in the Book of Judges, because that’s what it says in the introduction.

"There is something about newness that challenges us.” A lot of the Israelites didn’t trust the newness of the Promised Land when they arrived. And that lack of trust ended up having tremendous consequences.

We join the Israelites at the end of the wilderness, ready to step across into the Promised Land. As they stand there, God asks them to be faithful. So we need to ask ourselves today: what does it mean to be faithful?
