MONTGOMERY — Alabama shoppers saw two major sales- tax changes at the register starting Monday. The state’s sales tax on groceries dropped from 3 percent to 2 percent, and a new three-year exemption removed the 4 percent state sales tax from a list of baby, maternity and menstrual products. Under the grocery change, the 2 percent rate applies to food as defined by the federal SNAP program, excluding alcohol, tobacco and hot prepared foods. GROVE HILL — Hikeem Edmond was found guilty of two counts of capital murder by a Clarke County jury for the 2021 killing of Thearthur Dixon. After a seven-day trial, the jury deliberated for approximately two hours before returning the verdict to presiding Clarke County Circuit Judge C. Robert Montgomery. During the trial, District Attorney Stephen K. Former Leroy and Jackson coach Danny Powell — who won state titles in football and baseball for a total of 10 — and UMS-Wright football coach Terry Curtis — who won eight state championships at the school — have been named recipients of the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Alabama Football Coaches Association.
