  • Washington County gets $400K to fix wood bridges

    Washington County has received a 0,000 grant to repair aging wooden bridges, county engineer Danny Overton announced at the Aug. 25 county commission meeting. The grant from the Alabama Forestry Commission will also allow several of the county’s small bridges to be replaced with drainage culverts. “We have a contract that will replace a total of seven bridges in the county,” Overton said.   • County OKs McIntosh sewer partnership

    The Washington County Commission unanimously approved a request by the Five Points Sewer System of McIntosh to have its billing handled by the McIntosh Water System. The proposal for the partnership came to the floor of the Aug. 25 commission meeting, with the sewer system represented by Maxwell Rivers and the water system by David Sullivan. Both men acknowledged the billing and collections will include the disconnection of sewer service.   • Season begins for doves on Saturday in county, state

    Dove hunters in Clarke County and across Alabama’s north zone will return to the fields on Saturday, Sept. 6, with the start of the 2025-26 mourning and white-winged dove season. Opening-day shooting is limited to the afternoon, with legal hunting hours from noon to sunset. Beginning Sunday, hunters can shoot from one-half hour before sunrise until sunset, continuing daily through Oct. 19.
