The VFW 2025-26 Patriots Pen and Voice of Democracy essay contests are now accepting submissions. “How are you showing patriotism and support for our country?” is the theme. Deadline for submissions is Oct. 31. Applications have been supplied to school counselors in Grove Hill, Jackson, Leroy, Chatom and McIntosh. Students in grades 6, 7 and 8 are eligible for the Patriots Pen contest and students in grades 9, 10, 11 and 12 are eligible for the Voice of Democracy. Home-schooled students are also eligible. Quarterback K.D. Moore rushed for 100 yards, including Jackson Academy’s lone touchdown on a 60-yard run, in the Eagles’ 34-7 loss to visiting Monroe Academy on Sept. 5. Jackson Academy fell to 0-3 overall and 0-1 in AISA AA Region 2 while the Volunteers improved to 3-0, 1-0. The Eagles have lost six of the last eight games against Monroe Academy. Despite the loss, JA coach Ashley Carlisle said varsity reps will “most definitely” help his players’ future development.

GROVE HILL — Thomasville’s varsity and junior varsity volleyball teams swept Clarke County on Sept. 4. The JV squad set the tone early, winning 25-8, 25-14. Leroy High School was named a 2024-25 National Beta School of Distinction for increasing its club’s membership by at least 10% from last year, the Washington County Board of Education announced. Only 2,946 Beta Clubs nationwide received the recognition. “This national award speaks highly of your commitment to academic excellence and illustrates your dedication to preparing students for their future,” national Beta Club CEO Bobby Hart said in a congratulatory letter to Leroy High.
