  • Grandma was my Google

It was Thursday, and as usual, I was busy working on weekend projects. My biggest project, of course, was my Sunday sermon. Most people don't understand the amount of hard work that goes into preparing a Sunday sermon. And I work hard. I was spending time researching some ideas on Google. I spend a lot of time on Google because it helps with my research. I'm able to find certain subjects very quickly. Until Thursday, I didn't realize how much time I spent on Google. It’s really a blessing in my life. I had some coffee, and I was resting...

  • In the Spirit on the Lord's Day

A college colleague told me about a tense Sunday morning when he was a part-time pastor. The deacon chairman confronted him before worship with a stern request (the Baptist deacon chairman is akin to a Master Sergeant in the U.S. Army). “We’re gonna’ wait until after the service, but we want to meet with you IMMEDIATELY when it’s done,” he scowled. It’s been some years since he told me this, and laughed about it then, but I forgot the punch line. I don’t know if he was terminated or lived to preach another day. Whatever the case, this was surely a...

  • Anti-incumbent mood in 2026? Maybe

Defeating an incumbent is one of the most challenging things to pull off in American politics. In the last 100 years, only four incumbent presidents have lost their reelection bids — Herbert Hoover, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter and George H.W. Bush. In the last three congressional cycles, the incumbent seeking reelection had a success rate of more than 90%. It does happen, but when it does, it can be part of a bigger, broader shift in the country’s political temperament. In 1980, the Reagan Revolution gave incumbent U.S. House members a reelection rate of 91% but the U.S. Senate had a...

  • The first flight

The plane trip began in Tuscaloosa, and stopped in Jackson, before it finally reached Dallas. Later in life, taking this hopscotch flight was as aggravating as a floater in my eye. But not when I was 21 years old. Not when I was headed to my first big job interview — and my very first airplane ride. I was meeting with a large paper company. Apparently, they liked our first meeting at the University of Alabama, so I was invited to fly out and meet some of the muckety mucks. The operative word here is fly. Woo hoo! I certainly...

  • Almond outstanding choice to lead PSC

One of Gov. Kay Ivey’s greatest legacies will be her outstanding wisdom and prudence in her appointments to fill important judicial and governmental openings. She has shown amazing leadership in this capacity over her decade as governor. She had the opportunity to make another stellar appointment in June. Ivey appointed state Rep. Cynthia Lee Almond to be the new president of the Alabama Public Service Commission. The vacancy occurred when veteran PSC Commissioner Twinkle Andress Cavanaugh left to take the Trump administration appointment as Alabama’s director for rural development at the U.S. Department of Agriculture. She will work closely with...

  • CHOOSE Act athletes eligible without a wait

The Montgomery County Circuit Court granted the State of Alabama a temporary restraining order against the Alabama High School Athletic Association on Friday, allowing students who accept CHOOSE Act funds to be eligible to play sports without sitting out a year. The temporary restraining order specifically prohibits the AHSAA from “enforcing any rule or policy which makes the acceptance of CHOOSE Act funds the sole determinative factor of eligibility for participation in interscholastic athletic events.” The AHSAA had issued a ruling requiring all student-athletes who transfer to private schools and accept CHOOSE Act funds to sit out one year before...
