In bygone days in Alabama politics, there were several what I call “go to” events for statewide Alabama politicians and potential candidates. Today, there is one, the Dekalb/Henager Ledbetter/Livingston Fourth of July Breakfast. About 10 years ago, two powerful North Alabama legislators — Speaker of the Alabama House of Representatives Nathaniel Ledbetter and state Sen. Steve Livingston — started a little Fourth of July breakfast for their hometown folks. It has now become the premier “must go to” event in the state. It has grown to be a very large, legendary gathering. It is held in the Dekalb County city...

JACKSON — Jackson coach Anthony Hayes finds a special wonderment in watching replays of Isaiah Gladney’s game-winning shot to win the state basketball championship in February. “ I think I watch that game two or three times a week as if I wasn’t going to know (the outcome),” Hayes said on Wednesday as the Aggies received rings commemorating back-to-back Blue Maps. “And every time I’m excited as if I don’t know what’s about to happen. Thank you for those memories for me. This is year 20 for me. I don’t have much longer to do it — that’s just the...

The recently completed 2025 Regular Session has concluded successfully. Anytime you record solid balanced budgets, you have succeeded. Both the Education Budget and General Fund Budget are sound, thanks to the good work of the budget chairmen. Sen. Arthur Orr (R-Decatur), Rep. Danny Garrett (R-Trussville), Sen. Greg Albritton (R-Escambia) and Rep. Rex Reynolds (R-Huntsville) have done yeoman work. Legislative leaders, like Speaker Nathaniel Ledbetter (R-Rainsville) and Senate President Pro Tem Garlan Gudger (R-Cullman), have provided outstanding leadership. The Education Budget reflects the respect and knowledge of the importance of our Alabama Community College System. This system is the mainstay of...

COFFEEVILLE — The first of two barges that broke free on May 29 and hit the Jim Folsom Bridge in Coffeeville caused a lengthy closure of U.S. Highway 84 before the bridge was inspected. A second barge went past the bridge and got caught up at the Coffeeville Lock and Dam, where it eventually sank. Officials were notified of the accident at the bridge shortly before 11 a.m. An inspector from the Alabama Department of Transportation later deemed the bridge safe to re-open and traffic resumed at about 12:35 p.m. “ We positioned fire units on the east and west...
