We have a returning guest this morning, John Gran, President of the North Redondo Beach Business Association (NRBBA). 

The NRBBA’s stated mission is to promote activities that enhance business in North Redondo Beach (Zip 90278).  They are local businesses discussing local issues. The NRBBA brings together business owners, managers and city government representatives to share information and help North Redondo Beach businesses grow.  John currently serves as a Budget & Finance Commissioner for the City of Redondo Beach, and is the Treasurer of the Redondo Beach Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau.  He is a 17-year Redondo Beach resident, is married to his lovely wife Cynthia, and together they own a local business, Fish Window Cleaning.

This morning, John is going to fill us in on the upcoming Walkabout Redondo which takes place this Saturday, May 21 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Barry Brisk: Conductor Beach Cities Symphony Orchestra

Barry Brisk first conducted in public at the age of fourteen, when he performed selections from South Pacific at his graduation from Webster Junior High School in West Los Angeles.

As a student he also conducted the orchestras at University High School, Mount St. Mary's College, and the University of Music (formerly Academy of Music) in Vienna, Austria where he studied with the prominent conductor/teacher Hans Swarowsky.

Professionally, Brisk has conducted many orchestras in Southern California, as well as in Mexico and Austria.

 

Maestro Brisk has been Music Director of the Beach Cities Symphony since 1994 and is particularly proud of having expanded the orchestra's repertoire. 

He has conducted works by more than eighty composers, more than a dozen of whom are living.

Our guest this morning is Dave Meros, vocalist and bass guitarist from the band Iron Butterfly.

Dave provides the heavy bass lines Iron Butterfly is famous for. He is best known as the bass player for the rock band Spock’s Beard. He has also played with such artists as Eric Burdon, Bobby Kimball of Toto, Simon Phillips, Steve Lukather, Glenn Hughes and Mark Lindsay of Paul Revere & The Raiders!

The Los Angeles music climate of the late sixties and seventies was characterized by the heavy sounds and sentiments that reflected the revolutionary attitudes of the generation. Bursting onto that scene was Iron Butterfly, whose sound not only epitomized the hard attitudes of the youth with its heavy drumming and bass lines, but also embraced more delicate aspirations through its intricate guitar and keyboard overlays.

Their first album, aptly titled “Heavy” stayed on Billboard’s album charts for almost a year. They followed up with the monumental LP, “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida”, which outsold every record in the history of recorded music within the first year of its release and outgrew and outsold the standard of the music industry’s “Gold Album” award, and was awarded the industry’s very first “Platinum Album”.  To date the album has sold in excess of 30 million copies and remains an undisputed classic in the archives of rock with DJ’s and audiophiles worldwide!

Our listeners know that we’ve had dozens of musicians and bands on the show over the past five years but this is our first, real life rock star!

Our guest this morning is Heath Gregory, Co-Founder of the Tour de Pier.

Heath has been a long-time cycling enthusiast who has combined his love of the sport with his passion of finding a cure for cancer.

Starting in 2011 – in a little over two years – his family lost four members to cancer. Coincidentally, his friend Jon Hirshberg who had lost his father to pancreatic cancer approached him about the idea of putting together an outdoor spin event at the Manhattan Beach Pier. Gregory was “all-in”. To date, the fundraising event has raised nearly $2 million for worthy cancer charities.

Gregory is also co-founder of the Uncle Kory Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to the advancement of collaborative brain cancer research. The Uncle Kory Foundation is named after his brother-in-law, Kory Lewis Hunter, who passed away at age 42 to an aggressive form of brain cancer, Glioblastoma. The Uncle Kory Foundation is a beneficiary of the Tour de Pier.

Gregory is a resident of Manhattan Beach and President and CEO of Baron Equities, a privately-held investment company. He received his MBA from USC.

The Tour de Pier is one of the most popular fundraising events in the South Bay. It will take place on Sunday, May 15 at the Manhattan Beach Pier.
