Our guests this morning are Michael Schreiber, owner of South Bay Customs and Neal Von Flue, one of the featured artists at this year’s El Segundo Art Walk (ESAW).

Michael Schreiber was born in Santa Monica, raised in Redondo Beach and moved to El Segundo about 10 years ago.

The space in south Redondo where SBC started wasn’t working anymore and a friend had some warehouse space to sub-lease, so he jumped on the opportunity to move to El Segundo in 2008. SBC also works with the music industry on video and photo shoots, record release parties and live music recording.

Neal Von Flue is an artist, educator and musician from El Segundo. He plays banjo and musical saw in the acoustic duo Sanguine and Shiny. You can learn more about his work at www.nealvonflue.com.

This morning, we’re going to learn about this year’s El Segundo Art Walk and I’m making a prediction right now that it’s going to be the most talked about event of the summer.

Our guests this morning are Jeff Ginsburg, Joan Irvine and Ann Dalkey from the community group, keep the Esplanade Beautiful.

Jeff is the District One Council Member for the City of Redondo Beach. He is a licensed real estate broker and operates his own property management firm located in Riviera Village. Jeff grew up in Rancho Palos Verdes where he attended school and raised his family. 

Ann Dalkey has lived in Redondo Beach for over 30 years. As a marine biologist for the City of Los Angeles’ Environmental Monitoring Division, Ann noticed during monitoring cruises along the coast that the coast line in the South Bay was predominantly concrete in contrast to the much greener looking coast line north of Santa Monica. As a regular visitor to the Esplanade, she also noticed that the beach bluffs were covered with iceplant, a native plant from South America. 

Joan Irvine has become well-known in Redondo Beach due to her work with Keep the Esplanade Beautiful. She was  member of the 2008 Leadership Redondo class, a Chamber member and wedding officiant. Joan has had a varied and successful career in sales, marketing, technology, and association management. 

This morning, we’re going to learn what it takes to Keep the Esplanade Beautiful and hear about some upcoming community events.

Our guest this morning is Ray Vizcarra, Redondo Union High School Director of Bands.

Ray graduated from Fresno State University with an emphasis in Performance and Music Education. He also studied music performance at Northern Michigan University and Ohio State.

Ray held the principal trombonist position in the South Bay Youth Orchestra, Fresno Youth Symphony and California Jr. Philharmonic. He was chosen to perform as a soloist at the Salzburg Institute in Austria, Germany, and Italy.

As an educator, Ray is credited for his work resurrecting the Fairfax High School (LAUSD) music program which had been defunct for twenty years. During his seven year tenure at Fairfax, the band won three championships and received multiple Excellent and Superior ratings.

In January 2014, Ray arrived at Redondo Union High School and continues his musical achievement legacy, with Redondo Union student musicians earning unanimous Superior ratings. His students won 1st place with a Gold rating at the Heritage Festival, placing Redondo among the top 10% of all high school groups nationally. In 2014, the RUHS band and dance guard earned several 1st place wins and five sweepstakes awards. In 2015, the band and guard earned a number of 1st place wins, 7 Sweepstakes, and eventually won the Division 4A State Championship. Ray plans to continue creating positive musical experiences for students at Redondo Union High School.

The State Championship is a huge deal for RUHS and a point of pride for the residents and City of Redondo Beach and this morning, we’re going to hear from the man who led the way.

We have a couple of returning guests this morning - Theresa Plakos and Judith Opdahl from Cancer Support Community – Redondo Beach.

Judith Opdahl joined the staff of Cancer Support Community-Redondo Beach as Executive Director/CEO in May 1994 - four years after attending the community as a patient with a diagnosis of Stage IV cancer. Words cannot express her gratitude for such a healing and educational experience she received there.  Today, 25 years since first coming to Cancer Support Community, she is humbled when she hears the words “Cancer Support Community has saved my life” and considers the free programs “priceless”.

Theresa Plakos has been the Public Relations Director at Cancer Support Community-Redondo Beach for 6 years. Her primary responsibilities consist of working with the local media as well as the medical and non-medical communities throughout the South Bay and surrounding areas to spread the word about their many free programs, services and fundraising events. Theresa came to work for Cancer Support Community after a good friend was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. Her passion for the work was further fueled by the loss of her father and stepfather to lung cancer a few years ago.

This morning we’ll discuss what role Cancer Support Community plays in the community and learn about the 20 annual Celebrate Wellness food and wine tasting event taking place at South Coast Botanic Garden on Sunday, June 26 from 3 to 7 p.m.
