Hey, everyone two pieces of history I’m going to cover today. First, Apollo 10 launched 48 years ago on this day in 1969. Also, India became the sixth country to demonstrate nuclear weapons capabilities when they tested their first nuclear device on May 18th, 1974, so I'm going to talk a little about space based nuclear surveilance satellites.

On May 17th, 1974 the first Synchronous Meteorological Satellite or SMS-1 was launched on a Delta 2000 series rocket. The SMS-1 and SMS-2 satellites were the first purpose-built geostationary weather satellites ever launched and these missions started a long lineage that leads to the present day GOES missions.

54 years ago today, American astronaut Gordon Cooper lifted off on what was the last Project Mercury mission. Today I cover a little of the history of that launch plus I cover some news from a SpaceX launch earlier today. On the next episode I will be looking at what Gordo did during the last Mercury mission, and talk a little about the new Discovery Channel series "Cooper's Treasure"
