Howes is an Honorary SPE member with three decades of experience in a variety of engineering roles for companies such as Anadarko and Chevron. She is currently the VP of Engineering at Subsurface Consultants & Associates, LLC (SCA). In 2016, Howes was recognized for her advancements with the AIME DeGolyer Distinguished Service Medal. 2020 SPE President Promises to Focus on Strengthening Organization’s Engineering Core

SPE is evaluating how we disseminate our content to make it more visually engaging, bite-sized, and, of course, available through mobile devices. This evaluation includes reviewing the traditional way of publishing technical content through manuscripts. Many students and young professionals want to receive content at a high level first, such as a one-page summary with conclusions, and then can elect to access the full paper if they need the details. SPE may be able to use videos, podcasts, webinars, and other formats to accomplish this.

One of my five focus areas during my time as your President will be to strengthen the tools and methods we use to disseminate knowledge to members. My objectives in this area are to create and elevate SPE initiatives to provide quality content in a variety of formats, such as print, video, and audio, so it is more engaging and consumable for all our members. I will also ensure that we will deliver on SPE’s Strategic Plan goals of having technical dissemination and exchange methods for easy access and delivery of content and tools through mobile devices.   

Our society is membership-driven, and our programs are designed to serve the needs of our diverse and talented membership. To ensure that our society remains relevant for years to come, we need to anticipate the needs of our future members so they are prepared to drive the next wave of innovations and technological advancements for our industry.

Our Society has a wealth of technical content, and it is rapidly growing. The value of that technical content derives from the quality of it. Having high-quality content will continue to strengthen SPE’s professional reputation, which is critical when entering new and emerging markets, attracting new members, and, most importantly, maintaining and engaging our current members and corporate sponsors. Our technical content that is consumed daily by our members is also the source of knowledge for the incoming generation, and we need to ensure that it is of the highest quality for our future innovators and leaders to excel.

To strengthen the quality of SPE’s technical content, I have outlined the following objectives:

1. Increase the awareness and use of all the tools and methods provided to authors to create high-quality papers

There are many ways we will work on strengthening the quality of our technical content. This is something that I am very passionate about and will champion as your SPE President. I am proud of the wealth of technical knowledge our Society has gathered over decades and grateful to all our members who contribute to our technical repositories. Our SPE logo is a symbol of technical excellence, and we all need to ensure our Society’s content and programs are worthy of that stamp of quality.
