November 21, 2019Episode 78: What are the fruits of repentance for a predator? How do we know if someone has repented or if they're a wolf? So many Christians are quick to accept words of repentance, or to mistake remorse for repentance. This practice allows predators to flourish inside the church, where they have unfettered access to more victims. In this episode we lay out tangible fruits of repentance where we can tell whether we are being played or whether someone is actually repentant. November 14, 2019Episode 77: "Why did it take so long to speak up?"-a responseOftentimes it takes many years--even decades before abuse survivors are able to speak up. Common responses are: "Why did it take so long? If you were that uncomfortable, why wait X number of years? Why now? Do you have an ax to grind? Are you looking for fame? Money? Do you want to ruin his reputation?" These are very common responses that abuse survivors hear, especially in the church. In this episode, you'll hear our take on why we believe these responses are the "norm," and how survivors can find support when the church fails to offer it to them. October 31, 2019Episode 75: Sitting On the Ash HeapSo many people are sitting on their ash heap when their world burns down around them. It leaves them incredibly vulnerable and open to attack from others. In this episode, we discuss reasons why people typically don't sit with survivors on their ash heap. We invite people to sit on the ash heap with those who are suffering without offering advice or dishing out blame. October 17, 2019Episode 73: Five Things That Safe Churches Will DoIn this episode, we discuss what five things safe churches will be doing right now. These five things will indicate whether a church is safe or not. This episode stems from a trip Jimmy took to New Mexico, where he encountered a very safe church. When abuse was revealed, the perpetrator was removed immediately and the victims were taken care of and protected by church leaders. Listen to hear what they are doing and why we consider them to be the standard for safe churches. October 10, 2019Episode 72: Sensationalized ForgivenessThe internet almost broke when Brandt Jean forgave his brother Botham's murderer--former Dallas police officer Amber Guyger. Christians took it and ran, touting how wonderful it is that Christians should forgive no matter what. BUT, the most important clause was stripped from Brandt's impact statement: "IF you truly are sorry. . . then I forgive you." Brandt Jean has a very biblical view of forgiveness. He did not sensationalize it; the rest of the world did. Jean did not forgive Amber Guyger for his own healing. He did it because he wanted her to be able to heal. It was a gift that he offered her. And he only did it IF she truly was sorry. In this episode, we explore forgiveness and why so many have turned forgiveness into therapy, when it was never intended to be therapeutic. September 19, 2019Episode 69: Guest Shaun Doughterty Discusses Senator Folmer's Child Porn ChargesShaun Dougherty's disclosure of abuse by his priest when he was a child launched the Pennsylvania Grand Jury Investigation of 2016 into the Altoona-Johnstown Diocese. That sparked the state wide Grand Jury Investigation into the remaining 6 dioceses. That bombshell report identified over 1,000 victims who were abused by over 300 priests who where hidden within the Catholic church. A damning story broke September 18th which reported that Pennsylvania Senator Folmer, who stood opposed to statute of limitation reform, was arrested for child porn. One of the images was of a very young girl performing oral sex on a man. Shaun was "basically laughed out of Folmer's office" when he was pleading with the senator to do something to help protect children. We discuss this and more in this episode. https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2019/09/pennsylvania-state-senator-mike-folmer-child-pornography-charges.html?fbclid=IwAR1e79RJMfG16I_1HjebLm9LvLoGXQk0f6gU_QR5oiFz5jNrxIwwai6MD90Intro--Film Glitch by Snowflake (c) copyright 2017 Licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution Noncommercial (3.0) license. http://dig.ccmixter.org/files/snowflake/56350 Ft: reusenoiseOutro--I Have Often Told You Stories (guitar instrumental) by Ivan Chew (c) copyright 2013 Licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution (3.0) license. http://dig.ccmixter.org/files/ramblinglibrarian/41284...more34minPlay
