December 13, 2018Episode 37: Jesus Preached Repentance, the Heart of the GospelJesus was not one to mince words. He preached repentance. Jesus was not soft on oppression. In fact, he stood up to read from Isaiah to say that he was sent to set the captives free and care for the poor. The heart of the gospel is repentance that leads to forgiveness. We cannot get away from it and this message is what what so sweet to the oppressed in Jesus' day. The demons fled when they saw Jesus. They shuddered at his name. Jesus was not weak. He exposed and confronted evil. December 06, 2018Episode 36: Repentance Is Central to ForgivenessAbuse victims are often forced to forgive their abusers, or they are shamed into it. But repentance is a required condition of forgiveness. In fact, repentance is THE central theme of the Gospel. We cannot get away from repentance. Over and over again the scriptures are clear about bearing fruit in keeping with repentance. Yet this is ignored when church leaders talk to survivors of abuse. They are told, "You need to forgive no matter what." This is a far cry from what the scriptures teach. November 29, 2018Episode 35: The Gift of ForgivenessForgiveness is for the person who carries the debt, not the person who was sinned against. When someone is truly repentant and bears fruit in keeping with repentance, forgiveness is the most important gift the repentant sinner can receive. We cheapen forgiveness when we offer it prematurely or without the sinner repenting. November 01, 2018Episode 32: Abusers Are Dangerous (The Bible Says So)The church has become the wild west where abusers are given full cover and free reign. The Bible, on the other hand, is clear about what we need to do with abusive people and whey they are a threat. Perhaps instead of offering platitudes, we should walk beside the scriptures and listen to what they tell us about abuse. God's word should always be the first place we go to for advice.
