UVA survives against Miami 30-28

The Cincinnati Bengals did not lead the Jacksonville Jaguars for the bulk of their “Thursday Night Football” matchup. With just four seconds remaining, however, kicker Evan McPherson booted a 35-yard field goal to give Cincinnati its third win of the season, rallying back to beat Jacksonville 24-21. 

With the game tied at 21 apiece, Joe Burrow was able to lead the Bengals offense 73 yards down the field to set up the game-winner and hand Jacksonville it’s 19th consecutive loss.

Jaguars were unable to protect a 14-point lead at halftime

Burrow finished the game completing 25 of his 32 throws for 348 yards and two touchdowns.

UVA survives against Miami 30-28Virginia caught a break. Miami didn’t.

And in the end, the Cavaliers needed every second to escape with a win.

Dontayvion Wicks had a circus catch for a touchdown, Brennan Armstrong passed for 268 yards and Virginia added to Miami’s struggles by beating the Hurricanes 30-28 on Thursday night.

Miami freshman kicker Andy Borregales missed a 33-yard field goal try as time expired, the ball bouncing off the left upright. The Hurricanes drove 75 yards in 14 plays on their final drive, almost stealing a game they never led and in which they trailed 27-14 in the third quarter.

The Carolina Panthers outpaced the Houston Texans 24-9 Thursday night at NRG Stadium. Panthers quarterback Sam Darnold completed 23 passes on 34 attempts for 304 yards and rushed for a score as Carolina churned 407 yards total offense despite an injury to running back Christian McCaffrey. Rookie quarterback Davis Mills gets a loss for his first career start, and took four sacks in the process. The third-rounder from Stanford could not get over the 200-yard passing mark with 168 yards through the air.

Bills 35, Dolphins 0Another Buffalo-Miami game, another lopsided Bills victory. And this one might wind up hurting the Dolphins more than most of the others.

Josh Allen threw two touchdown passes, Zach Moss ran for two scores and the Bills knocked out Miami quarterback Tua Tagovailoa early with a rib injury on the way to a 35-0 win on Sunday.

Devin Singletary rushed for 82 yards and another touchdown for the Bills (1-1). Buffalo has won six consecutive games in the series, doing so by an average of 20 points. This marks only the second time the Bills have won six in a row against the Dolphins (1-1).

Bears 20, Bengals 17 
Justin Fields got his first extended look as a pro. And it might be a long-term arrangement.

Fields played the second half after Andy Dalton exited with a knee injury against his former team, and the rookie quarterback used Chicago’s stellar defensive performance to direct the Bears to a 20-17 victory over Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday.

Roquan Smith returned an interception 53 yards for his first career touchdown, one of three straight picks thrown by Burrow and four consecutive takeaways for the Bears during the decisive stretch in their first win of the season.

Broncos 23, Jaguars 13 
Courtland Sutton re-established himself as Denver’s go-to guy with a career day.

With Jerry Jeudy sidelined because of a high ankle sprain, Sutton turned in his best performance as a pro as the Broncos beat woeful Jacksonville 23-13 on Sunday and handed the Jaguars a 17th consecutive loss.

Sutton finished with nine catches for 159 yards, including a 55-yarder on the second play of the second half and a shoestring grab in the third quarter that surely rates among his best plays in four seasons.

Browns 31, Texans 21 
Baker Mayfield wasn’t missing a snap. So once his left shoulder got popped back into its socket, there was no stopping him.

Just like another tough-as-nails quarterback.

”He’s like Brett Favre 2.0,” Browns star defensive end Myles Garrett said with smile. ”Less picks, though.”

Mayfield came back after the injury to throw a touchdown pass and run for a TD, leading Cleveland to a 31-21 win Sunday over the Houston Texans, who were in it until starting quarterback Tyrod Taylor hurt his hamstring.

Rams 27, Colts 24 
Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford refused to let a sore right thumb derail his Sunday plans.

Carson Wentz’s right ankle wasn’t nearly as forgiving.

The Washington Football Team, led by backup quarterback Taylor Heinicke, got their first win of the season Thursday night, 30-29 over the Giants.

Washington’s Dustin Hopkins kicked a 43-yard field goal with no time remaining, on his second attempt at a game-winning kick. He missed from 48 but the Giants’ Dexter Lawrence was flagged for offside. Hopkins then converted on the second chance.

Giants quarterback Daniel Jones had quite the game. He set a franchise record with 95 rushing yards, and he also threw for 249 yards and touchdown. He had a 58-yard TD run in the second quarter nullified by a holding penalty. The holding call, Lawrence’s penalty and a dropped pass in the end zone by Darius Slayton all contributed greatly to the loss.
