  • School focus with Wes Chetty (Part 3)

    The Diocesan College (Colloquially known as Bishops) as it is more commonly known, was established on 2 October 1849 by the Bishop of Cape Town.

    Some of the notable alumni from Bishops include the likes of Mark Shuttleworth, Tim Noakes, Herschelle Gibbs and more recently Francois Louw and Dillyn Leyds.

    In this talk, Wes Chetty who is the 1st XV Head Coach of Bishops Rugby, gave us a good take on how Bishops has been so successful in the popular sport amongst South Africans. Bishops is well-known for the running rugby brand and we look closely as to how the squads have been successful in producing results above their weight.

    How Bishops prepares for the season, how they have dealt with the frustrations of Covid and how they deal with pressure is all in the talk.

    Dick Muir was part of the 2009 Springbok coaching staff with Pieter de Villiers that beat the British and Irish Lions team. It was a physical affair played ta the utmost intensity.

    Bjorn Basson has over 100 Super Rugby caps to his name as well as 11 Springbok caps.


    Throughout his career, Bjorn has had a high conversion rate in terms of his tries scored (almost 1 try every second match) as well as having played for a number of teams such as the notorious Blue Bulls, Southern Kings, Oyonnax, Honda Heat but is now based in the USA with the San Diego Legion Rugby Club.

    I spoke to Bjorn about his dynamic career, where it all began for him, how he has expanded his game to continue to play at the highest level, and how he is finding the rugby brand in the USA.
    Bjorn has a vast amount of experience and is in a good space when it comes to his playing career.

    In this interview, Craig Matthews gives us a breakdown on the recent Test success South Africa had over the West Indies and we have a close look at where the strengths and weaknesses lie in the current SA Squad.

    We also discuss the streamline function of Cricket South Africa and if the SA 'A' squad is being utilized correctly.

    One point we look at is Devon Conway and how well New Zealand cricket is doing at the moment. 

    Craig represented South Africa 18 times in Test matches taking 52 wickets whilst in 56 ODI's matches he took 79 wickets at an average of 25. Craig also took a combined total of 533 wickets at Provincial level for Western Province.

    SACS, also known as South African College Schools, is the oldest school in South Africa, established in 1829. One sport that the school prides itself on is rugby.  With a host of sporting alumni that carry the name of the school very high, we spoke to Head of Rugby, Graeme Wepener to see exactly how the programme has done this season.

    Graeme was the Head Coach of the 1st XV for 6 years and did excellent work and has continued in the sporting department to give his expertise and advice a the Head of Rugby.

    We touched on some of the ambitions of SACS, how the programme is developing rugby players to carry on with the game as a profession as well as how Graeme deals with pressure.
