There’s a movement brewing for more former players and coaches to have involvement in place of the analytics, and SEC Commissioner Sankey is banging the drum for a shift that could give the SEC and Big 10 more involvement. With the Round of 64 a day away, the guys need to get their NCAA men’s college basketball predictions in. Calvin breaks down his bracket round by round, all the way to naming which team he thinks is cutting down the nets in 2024. With another touch of drama, Kansas announced that one of their star players isn’t cleared to play in the tournament, and Calvin thinks it was a sketchy move to play the system and get a lower-seeded first-round opponent.

With basketball in full swing, it’s that time of year to get the NFL stuff out of the way early. As the news cycle is slowing down ahead of the NFL Draft, there’s little of note, but not nothing. The Cleveland Browns acquired Jerry Jeudy from the Denver Broncos via trade earlier this month but have already extended him for three more years. After Jeudy failed to stand out in Denver, Calvin’s a bit curious about why the Browns gave him a decent contract so quickly. Last night, the NCAA “First Four” tipped off and gave the tournament its first dose of madness with Virginia being held under 50 points in a loss to Colorado State.

Calvin hasn’t been expecting the Denver Broncos to move up for a quarterback in next month’s NFL Draft, despite most mock drafts having them doing just that. Friend of the show, Troy Renck of the Denver Post, recently shared a similar thought. Caleb Williams has been touted as a “can’t-miss” prospect to go first overall in the draft, and the Chicago Bears seemed to have made room for him when they traded away Justin Fields. After giving up on their previous QB so quickly, Robert Griffin III is telling Williams that he should “pull an Eli Manning” and force the Bears to draft someone else or trade him but Calvin is quick to shoot it down.

Staying in the NBA with a look at tonight’s schedule, the Dallas Mavericks are jockeying for position in the Western Conference. They’ve got Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs in the Alamo City. College basketball may be starting tonight, but football is king. New Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer is reportedly making just less than what the legendary Nick Saban used to make in Tuscaloosa, and Calvin’s not sure if the incomer’s resume is strong enough to warrant that paycheck.

Where the Chicago Bears used to have a quarterback conundrum, that problem now belongs to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Over the weekend, Chicago traded Justin Fields to the Steelers for a conditional pick in 2025 that is contingent on playing time. After being tapped QB1 over Kenny Pickett, Mike Tomlin reportedly gave Russell Wilson the same assurance when the team traded for Justin Fields. Then why did Fields turn down four other teams to go to the Steel City? Things aren’t adding up.

College football is a messy landscape, and that’s not even factoring the NIL and transfer portal. Thursday’s reports that a new agreement between the conferences was near completion came to fruition on Friday where the powers that be are in agreement on the new 12-team format that could expand further to 14 teams in 2026. Sticking with college sports, 16 female college athletes are suing the NCAA in an effort to “protect Title IX”.
