STORY 1:  After years of delays, The Lawrence is finally rising in downtown Lawrenceville

Construction on the Hilton Tapestry-branded hotel in downtown Lawrenceville has resumed after delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Managed by the Lawrenceville Downtown Development Authority, the project is on track for a mid-2026 opening. Once completed, "The Lawrence" will feature 120 beds, a full-service restaurant, and 5,000 square feet of conference space, making it the only hotel in downtown Lawrenceville. City officials view the hotel as a vital addition to support events, theater shows, and college activities, marking a key milestone in the area’s redevelopment.

STORY 2: Bill restoring law enforcement's ability to request federal help heading to governor

The Georgia General Assembly has passed Senate Bill 99, the Law Enforcement Partners Act, to restore state and local law enforcement's authority to collaborate with federal agencies, an authority unintentionally removed in 2020. Authored by Sen. Randy Robertson and carried by Rep. Matt Reeves, the bill allows law enforcement to request federal assistance for disaster management and joint task forces addressing issues like human trafficking, gang activity, and drug dealing. Georgia and Nebraska were the only states lacking such a law. The bill now awaits Governor Brian Kemp's decision to sign or veto it.

STORY 3: Northeast Georgia Medical Center Braselton Celebrates 10th Anniversary

The Northeast Georgia Medical Center (NGMC) Braselton celebrated its 10th anniversary, highlighting milestones like over 10,000 deliveries, 500,000 emergency visits, and 81,000 inpatient stays. The campus features medical offices, a cancer center, and urgent care, while NGHS has invested over $1 billion in regional growth. With nearly 2,000 staff, strong community support, and 800 volunteers donating 138,000 hours, NGMC Braselton continues to drive healthcare access and local development.

Metro Atlanta and Georgia are expected to outperform the national economy due to strong investments in logistics, healthcare, ports, and manufacturing recovery, according to Alfie Meek of Georgia Tech's Economic Development Research. However, challenges like persistent inflation, high mortgage rates, and slow wage growth in low-wage sectors remain nationwide. Meek also predicts slight unemployment increases and limited Federal Reserve rate cuts. Despite this, U.S. manufacturing shows promise with fewer regulations and lower energy costs. Over 200 Gwinnett business leaders attended the event, aiming to leverage these insights for sustained growth.

Gwinnett County will celebrate Earth Day 2025 with a major recycling event at Coolray Field on Saturday, April 26, from 9 a.m. to noon. Themed “Our Power, Our Planet,” the event, hosted by Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful and Gwinnett Solid Waste, will collect hard-to-recycle items like electronics, paint, tires, clothing, and paper. In 2024, the event diverted 72 tons of waste from landfills. Volunteers aged 16+ are needed to assist. Activities include face painting, touch-a-truck, and refreshments. Fees apply for certain electronics, and participants should use disposable containers for recyclables. Visit GwinnettCB.org for details.

STORY 2: Gwinnett Technical College Sets Enrollment Records

Gwinnett Technical College has achieved record enrollment with over 11,500 students this spring, marking an 8th consecutive semester of growth and a 15% increase from last year. President Dr. D. Glen Cannon credits the rise to students transferring from four-year colleges for affordable, hands-on programs, the school’s flexible learning options, and a 99% job placement rate. Offering 160+ programs, Gwinnett Tech recently launched a Mazda automotive program and expanded its nursing program to the Alpharetta campus, addressing evolving job market demands. The college remains focused on career-driven, real-world education.

STORY 4: General Assembly passes transgender sports bill

Georgia's General Assembly passed Senate Bill 1, banning transgender student athletes from competing in female sports, with votes largely along party lines. The legislation applies to public schools, colleges, and private institutions competing against them, requiring athletes to compete based on the sex on their birth certificates. Supporters argue it ensures fairness and safety for female athletes, while opponents claim it targets vulnerable transgender youth and addresses a non-existent issue in Georgia. Lt. Gov. Burt Jones and House Speaker Jon Burns praised the bill as a step toward protecting female sports. It now awaits Gov. Brian Kemp's signature.

STORY 5: Opening delayed for federal park at Buford Dam

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has closed the Laurel Ridge Trail south of Buford Dam and Lower Pool East Park until June 28 for construction of a new footbridge. While the 3.8-mile trail’s northern section remains open, visitors cannot complete the full loop. Lower Pool East Park, typically open in late March, will also stay closed. The Corps encourages visitors to explore alternative trails and recreation areas during this time. Additionally, Bald Ridge Creek Campground’s opening is delayed until April 14 for septic system repairs.

A former Gwinnett School of Math Science and Technology student, Hongming Mo, 17, faces felony charges for allegedly recording female classmates in the bathroom at least 13 times since last October. Mo was arrested on Feb. 25 after being caught recording a student in a girls' restroom. GSMST Principal Logan Malm confirmed Mo is no longer a student at the school, and swift disciplinary and legal actions were taken. Released on a $5,000 bond, Mo is barred from returning to GSMST. The incident was reported by another student, highlighting the school’s “See Something, Say Something” safety culture.

STORY 7:  Lawrenceville annexation bill headed to governor's desk

Lawrenceville is one step away from a May 2026 referendum on annexing 5.3 square miles, potentially adding 19,000 residents and becoming Gwinnett County's largest city. The Georgia Senate unanimously passed House Bill 739, awaiting Gov. Brian Kemp's signature. If approved, the annexation would balance the city's tax base, reducing tax-exempt properties from 40% to 21%. Residents in the annexed areas would see no net change in millage rates but would shift to city services. The expansion, effective January 2027, would require $9 million annually for additional services, offset by matching revenue.

STORY 1:  City of Norcross Launches Valet Parking Pilot Program

Norcross has launched a six-month Valet Parking Pilot Program to enhance downtown parking convenience. Partnering with G5 Parking Solutions, the service began on March 14, with over 50 cars using it during the inaugural weekend. Valet drop-off is located near The Crossing, operating Fridays and Saturdays (3:30–11 p.m.) and Sundays (3:30–9 p.m.) for $5 per vehicle. Standard public parking remains available, and the city is making adjustments based on feedback to improve the program. Residents are encouraged to share their experiences to help refine the service.

STORY 2: New York investigation leads to arrest of suspect in Suwanee murder

Gwinnett County police have arrested 20-year-old Delano Hill of Suwanee in connection with a 2022 murder and as a person of interest in a New York City crime. Hill is accused of fatally stabbing Matthew Jones on Sept. 5, 2022, when Hill was 17. Charged with felony and malice murder and aggravated assault, Hill was linked to the NYC case after sharing undisclosed details about a homicide. Following a joint investigation with NYPD, Hill was arrested at his home on March 21 and is now in Gwinnett County Jail.

STORY 3: Lawmakers decide to ban cellphones in public elementary and middle schools

Starting next fall, Georgia elementary and middle school students will be banned from using personal cellphones during school hours under the “Distraction-Free Education Act,” which passed the General Assembly with bipartisan support. Schools must provide ways for parents to contact children via the principal’s office, with exemptions for medical or disability-related needs. The ban, effective fully by July 2026, aims to reduce classroom distractions and improve student well-being, echoing global concerns about technology’s impact on children. While some suggest extending the ban to high schools, the current focus is on younger students. Gov. Brian Kemp will decide whether to sign the bill.

Isaiah Esquilin-Perez, 22, was sentenced to three consecutive life terms for sexually assaulting a 10-year-old girl in Gwinnett County. Convicted on seven counts, including aggravated child molestation and incest, his crimes were discovered in April 2023 when the victim's parents found incriminating video footage. After fleeing, Esquilin-Perez evaded police for 18 hours before surrendering. He must also register as a sex offender. Gwinnett DA Patsy Austin-Gatson expressed hope for the victim's healing, calling the sentence justice for the family.

STORY 5: Gwinnett legislators drop plan to cut school board member pay for firing superintendents early

Legislation aimed at cutting Gwinnett County school board members' salaries for early superintendent firings has been revised, removing the controversial pay reduction provision. House Bill 767 initially sought to penalize board members financially after costly buyouts for fired superintendents Calvin Watts and J. Alvin Wilbanks. The revised bill now focuses on allowing all board members, not just the chairperson, to speak to the media. Discussions about limiting "lame duck" board actions or superintendent contract extensions were deferred. The board is currently searching for a permanent superintendent, with interim Al Taylor stepping in on April 2.

STORY 1: 'Beyond heroic' — VALOR Awards Honor Gwinnett Public Safety Officials

The Gwinnett Chamber hosted its 20th Annual VALOR Public Safety Awards, honoring first responders for their dedication to keeping Gwinnett County safe. Held at the Gas South District, the event gathered over 360 attendees, including business leaders and community members. President Nick Masino highlighted the vital role of public safety in fostering a thriving community. Awards recognized exceptional service, including Major Michelle Anglin for Leadership, Corporal Sean Donahue as Public Safety Person of the Year, and the Behavioral Health Unit as Public Safety Unit of the Year. The ceremony celebrated the heroism and commitment of Gwinnett's first responders.

STORY 2:   Tort reform bill squeaks through Georgia House

The Georgia House narrowly passed Senate Bill 68, a GOP-backed tort reform measure, with a 91-82 vote. The bill, a priority for Gov. Brian Kemp, aims to curb excessive jury awards and stabilize liability insurance costs by introducing premises liability guidelines, allowing seat belt evidence in auto cases, and limiting medical damage claims to actual costs. Supporters argue it will benefit businesses, while opponents, including many Democrats, claim it reduces access to justice and unfairly impacts crime victims. The bill includes a carveout for sex trafficking victims but faces criticism for excluding other crime victims. It now returns to the Senate for review.

STORY 3:  Georgia Supreme Court takes up State Election Board rules changes

Civil rights and voting rights groups urged the Georgia Supreme Court to uphold a lower-court ruling invalidating seven election law changes made by the Republican-controlled State Election Board (SEB) last fall. The changes included hand-counting ballots, delaying result certification for fraud inquiries, stricter absentee ballot requirements, and expanded poll watcher areas. A Fulton County judge previously ruled the SEB overstepped its authority, violating the separation of powers. However, state and Republican lawyers argued the SEB acted within its rights and that the plaintiffs lacked legal standing to sue. The case centers on the balance of legislative and executive powers.

STORY 4:  Gwinnett Police Again Ask For Public's Help In Fatal Hit-and-Run Investigation

The Gwinnett County Police Department is seeking new information about a hit-and-run that killed 24-year-old Mecha Woodard on September 27, 2024. Woodard was struck while walking on the eastbound shoulder of State Route 316 near Breckenridge Blvd. The suspect vehicle, a Lexus RX350 or RX450 (2019-2022), sustained damage to the front passenger-side bumper and headlight. Investigators urge anyone with information to contact Gwinnett Police Detectives at 678-442-5653 or submit anonymous tips to Crime Stoppers at 404-577-8477 or www.stopcrimeATL.com, with potential cash rewards for leads.

STORY 5:  Senate measure to trim state agency rules advances toward a vote by the House

The Georgia House Budget and Fiscal Affairs Oversight Committee advanced Senate Bill 28, the "Red Tape Rollback Act," aimed at reducing outdated or burdensome state agency rules. Sponsored by Sen. Greg Dolezal, the bill requires agencies to review rules every four years and conduct impact analyses for proposed rules costing $3 million or more in compliance over five years. Republicans view it as a way to streamline bureaucracy, while Democrats argue it could burden agencies and taxpayers. Amendments raised the impact analysis threshold and required analyses to be posted online. The bill now heads to the House Rules Committee.

    Break 3:

STORY 6:  State Senate health committee approves IVF bill

House Bill 428, which codifies the right to in vitro fertilization (IVF) in Georgia, unanimously passed a Senate committee. Prompted by an Alabama ruling treating frozen embryos as children, the bill ensures IVF remains accessible in Georgia without introducing new regulations. Sponsor Rep. Lehman Franklin, who has personal experience with IVF, emphasized the bill simply formalizes current practices. Parents shared emotional testimonies about their IVF journeys, while some called for ethical regulations on embryo handling. The bill now heads to the Senate Rules Committee for a full Senate vote.

STORY 7:  Teen fatally shot during 'Senior Skip Day' at Denny Dobbs Park

An 18-year-old Salem High School student, Justin Etienne, was fatally shot Wednesday at Denny Dobbs Park during an informal "Senior Skip Day" event involving students from Newton and Rockdale counties. The Newton County Sheriff’s Office described the incident as isolated, with no gang involvement or additional injuries. Grief counselors were made available at schools, and law enforcement increased patrols as a precaution. Authorities are urging witnesses or anyone with information to come forward. Both Newton and Rockdale school systems expressed condolences and emphasized the event was not school-sanctioned. The investigation is ongoing.
