STORY 5: Senators question economic development chief on delayed EV plant
Electric vehicle manufacturer, Rivian, has decided to indefinitely delay the construction of its new manufacturing plant near Covington, Georgia. This decision was met with disappointment from Georgia's top economic development official, Pat Wilson, even though he confirmed that Rivian remains committed to the state.
Despite this setback, Rivian intends to produce its new R2 midsize SUV model at an existing facility located in Illinois. The state and local authorities had previously offered Rivian incentives worth $1.5 billion, including tax credits and infrastructure improvements, to secure the deal.
So far, Rivian has made two payments amounting to $3 million to the local development authority. While the project is currently on hold, there are concerns among senators about the site remaining vacant until 2030. Despite these concerns, Wilson maintains an optimistic outlook, asserting that the site is appealing enough to attract another manufacturing tenant if necessary.

A devastating car crash in Peachtree Corners resulted in three fatalities, including a 5-year-old girl, and left three others wounded. The incident occured at the crossroads of Peachtree Corners Circle and Elmside Village Lane, involving a dark blue BMW and a yellow Chevrolet Camaro. The BMW, while attempting a left turn onto Peachtree Corners Circle, collided with the Camaro traveling south on the same route. The impact was on the BMW's driver's side door.
The occupants of the BMW, Armas Harding and Laura Rueda, both from Brookhaven, were pronounced dead at the scene. The Camaro's driver and front-seat passenger sustained severe injuries. Two children in the back seat, ages 5 and 6, were seriously hurt. The younger child, Aura Camarono, tragically passed away at the hospital due to her injuries.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the cause of this tragic incident.
STORY 2: Gwinnett Police: Suwanee Man Who Allegedly Assaulted Wife Crashed Car While Fleeing Police
Lance Bradley Nelson, a 47-year-old Suwanee resident, is facing multiple charges following an alleged domestic assault incident. According to reports, Nelson is accused of physically assaulting his wife and keeping her at gunpoint in their home over a two-day period. The situation reportedly began as a verbal dispute before escalating.
Following the assault, the victim managed to escape to a neighbor's residence and seek assistance. Nelson subsequently fled the scene in a grey Mercedes SUV, sparking a high-speed chase with the police. During the pursuit, Nelson reportedly crashed into several vehicles, including two police cars, before abandoning his SUV.
Nelson then attempted to escape on foot but was eventually detained by officers near a local hotel. He is currently receiving treatment for minor injuries prior to being taken into custody. Fortunately no motorists involved in the collisions sustained any injuries.
STORY 3: Local Democrats seeking re-election will face challenges from within their own party
An array of Democrats in Gwinnett County is set to face internal party challenges in the forthcoming primary election, indicating a potential division within the party and lack of unanimous support for incumbent candidates. The list of challenged individuals includes County Commission Chairwoman Nicole Love Hendrickson, Sheriff Keybo Taylor, District Attorney Patsy Austin-Gatson, District 3 Commissioner Jasper Watkins, and Tax Commissioner Denise Mitchell.

Similarly, District Attorney Patsy Austin-Gatson is set to compete against two prosecutors from her own office. Chairwoman Hendrickson faces opposition from ex-state Representative Donna McLeod; the victor will then go on to face a Republican candidate in the November elections.

STORY 4: Artificial intelligence identifying new potentially deadly COVID-19 variants
Researchers from The University of Manchester and Oxford University have utilized an AI framework, known as CLASSIX, to rapidly identify and monitor emerging COVID-19 variants. This innovative system streamlines the processing of extensive genomic data, thereby automating the detection of potentially problematic strains.
Utilizing this approach, researchers can analyze an impressive 5.7 million sequences in a span of one to two days. This not only significantly reduces the time and resources needed compared to traditional methods but also enables faster responses to new variants.
The CLASSIX framework integrates dimension reduction techniques with explainable clustering algorithms. This combination allows for the grouping of similar sequences based on their genetic patterns, facilitating more efficient tracking of variants.
STORY 5: Social media filters fueling desire for more plastic surgery
A recent study suggests an alarming trend where individuals are pursuing plastic surgery to mimic the filtered images of themselves seen on social media platforms such as Snapchat and Instagram. This phenomenon, referred to as "Snapchat dysmorphia," stems from unrealistic beauty standards propagated by photo-editing applications.
The researchers found a link between frequent social media use and an increased desire for cosmetic procedures. This is especially prevalent among individuals who heavily engage with filtered images and influencers. The study, carried out by Boston University, stresses the necessity for healthcare practitioners to consider the influence of social media on patients' self-perception and aspirations for cosmetic alterations.

On March 23rd and 24th, youth hunters and individuals with mobility impairments will be permitted to hunt exclusively on private land.
Youth hunters under the age of 16 are required to be accompanied by an adult during their hunts. On the other hand, those with a certified disability can hunt independently provided they have the appropriate documentation. While youth hunters under 16 are not required to possess a license, those aged 16 and above must have one. The state also offers designated hunting opportunities for young hunters through quota hunts on Wildlife Management Areas. However, the deadline for applications for this year's quota hunts has already passed.

The invitation extended by Rep. McBath to Agyeiwaa was a strategic move aimed at bringing attention to issues related to maternal health, particularly given Georgia's high maternal mortality rate. Both Agyeiwaa and McBath chose to wear white attire during the event, a color traditionally associated with reproductive rights.
In her professional role, Agyeiwaa is dedicated to establishing connections between mothers and babies in Georgia with essential resources that promote growth and development. Her efforts are especially targeted towards aiding underserved populations within the state.

STORY 3: 7 Tips for Helping You Afford College
The average in-state tuition at public colleges has climbed to over $10,000, while private colleges are averaging a steep $42,162. However, Estephany Flores, a staunch advocate for financial aid, urges students not to be discouraged by these numbers. She highlights the importance of viewing a college education as a future investment. Flores points out that dual enrollment programs, which allow high school students to accrue college credits, are often overlooked resources that can substantially cut down tuition costs.
Dr. Reanna Berry, an Associate Professor, offers several strategies to help offset tuition expenses. These include early savings plans, pursuing two-year degrees, enrolling as transient students, taking AP/IB classes, applying for grants, and exploring work-study opportunities. Dr. Berry cautions students against depending on loans as their primary financial solution and alerts them to potential scams aimed at those seeking college funding.
Despite the financial hurdles, Gwinnett College continues to maintain its affordability, providing a wide range of options for financial assistance. Flores encourages students to contact the college's financial aid office for tailored advice and support in navigating the financial aspects of college education.

STORY 4: LAKO: Found money: Should you use an old 401(k) to pay off a child's student loans?
Many parents harbor the desire to financially support their adult children, which is a factor that should be considered during financial planning. Some may discover dormant 401(k) accounts and consider utilizing these funds to settle their child's student loans. However, drawing from retirement accounts for this purpose can trigger penalties and taxes, thereby diminishing the sum available for debt repayment.
The decision between investing for the future or paying off debt needs careful consideration, considering aspects such as interest rates and potential returns on investments. Financial experts typically discourage depleting retirement savings, instead proposing alternative strategies such as reallocating current savings or assisting with loan payments directly from regular income.
STORY 5: Lawyer accusing Fulton DA of conflict details accusations of misconduct at Georgia Senate hearing
Ashleigh Merchant, the legal counsel for Michael Roman, appeared before a state Senate committee to testify about her discovery of an alleged romantic relationship between Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis and special prosecutor Nathan Wade. Details of the affair were revealed by Terrence Bradley, Wade's previous law partner, who voiced concerns about Wade's behavior. In response to these allegations, the Senate committee issued a subpoena to Merchant to delve deeper into the accusations, concentrating on potential conflicts of interest and monetary rewards in the case.
Despite the ongoing controversy, Willis reiterated her commitment to continue with the felony racketeering case against Trump and his associates.

Famed for their distinctive sweet taste, Vidalia onions will be accessible in supermarkets across the country from April until early September.
The determination of the pack date is influenced by factors such as soil and weather conditions, which serve to ensure the superior quality of the onions. With approximately 11,000 acres set aside for cultivation during the 2024 season, producers are optimistic about another prosperous year.
Vidalia onions, unique to 20 counties in southern Georgia due to specific environmental conditions, are protected under federal and state legislation.

Arcado Elementary School has received the Gold Star School designation from the Georgia Department of Education for its involvement in the Georgia Schools Care initiative. This initiative aimed to raise funds for children in foster care. Arcado Elementary was one of over 50 schools, districts, and private donors that collectively raised more than $43,600. The funds were directed towards supporting disadvantaged children through a partnership with Clark’s Christmas Kids, ensuring holiday gifts for every child in Georgia’s foster care system. STORY 4: Georgia House to consider bills to toughen penalties for fentanyl distribution
The Georgia Senate has passed legislation aimed at toughening penalties for those selling fentanyl that results in overdose deaths. Named after Austin Walters, a victim of fentanyl-laced drugs, the bill creates a new charge of aggravated involuntary manslaughter, carrying a sentence of 10 to 30 years or life in prison. The legislation aims to hold dealers accountable without needing to prove they knew the substance was tainted. However, concerns have been raised about unintended consequences, such as felony charges for unknowing individuals. Additionally, the Georgia House is set to consider Senate Bill 371, the "Daniel D. Podsiadly, Jr. Act," which would provide injured police officers with lost wages not covered by worker's compensation insurance. The bill aims to alleviate financial burdens for officers recovering from serious injuries sustained on duty.
STORY 5: Candidates begin qualifying at Georgia Capitol to keep and win jobs from Congress to Legislature
Candidates from both major parties filed paperwork to qualify for various political positions at the Georgia Capitol. All 14 Congressional representatives, 56 state senators, and 180 state representatives are up for election. Notable developments include the open seat in the 3rd District, where several Republicans, including former state lawmakers, have entered the race. In terms of Democratic incumbents, all five representatives qualified. Democratic Party Chair Nikema Williams expressed optimism about the party's prospects in Georgia, despite recent polling showing mixed sentiments towards President Biden. Congresswoman Lucy McBath is running in the 6th District after redistricting, while Republican Congressman Rich McCormick moves to the 7th District.

The case revolved around a drug-related robbery that took place at Gilead's residence. Quintanar, along with two other individuals, attempted to steal $600 that had been exchanged during a drug transaction. During the incident, Quintanar pointed a firearm at Ciavy Wiles, a friend of Gilead's. Gilead was fatally shot by Quintanar when he tried to intervene.
Following the shooting, the other two suspects fled the scene. One of them, Sebastian Resendiz-Garcia, later entered a guilty plea for voluntary manslaughter. The trial for the third suspect, Miguel Gonzalez, is still pending.
STORY 2: As electric vehicles become more prominent, Gwinnett Tech is stepping up its EV study to meet the demand
Gwinnett Technical College is set to broaden its offerings with the addition of a program focused on the maintenance of electric vehicles. This groundbreaking initiative will also include a course on servicing vehicle charging stations. The introduction of this program makes Gwinnett Tech the first technical college in Georgia to provide such a course.
Over the years, the automotive technology department at the college has been steadily incorporating EV-related subjects into its standard curriculum. The college will soon roll out a certification program dedicated to hybrid-electric and battery-electric vehicles.
The partnership between Gwinnett Tech, Siemens, and other departments facilitates students' acquisition of skills in the installation and upkeep of charging stations.
STORY 3: Sen. Jon Ossoff holding two constituent services events in Gwinnett this month
Senator Jon Ossoff's office has announced plans to host two community service events in Gwinnett County this month, with the objective of guiding residents through issues related to federal agencies. The inaugural event is scheduled to take place in Norcross on Wednesday and will be followed by a second event in Duluth on March 26.

STORY 4: Georgia Power’s request for more electricity comes under fire
Georgia Power has submitted a request to energy regulators for permission to generate and purchase additional electricity. This move is intended to cater to the escalating demand triggered by the influx of new businesses in Georgia, notably high-tech data centers. The utility's strategy involves the rapid incorporation of new electricity sources, including gas and oil turbines, solar power, and battery storage.
However, this proposal has been met with skepticism from various experts and stakeholders who have questioned both the accuracy of the utility's forecast and its continued reliance on fossil fuels. They advocate for alternative approaches such as enhancing transmission line capacity and implementing distributed solar and battery systems.
Controversy has also arisen around the tax breaks currently offered to data centers. A proposed bill seeks to suspend these exemptions temporarily and establish a commission to scrutinize the locations of data centers and their energy supplies. If enacted, this suspension could inject a degree of uncertainty into the operations of data centers and potentially impact the accuracy of Georgia Power's electricity forecast.
STORY 5: Georgia Gwinnett College Hosting Preview Day On March 23
Georgia Gwinnett College is set to host its Preview Day on March 23, providing potential students with an in-depth look at its programs, admission process, financial aid options, and student housing facilities. The event, scheduled to take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., will feature campus tours, opportunities to engage with student ambassadors, as well as breakout sessions conducted in Spanish.
In a bid to encourage applications, GGC will be waiving application fees throughout the month of March. It's worth noting that approximately 82% of students at GGC are recipients of financial aid.
STORY 6: Delta Community Credit Union Accepting Entries for Youth Essay Contest
Delta Community Credit Union has announced its 2024 Youth Essay Contest, open to students in the third, fourth, and fifth grades across metro Atlanta counties. The contest invites these young minds to ponder the question, "If you had unlimited money, what would you do to make an impact at your school?" Submissions are limited to 75 words and must be submitted online by March 31.
The contest will award seven winners from each grade level with a $100 deposit into a Delta Community Youth Savings Account. The winners of the contest will be revealed in April, coinciding with National Youth Month.
In addition to the contest, Delta Community Credit Union also offers scholarships and complimentary financial education classes to the community.
STORY 7: State Senate passes bill aimed at American Library Association
The Georgia Senate has passed Senate Bill 390, a legislation that prohibits libraries from allocating funds towards materials provided by the American Library Association. The bill gained approval with a vote tally of 33-20, reflecting a clear divide along party lines.
Critics, predominantly Democrats, argue that the bill detracts from efforts to enhance literacy rates in the state. However, amendments have been made to the bill to enable Valdosta State University's library sciences program to maintain its ALA certification. The bill is now slated for review by the state House.
We’ll have final thoughts after this.

STORY 4: How we ‘brainwash’ ourselves while we sleep
Neurobiologists have discovered that our brains undergo a cleansing process every night during sleep, similar to washing dishes, to rid themselves of waste accumulated during the day. This process involves coordinated brain waves propelling fluid through brain tissue to remove debris. The findings, based on studying sleeping mice, suggest new strategies for tackling diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, which involve the buildup of waste in the brain. Enhancing this brain cleansing process could potentially allow people to sleep less while maintaining health, benefiting those with insomnia. Understanding this process better could lead to therapies to prevent or delay neurodegenerative diseases by improving waste removal from the brain. The brain's cleaning method may vary depending on the type and amount of waste present.
STORY 5: Georgia Democrats push for state laws protecting reproductive rights following Alabama court ruling
Georgia Democrats are urging Republicans to safeguard access to in vitro fertilization (IVF) and contraception in response to a recent Alabama Supreme Court ruling deeming fertilized eggs as children under state law. Sen. Elena Parent, the lead sponsor of the bill, emphasizes the need for certainty amid concerns that couples in Georgia may reconsider IVF due to legal uncertainty. Democrats call for legislative action to protect IVF and contraception, expressing concerns over potential legal implications similar to those seen in Alabama. However, Senate Majority Leader Steve Gooch dismisses the need for such legislation, citing the ruling's applicability only to Alabama. Despite Democratic efforts, Gooch opposes addressing the issue hastily in the Senate, raising questions about the timing and necessity of the proposed bill. Additionally, Democrats highlight the lack of congressional action to safeguard contraception access following a Supreme Court justice's opinion suggesting reconsideration of precedents like Roe v. Wade.

STORY 6: Georgia Power could face new law to disclose its cost of power generation on customer bills
Georgia Power customers are facing higher electricity rates and increased costs for nuclear expansion, prompting a push for transparency in billing. House Bill 1406, championed by Chairman Don Parsons, requires Georgia Power to disclose information about fuel costs on customer bills, aiming to enhance understanding of energy charges. This comes amid concerns over Georgia Power's business practices and recent rate hikes. While the company opposes the bill, arguing that much of the information is available online, proponents emphasize the need for clarity, particularly regarding fluctuating fuel costs. Critics accuse Georgia Power of prioritizing secrecy over customer interests, highlighting the importance of transparency in government-run monopolies. The bill's fate now rests with the House Rules Committee ahead of the legislative deadline.
STORY 7: Kim Towne, City Of Suwanee Earn Event Awards
At the 2024 Kaleidoscope Awards Gala by the Southeast Festivals and Events Association, Suwanee received seven awards, including Event Professional of the Year, for its 2023 event season. STORY 1: Gunman Convicted Of Killing Car Dealership Co-Owner In Murder-For-Hire Plot
A Gwinnett County jury has sentenced Lilburn resident Wesley "Draco" Vickers to life in prison without parole for his involvement in the murder-for-hire of Snellville car dealership owner Courtney Owens in late 2022. Vickers was found guilty of malice and felony murder, aggravated assault, and firearm possession charges. Prosecutors allege that Stoney Lamar Williams, Owens' business partner and ex-boyfriend, orchestrated the plot. Williams is set to stand trial in March. Vickers received an additional five-year sentence for possessing the murder weapon. Owens was fatally shot at Royal Court Motors, where she co-owned the dealership. The Gwinnett County District Attorney vowed to hold perpetrators of violence accountable.
STORY 2: Georgia lawmakers push immigration bills in response to UGA student’s death
Following the tragic murder of 22-year-old Laken Riley in Athens, Georgia, discussions about immigration policy have been reignited in the state legislature. The suspect in Riley's killing, Jose Antonio Ibarra, is an undocumented immigrant with a history of legal issues. Governor Brian Kemp and other Republicans have blamed federal immigration policy, while Democrats accuse the GOP of politicizing the tragedy. Proposed legislation includes bills to refund property taxes for areas with lax law enforcement, penalize jailers for not reporting inmates' immigration status, and transfer soon-to-be-released undocumented inmates to sanctuary states. These bills have until Thursday to pass one chamber for a chance at becoming law this year.
STORY 3: Research reveals potential breakthrough in breast cancer treatment
New research suggests that breast cancer could be treated with a drug that mimics testosterone's effects, offering a potentially less toxic approach compared to traditional estrogen-blocking treatments. The drug enobosarm stimulates the androgen receptor, which has been found to suppress estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) breast cancer, the most common type. In a study involving 136 postmenopausal women with advanced ER+ breast cancer, enobosarm showed promising antitumor effects without causing adverse side effects or masculinizing symptoms. This novel hormonal strategy offers hope for a less debilitating form of treatment, with potential for further investigation in combination with other therapies.

STORY 4: Gwinnett Educators Group Endorses Shana White In School Board District 3 Race
The Gwinnett County Association of Educators (GCAE) announced its endorsement of veteran teacher Shana White in the District 3 race for the Gwinnett County Board of Education. The decision was based on White's dedication to public service, her recent teaching experience within GCPS classrooms, and her platform informed by those experiences. White, a third-generation educator, has taught at various schools within GCPS and currently works at the Kapor Foundation. The endorsement follows GCAE's previous endorsements for Leroy Ranel and Tarece Johnson-Morgan in other school board districts. While White secured GCAE's endorsement, other candidates in the District 3 race, such as Yanin Cortes and Steven Gasper, have received endorsements from Mary Kay Murphy and U.S. Rep. Rich McCormick, respectively.
STORY 5: Georgia lawmakers hold out hope for bill that would restrict publication of mugshots
The practice of sheriff's offices posting mugshots of booked individuals has faced criticism due to its potential consequences, including job loss and reputational damage, especially for those not convicted of a crime. Representative Roger Bruce proposed House Bill 882 to restrict mugshot posting until conviction, with fines for non-compliance. However, a similar bill by Representative Jordan Riley has different provisions, such as delaying release until the sheriff deems it safe, raising concerns about restricting access for journalists and potential workload issues for sheriff's offices. While there is bipartisan support for such measures, they face challenges in committee and raise debates over free speech and the protection of innocent individuals.

Hospitals in Gwinnett County are expanding their services with new facilities, including Northside Hospital's 100,000-square-foot medical office building in Buford, set to open this summer. Additionally, construction on a 15-story tower at Northside Gwinnett in Lawrenceville is underway, expected to add over 300 patient beds and make it the largest campus in the hospital system by 2025. Another Northside medical office building is planned on Sugarloaf Parkway. Northeast Georgia Health System is also expanding its Braselton hospital campus with a $565 million project, adding 150 licensed acute care beds and doubling the number of treatment rooms in the Emergency Department. The expansion is scheduled to open in phases, with the first phase expected in summer 2025 and the second phase in 2026.
STORY 2: Northeast Gwinnett Residents Face Big Decision On Area's Future In Cityhood Vote. An Update
The proposed cityhood of Mulberry in Gwinnett County is headed to a referendum vote after Governor Brian Kemp signed Senate Bill 333 into law. If approved, Mulberry would become Gwinnett County's 17th city, encompassing approximately 41,000 residents and becoming the county's largest city by geographic size and the second-largest by population. Proponents, including House Majority Leader Chuck Efstration, highlight the opportunity for local control over planning and zoning decisions without imposing a city property tax. However, opponents express concerns about potential financial implications for Gwinnett County, with projections indicating an annual loss of $9.1 million in revenue. The referendum will appear on ballots in May, marking a significant decision for Gwinnett County residents.
STORY 3: PROGRESS: Other Big Projects To Look Forward To In 2024
Several significant projects are underway in Gwinnett County, shaping its future in 2024:
- The Westin Atlanta Gwinnett hotel at the Gas South District, with 360 rooms, will open soon, offering amenities such as a Starbucks, restaurant, and rooftop bar. It's been in development for over a decade and will cater to visitors attending events at the Gas South Arena and Convention Center.

- The Georgia Department of Transportation plans to convert the Hi Hope Road at State Route 316 intersection into an interchange, with bid letting expected this summer, marking progress in converting 316 into a limited-access highway from Gwinnett County to Athens.

STORY 4: Berkmar High Students Make Film About ASL Teacher Troy Bowman Through Roku Change Maker Program
Gwinnett County is becoming a hub for film and television production, fostering young filmmakers through collaborations with Explore Gwinnett, Gwinnett County Public Schools, and Fresh Films. Students from Berkmar High School recently produced a short film about veteran ASL teacher Troy Bowman as part of the Roku Change Makers program. The collaboration provides students with creative outlets and opportunities to showcase their talents while highlighting community changemakers. This initiative has received support from local organizations and grants, indicating its growth and potential for long-term sustainability.
STORY 5: CareSource donates $1 million to help youths aging out of foster care
CareSource, a nonprofit health-care organization, is donating $1 million to support young people aging out of Georgia's foster care system. This contribution aligns with the Fostering Success Act, which offers tax credits to fund wraparound services for youths leaving foster care. These services include education support, food, medical care, rental assistance, and transportation funds. The Act aims to address challenges faced by foster youth, such as homelessness and reliance on welfare programs. CareSource's donation follows a trend of corporate support for critical social programs, reflecting a commitment to improving community well-being.
STORY 6: Georgia Power hikes prompt legislation to restore consumer advocate for PSC electricity rate cases
Georgia Power customers will face higher electricity rates due to nuclear expansion and fuel costs, prompting legislative action to shift utility regulator responsibilities. Senate Bill 457 aims to create a consumer's utility counsel to advocate for the public in rate cases, responding to recent rate increases approved by the Public Service Commission (PSC). The bill seeks to ensure robust information is considered, although the PSC argues that existing advocacy staff already represents consumer interests effectively. Additionally, House Bill 1220 proposes giving the PSC oversight of private water companies with more than 1,000 customers, following complaints of exorbitant bills. These legislative efforts aim to address concerns of ratepayers and improve utility regulation in Georgia.
STORY 7: Savannah sculptor Jerome Meadows tells Black history via public art
Jerome Meadows, a renowned artist whose career was shaped by his childhood dreams of Michelangelo, has become a prominent figure in Savannah's art scene. Raised in the Bronx, Meadows found solace in art, aiming to break free from his circumstances like Michelangelo's sculptures. His journey led him to Savannah, where he established MeadowLark Studio and contributed significantly to the city's public art landscape. Meadows' work, which addresses themes of African American heritage and racial injustice, has garnered national recognition, including his recent memorial in Chattanooga commemorating a lynching victim. Through his art, Meadows aims to inspire social change and create impactful narratives.

STORY 1: Gwinnett Police Investigating Apparent Murder-Suicide; Toddler Safe
A tragic incident unfolded in Lawrenceville, Gwinnett County, where police are investigating a possible case of murder-suicide. The bodies of a husband and wife were discovered inside a home on Sterling Drive on Wednesday. Also found unharmed at the residence was a toddler, whose safety amidst the tragedy provides a glimmer of hope.
The police responded to a welfare check at the property just after 11:30 a.m., prompted by a family member's concern when they could not reach the individuals inside the home. Upon arrival, officers found at least one person on the floor and called for immediate medical assistance. Unfortunately, both individuals were confirmed deceased.
The investigation currently points towards a domestic-related incident, and the authorities are treating this as a potential murder-suicide. The Medical Examiner’s Office will make the final determination on the cause and manner of death.

STORY 6: Long COVID Linked to Inflammatory Protein, Study Finds
Cambridge University researchers have found a potential link between Long COVID and high levels of the inflammatory protein interferon gamma. The groundbreaking study suggests that IFN-γ could serve as a biomarker for Long COVID fatigue, paving the way for improved diagnosis and treatment.
The comprehensive study followed Long COVID patients for over two years. It discovered a persistent production of IFN-γ correlating with ongoing symptoms. This research is significant given the skepticism surrounding Long COVID, despite an estimated 1.9 million people in the UK suffering from it.
The research identifies specific immune cells that produce IFN-γ and observes a decrease in symptoms as IFN-γ levels drop. While vaccinations may help clear the virus, effective therapies remain a necessity.
The study also suggests that IFN-γ could help classify Long COVID subtypes, leading to more personalized treatments. Gaining a deeper understanding of Long COVID could equip us with vital knowledge for future pandemics.
STORY 7: New Study: 4 in 10 Americans Know Someone Who Died of Drug Overdose
A staggering four out of ten Americans know someone who has died from a drug overdose. This alarming statistic comes from a recent study by non-profit organization RAND.
The research found that 42.4% of participants knew at least one person who had overdosed, translating to an estimated 125 million American adults. Furthermore, one in three respondents stated that their lives were disrupted by the death.
"The experiences and needs of millions of survivors of an overdose loss largely have been overlooked," said Dr. Alison Athey, a behavioral scientist at RAND.
The study also revealed that exposure to overdose deaths was more common among women, married individuals, U.S.-born participants, and urban dwellers. Disturbingly, 13% of respondents reported significant life disruption due to an overdose death.
In 2022, over 109,000 people died from a drug overdose, bringing the total since 2000 to more than 1.1 million.
We’ll have final thoughts after this.
