One of the many things I love about baseball is the long narrative arc of a season, and the unexpected twists that occur over its six-month span.

It took the Boston Red Sox the equivalent of more than two full baseball games to win one last night. Or, more accurately, this morning.

The Boston Red Sox were in danger of hitting a season high losing streak, already having lost four straight, and they were trailing the Toronto Blue Jays 3-2 heading into the seventh, still showing few signs of being able to deliver with runners in scoring position.

The Boston Red Sox got outscored 23-3 in the first two games of their horrific home series against the Baltimore Orioles, and while they were able to cut down on the runs scored against them in the finale yesterday, the offense continued to produce offensive results, offensive in the sense of offending the fans who had to sit and watch the Red Sox strand 13 runners and muster just one measly run in a 2-1 loss at Fenway Park.

I mentioned yesterday that the Detroit Tigers weren't showing much fight against the NY Yankees in the first two games of their series in Detroit, but the Tigers changed that literally in a brawl-filled 10-6 win over the Yankees in the series finale yesterday.

The Boston Red Sox knew they'd have a tough time scoring runs against Cleveland Indians ace Corey Kluber last night, and indeed that was the case, with Kluber striking out twelve. But Kluber did give up a solo home run to Mitch Moreland in the fifth inning and ultimately the Red Sox came away with a 6-1 win.

I would so much rather be leading the sports report with news about the Red Sox today, but I can't because Boston Celtics GM Danny Ainge dropped the equivalent of an atomic bomb on the basketball off-season with the news that he had traded all-star point guard Isaiah Thomas to the Cleveland Cavaliers for their all-star point guard Kyrie Irving.

It was too little too late for the NY Mets as they tried to stave off a four game sweep in their crosstown series with the NY Yankees at Citi Field last night.

On a night when the Boston Red Sox honored the Impossible Dream team of 1967 that single-handedly revived baseball in Beantown, winning a pennant in a year when no one expected them to, it's perhaps fitting that the 2017 Boston Red Sox won a game that looked for most of the evening like a certain loss.

It's not quite as rare as viewing a solar eclipse, but most baseball fans measure the time between seeing a triple play in years, and getting to see one live? Well, you can be a season ticket holder, attend dozens of games a year for many years, and never see one unfold. So the lucky folks at Fenway Park last night will be saving their ticket stubs after watching the Boston Red Sox turn their first triple play in six years in a wild 10-4 win over the St. Louis Cardinals.
