Last Saturday the 40th annual Take Back the Night, a march and rally against gender-based and sexual violence, was held in Midtown Sacramento Diversity/Identity reporter Kenda L. Rivera covered the event.

This week on The State Hornet News Podcast, podcast editor Will Coburn talks with professor of hospitality and tourism Abhijeet Shirsat about his research into social media, fake news and how the two interact. 

Shirsat recommends a more hands-off approach to handling fake news. Shirsat said any interaction with fake news results in positive results from the algorithms that determine what social media users see. Shirsat also had tips to help users develop more healthy social media usage habits.

Last week, Tyler Perry opened his first studio in downtown Atlanta, making him the first Black person to fully own a film studio, but is this the best thing he could be doing in his community? 

Shiavon and Adria Watson had an impromptu podcast live from the State Hornet Newsroom where they talked about Perry’s impact in his community, his influence on pop culture and how Black women are portrayed in Hollywood.

Stinger Esports Director Donna “BasicTaq” Walters, director of business administration for Sacramento State’s Associated Students, Inc., co-founded the team in the fall of 2017. The team is now competing at the collegiate level in Overwatch and League of Legends. In this podcast, Walters talks about the history of the team and their goals for expanding to add a broadcast team as well as getting a location for practice on-campus and how the team works to maintain an inclusive community in Stinger Esports. 

Walters is also in the process of pushing to add esports to the Big Sky Conference and talked about her hopes for being added.

Part two of Shiavon’s conversation with Stevante Clark, carrying on after last week’s episode. In this episode, Shiavon and Stevante talk about mental health in the Black community and what Stevante learned about it after his brother Stephon Clark was shot and killed by police in 2018.

Shiavon and Stevante then discuss how Stevante hopes AB 392, the “Stephon Clark Law” signed by Gov. Newsom) will cause police officers to think twice before using lethal force ,what the two are looking for in a presidential candidate and what reparations look like to them.

At the start of the 2019 football season, six of the Sac State football team’s walk-on players were surprised with scholarships. Normally, walk-on players have to get by with their own money while practicing and playing nearly full time while in school, so being awarded a scholarship is both a status symbol and a massive financial help. For this episode, defensive back and surprise scholarship recipient Abel Ordaz told us what he learned playing at Sac State as a walk-on.
