The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of Houston News
A lot can happen in a week. Some of it good. Some of it bad. Some of it downright ugly. When faced with intriguing developments in the week’s news, we turn to our rotating panel of “non-experts” to parse The Good, The Bad and The Ugly of it all.
This week, our panel weighs in on the results of the latest Houston Area survey, which suggests Houstonians are less concerned with crime than they have been in years and that African Americans are more likely to mistrust the police than other Houston-area communities. Plus, they weigh in on the Texas House voting to rewrite the U.S. Constitution.
On today’s panel: Kyrie O’ Connor, free-lance writer; Marco Roberts, president of the Log Cabin Republicans of Houston; and Wayne Ashley, academic adviser, digital media strategist and editor of TexasLeftist.com.
Son of Bum
Wade Phillips is about as much a part of Houston football as you can get. While he’s just signed on with the Los Angeles Rams to be their defensive coordinator, he played college football at the University of Houston, coached high school football in the area, was defensive line coach with the Oilers, served as defensive coordinator and interim coach of the Texans, and – of course – is the son of legendary Oilers coach Bum Phillips.
The latter is the subject of his new memoir Son of Bum: Lessons My Dad Taught Me About Football and Life. He’ll sign copies of it Saturday (May 6, 2017) at 2 p.m. at the Barnes and Noble in River Oaks. Michael Hagerty talked with Phillips to find out what it was like being the son of Bum.
