This is Judy Gaman, author of the award winning book Age to Perfection: How to Thrive to 100, Happy, Healthy, and Wise and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Each day I bring you one new tip that will help you stay young and vibrant. What in the world is "pregnancy brain?" A new study focused on changes to working memory during pregnancy do show a small effect on the brain, though other studies show no negative impacts whatsoever—especially in the long-term. There's actually growing evidence that being pregnant makes women more organized and smarter. It makes sense, though, since pregnant women and new mothers have a lot more to worry about and think about — for their brains to keep up they may even be getting a boost. Each day I bring you one new tip that will help you stay young and vibrant. We all know the five senses. Sight, smell, taste, hearing, and touch—but did you know that those are just the beginning of our sensing capabilities? Our bodies have many other senses too. Balance, temperature, and time, as well as proprioception the body awareness that helps us not walk into things all the time and nociception, our sense of pain. Doctors suggest that these powerful abilities our bodies regulate are more important for our functioning that the well-known others, but they largely go unnoticed. But if you grab it in five seconds, it's ok, right? The five-second-rule isn't a real thing. Bacteria can contaminate a food within milliseconds. Mythbusting tests show that moist foods attract more bacteria than dry foods, but there's no "safe duration." Instead, safety depends on how clean the surface you dropped the food on is. Whether you eat it or not after that is up to you, but if the people that walk on that floor are also walking around New York City, for example, we wouldn't recommend it. Well, for one month, scientists fed dozens of people candy bars containing 10 times the usual amount of chocolate, and dozens of others fake chocolate bars. When they counted the zits before and after each diet, there was "no difference" between the two groups. Neither the chocolate nor the fat seemed to have any effect on acne. DOC SHOC
Do you breast feed or formula feed? The argument over which is best has been going on for years. Obviously, if a mother is able and willing, breastfeeding is the best option. However, in some cases, formula is needed. Soy based formulas are used to help sooth colicky babies. However. scientists at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) found that soy formula use was linked to severe menstrual pain in early adulthood. Women who drank soy-based formulas as an infant were 50% more likely to have severe menstrual pain than those who didn't. It has also been linked to a higher risk of developing endometriosis. Because of this, scientists are cautioning parents to only use soy formula if necessary. Learn More!

Today's tip is all about learning to listen to your body. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. We tend to get so busy these days that we forget to slow down and hear what our body is saying. Did you know that most people tend to eat when they're really just thirsty. This causes a flood of unnecessary calories. Another common thing people ignore is when the body tells you it's tired. That's not the time to get on social media or glue yourself to the tube. Nope – this is when you sleep. Ignoring your body and the things it's trying to tell you will only lead to bigger issues later on. If you're too busy to listen to your body, I guess you have time for a major illness, because ignoring symptoms never pays off. Listen to your body and improve your chances for a longer and healthier life. Some workouts have multiple benefits. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Today's tip is all about getting your workout in while you improve your living condition. That's right – I'm taking about cleaning your house. Need to work out those arms, fold the clothes and beat out that rug. If legs are your problem areas, practice your squats while you clean the windows. And cleaning floors are a great way to give your abs a killer workout. Grab that vacuum or mop and get busy. If you live in a two story house, you have a built in stair stepper. Make multiple trips up and down and see your derriere shrink before your eyes. Not only will household chores keep you fit, a clean house is great for mental health too. And, cleaning can be a great family affair - so enlist the spouse and kids and work out together. When it's all done you can reward yourself by going to the movie and relaxing. You can find more Stay Young Medical Minutes at StayYoungAmerica.com that's StayYoungAmerica.com

When's the last time you had a date. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Today's tip is all about the incredible benefits of dates. I'm not talking about the Friday night kind of date. No – let's talk about that small, sweet fruit that often gets overlooked. Packed with nutrients, dates contain oil, calcium, sulfur, iron, potassium, phosphorous, manganese, copper and magnesium. Some experts say that a date at breakfast will keep constipation at bay and help prevent colon cancer. Because they're naturally sweet, dates are a great pick-me-up in the afternoon, giving you a much needed energy boost for the end of the work day. And if you suffer from seasonal allergies, the trace minerals in Dates may give you some relief. Want a little pecan pie? Stuff a date with a pecan for a tasty treat.
