  • #962: MM- Let's Talk Adrenaline

You hear your home alarm going off in the middle of the night, how do you jump out of bed like you've already had a full night's rest? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young medical minute. We've all been there. We are put in a stressful situation and our bodies somehow know what to do to keep us alert. How? The answer is adrenaline, a hormone secreted by the adrenal glands. It puts our body into fight or flight-giving us mental focus, decreased pain, and in some cases increased strength. This is called an adrenaline rush and usually occurs during extreme excitement, stress, or fear. Although some people like the feeling of an adrenaline rush, constant adrenaline production can cause health problems like: high blood pressure, weight gain, and heart disease. • #961: MM- Air Pollution Linked to Diabetes

Air pollution only effects people with asthma, right? Think again. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young medical minute. A new study out of Washington University School of Medicine found a link between air pollution and diabetes. Even levels of pollution said to be safe have been linked. The study found that pollution can actually trigger inflammation in the body and reduce insulin production. This means that the sugar in the body is not properly converting to energy, causing higher sugar levels. Although the risk is still higher for lower income countries with high pollution, the US still has a moderate risk of pollution related diabetes. Be sure to check your air quality daily and take precautions when pollution is high. • #960: MM-The Dangers of Nitrates

Beef jerky and salami lovers, I have some bad news. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young medical minute. New research out of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine found a link between eating processed meats and mania-also known as extreme changes in mood. So, what gives? What's wrong with processed meats? Well, most contain nitrates-which are known to cause neurodegerative diseases when consumed in high amounts. Three studies were completed for the research-one with humans, two with rats. All of the studies had the same outcome. Processed meats with nitrates led to manic episodes in both species. Make sure to read the labels before buying your favorite meat snacks look for ones that say nitrate free. • #959: MM- Eating Nuts Affects Sperm Quality

Are you trying to have a baby? Men, listen up! This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young medical minute. Infertility affects nearly one in seven couples worldwide. A new study presented at the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology annual meeting found that eating nuts regularly can affect sperm quality. The study consisted of one hundred and nineteen men ages eighteen to thirty-five. The men were split into two groups. One made no dietary changes, while the other added two ounces of mixed nuts to their daily diet. The group who consumed nuts had increases in sperm count, motility, vitality, and morphology. Although more studies need to be completed, this provides scientists with a better understanding of how diet can affect fertility. • #958: MM- Tips on How to Help Someone With Heatstroke

Man, is it hot or what? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young medical minute. Summer is upon us and the heat waves keep coming. Heat stroke can be deadly and it is important to recognize the symptoms. These can include: elevated body temperature of one hundred and three degrees Fahrenheit or higher, hot skin, headache, dizziness, nausea, fainting, confusion, and a racing pulse. The CDC recommends calling 911 right away. This is a life-threatening illness. DO NOT give the person experiencing heat stroke water. It is important to move them to a cool place. While you wait for help, try to cool the person off by applying cool washcloths to their face and neck or by giving them a cool bath. Stay safe this summer and take breaks from the heat. • #957: MM- A Few Ways to Decrease Sugar Intake

Let's talk about sugar. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young medical minute. It seems like foods with a high sugar content are the cheapest and easiest on the go snacks. Unfortunately, too much sugar can lead to heart disease, type two diabetes, obesity, and a ton of other health problems. The best way to decrease sugar intake when you are on the go is to pack ahead. Instead of reaching for a bowl of cereal in the morning, try hard boiling a couple of eggs the night before. You will find that the protein in the eggs will give you more long-lasting energy than the sugar in the cereal. Also, instead of grabbing a candy bar for an afternoon snack, pack a couple of bags of vegetables and fruit. Although fruit contains sugar, natural sugar is healthier than processed. • #956: MM- The Dangers of Drinking While Taking the Pill

Ladies, are you on the pill? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young medical minute. The birth control pill is often an easy and safe way to prevent pregnancy. The pill is ninety-one to ninety-nine percent effective. But, did you know that the pill can affect the way your body metabolizes alcohol? That's right, it can actually cause alcohol to metabolize more slowly which causes the effects to last longer. This is because the liver has to metabolize the hormones and the alcohol at the same time. Although alcohol does not affect the effectiveness of birth control, it can intensify the effects of alcohol which can lead to risky sexual behavior. It is important to drink responsibly and to talk to your doctor if you begin to show symptoms of alcohol dependence. • #955: MM- You Fingernails May Hint at Health Problems

Have you ever noticed the "little moon" on the bottom of your finger nails? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young medical minute. That "little moon" is called the lunula and is the rounded shadow on the base of the finger nail. You may think nothing of it, but the lunula can actually tell you and your doctor a lot about your health. If the lunula is absent, it may be a sign of malnourishment, anemia, or depression. A blue lunula may be sign of Wilson's Disease, a genetic disease that causes a large amount of copper to develop in the body's vital organs. If your lunula has a reddish halo, it could be a sign of COPD, heart failure, psoriasis, chronic hives, collagen vascular disease, or carbon monoxide poisoning. Talk to your doctor if you notice changes in your lunula. This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine.
