  • #526: Prescription Drug Abuse Epidemic

Prescription drug addiction is a major epidemic in our society now. Did you know that the most commonly abused prescription is opiates (like hydrocodone)? Well, prescribed opiods activate the same areas of your brain as heroin!!! That's VERY dangerous to get a habit of abusing---in fact, just abusing 1x can be fatal! Try to combat this addiction process by avoiding pain meds at the doctor, and ask what other options are available to you (like NSAIDS).

  • #524: Predicting Future Drug Addiction

A new study out of Stanford suggest that with a FMRI scan we can take note of some of the same chemical reactions that are found in drug seekers---making it likely that if you posses those reactions at a young age, you will develop a drug addiction (or at least risky drug seeking behaviors). Further studies need to confirm the results, but can you imagine what the future holds if we can target a drug problem BEFORE it starts?

MUSIC FOR DOC SHOCK (JIM) THAT MUSIC MEANS ITS TIME FOR DOC SHOC. A TIME WHEN WE FIND SOMETHING SHOCKING IN THE NEWS OR WE'RE SHOCKED IT MADE THE NEWS.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in both male and females with more than 600,000 deaths each year just here in the US. When someone suffers a heart attack, the good tissue is replaced with scar tissue. This stiff scar tissue affects the hearts ability to function properly. A new study may give a path to growing new heart tissue. Researchers at University of North Carolina and a group at Princeton University discovered a way to reprogram cells called fibroblasts into healthy heart muscle cells. There is still more work to do, but this is a significant step in saving lives.

Daily consumption of a certain form of curcumin improved memory and mood in people with mild, age-related memory loss. Researchers at UCLA performed a double-blind, placebo-controlled study involving 40 adults ages of 50 and 90 years who had mild memory issues. Participants were randomly assigned to placebo or 90 milligrams of curcumin twice daily for 18 months. People taking curcumin improved by 28 percent on their memory tests.
