  • Somos - Mexican Food that’s Plant-based, Non-GMO, Gluten-free

This episode is brought to you by Sendlane.

Somos is on a mission to bring the best of Mexican food to the world, says Miguel Leal, Founder and CEO of Somos.

Authentic, contemporary Mexican cuisine is no stranger to restaurants - particularly in larger cities - but it's missing from store shelves, Miguel explains. That frustration led to the creation of Somos.

"I think there are great brands that do a really good job marketing Tex-Mex and Cal-Mex foods on the shelf," Miguel says. "And then there are other great brands that do a good value proposition for Mexican food. But we didn't see any brands that represented it the way we want it to come through on the shelf."

That vision was plant-based, non-GMO, gluten-free with simple ingredients and strong nutritional values, he says. The challenge was that the supply chain for those items didn't exist in Mexico.

"I almost feel like we were starting from scratch, and it took a lot of trust on our suppliers and our family farms, on our manufacturing partners to believe in this project," he says.

Once the products were initially created, Somos pushed its customers for as much feedback as possible to get the items as perfect as possible.

"Probably my favorite piece of feedback has been from people who have received our boxes, people that have tried our product have told me this reminds me a lot of what my grandma used to send me from Mexico," Miguel says.

The COVID pandemic caused several issues to the startup of the brand, Miguel says, as the founders were unable to have face-to-face meetings with suppliers and retailers - a vital strategy considering the brand's mission to sail uncharted waters.

In Part 1, Miguel talks about:

    * Gratitude for symbols of support and love his family gave him before he married. * The mission of Somos. * The disconnect between Mexican food in restaurants and on grocery shelves. * The challenge of finding the right ingredients through a reliable supply chain. * How the COVID pandemic affected the business. * How the Mexican labor market has helped on the supply chain side.

  • Spicewell - Consume Vitamins and Nutrients with Your Food

This episode is brought to you by Yotpo.

An essential key to success in the CPG marketplace is being disciplined and knowing which audience you're speaking to, says Raina Kumra, founder of Spicewell, a nutrient-dense salt, and pepper brand.

For Spicewell, the ideal customer is the person responsible for the household nutrition, she says.

"At the end of the day, we're not a supplement - we are a food - but we are a nutritious, nutrient-dense food," Raina says.

It took more than 30 attempts to find a recipe that worked for Spicewell. Raina used her two children as tasters along the way, eventually finding a blend they enjoyed.

That blend includes plenty of organic vegetables such as broccoli, spinach, kale, pumpkin, sweet potatoes, sunflower seeds, and mushrooms. Each provides vitamins and nutrients that are better absorbed when consumed with food.

Raina says reviews and social sharing are critical as a new small business owner. Likewise, salt and pepper are only the beginning for Spicewell. Other seasoning mixes are planned, including a taco seasoning with an even greater vitamin profile.

Her words of wisdom to fellow entrepreneurs going through the stress of growing a brand: "Just take a deep breath, eat as healthy as you can today, and drink a lot of water."

In Part 2, Raina talks about:

    * Advice for other brand owners considering creating a new product. * How to communicate with different audiences. * Why moms are the prime constituent. * Why vitamins and nutrients are best absorbed during meals rather than in pill form. * The importance of turmeric. * A short tour of the brand's website. * The importance of dealing with stress and anxiety.

  • Spicewell - The World's First Nutrient-dense Salt & Pepper Brand

This episode is brought to you by Yotpo.

Spicewell is the world's first nutrient-dense salt and pepper brand, but it took a series of family health emergencies to spark the idea, says Raina Kumra, founder.

Her husband underwent complicated knee surgery and returned home only to have her kids get into a severe bike accident the next day, resulting in a broken collarbone for her daughter. A woman whose career was spent mainly in the tech sector was suddenly a full-time at-home caregiver.

"I grew up Indian in an Indian household where we use a lot of herbs and spices whenever there's an ailment in your body," Raina explains. "I took some of that ancient knowledge that I remember my grandma passing down. I know that if you have kale and spinach and broccoli, it will help your body heal tendons and muscles and bones. I powdered it. I put it in my daughter's smoothies. I put it everywhere. I gave them every possible opportunity. Every bite that went into their bodies was an opportunity to heal them. And so that is what Spice Well was born out of."

The strategy worked, and her family recovered much faster than expected.

"As a mom, you're always hiding vegetables in their food," she says. "And I was like, 'Well if I can do it for a 5-year-old, what could I do for the rest of the American population who is not eating properly?' "

Turmeric proved to be the key ingredient, so Spicewell added it to its salt and pepper products. It's better absorbed when ingested two or three times a day with meals.

"If you use your salt and pepper every day after eight weeks, you start to feel an effect around your inflammation levels, around feeling brain fog, things like that," Raina says. "These things need to build up in your system. You can't just have one golden latte and be un-inflamed."

The COVID pandemic changed the company's original trajectory, as ingredient prices and shipping costs varied dramatically from week to week. Now that Spicewell is on its third production run, Raina hopes to enjoy better economics so prices can remain affordable.

"I think the more people who buy it, eventually we will be able to get the product down," she says. "But, you know, a large food conglomerate is only focused on the cogs. They're not focused on your health. They might put a lot of healthy tag lines on the label, but the ingredients are still the cheapest that they can find. And we were very particular about where are things came from."

In Part 1, Raina talks about:

    * Gratitude for a doctor who guided her and eventually joined her company's advisory board. * The unlikely journey of becoming an at-home caregiver and helping her family recover using nutrient-dense foods. * How turmeric can help with inflammation, mainly when consumed multiple times a day. * How the COVID pandemic affected the startup of the brand. * The thoroughness of testing and selection of ingredients.

  • Better Snack. Better You. - A Snack Your Family Will Love

This episode is brought to you by Mercury.

Challenges, road bumps, and opportunities are just part of owning a business, but if you have a desire and vision, you'll make it through, says Michele Revivo, founder of Spudniks and Better Snack Better You.

"You don't need to sweat the small stuff because if things don't happen, ultimately it's for the best," she says. "Just look at opportunities, take whatever opportunity, give it your 100 percent all, give it your 100 percent effort with anything you do. But if it doesn't work out. Be happy with it and know that it's for the best and move on."

The COVID pandemic sparked one such opportunity. Michele wanted to create a snack that was high in Vitamin D, which is known for boosting the immune system. She trademarked Better Snack Better You as the vehicle for this high-nutrient brand.

Likewise, Michele has a similar passion for Spudniks - her snack brand before beginning Better Snack Better You. The idea was to create a snack that could create memories for a family.

"It's building memories while you're enjoying Sputnik's - it's building memories with your family and friends while enjoying your snacks," Michele says. "Everybody loves to snack. We wanted to build a family brand that resonates with everyone."

Likewise, her words of wisdom for fellow entrepreneurs are also family-based.

"Life is all about balance," she says. "Don't be focused on one thing so much."

In Part 2, Michele talks about:

    * Her advice for fellow entrepreneurs when facing challenges and opportunities. * How the COVID pandemic sparked the idea to great a snack that had nutrients to help the body's immune system. * A rundown of the ingredients and nutrients in the Better Snack Better You products. * The reaction her kids have to the new snacks. * Her work with the Comfort Bears charity. * Why building memories is an essential goal with Spudniks. * The importance of work-life balance.

  • Better Snack. Better You. - A High Nutrient Functional Snack

This episode is brought to you by Mercury.

Popcorn and kettle chips might seem like familiar snack items, but how Spudniks and Better Snack Better You approach them makes a difference, says Michele Revivo, founder of the two brands.

"They obviously both have the popcorn and kettle chips product, but they are very different," Michele says. "Building memories with your family is what Spudniks is all about. ... Better Snack Better You was my dream about two and a half years ago. I wanted to create a better for you snack line for my children because we are kosher and Better Snack Better You is a high nutrient functional snack line."

Michele and her husband's journey into the snack world took some unlikely turns. The couple began in the vending business before adding snack catering to their services. They found almost immediate success selling kettle chips that are warmed and seasoned fresh at each event and kiosk.

When her husband decided to begin practicing the Jewish Sabbath, they had to change their business model because that involved eschewing work on a Saturday - typically the busiest day of the work for their business. They shifted away from retail into manufacturing - a space where they could better control the hours they worked.

"We put it in God's hands," Michele says. "Essentially, whatever was going to happen with our path or career path at that point was going to happen. And we ultimately knew it was going to be for the best."

In Part 1, Michele talks about:

    * Gratitude for her husband for being her life partner and business partner for 19 years. * The difference between the Spudniks and Better Snacks Better You products. * The journey of growing from an events company into a snack food manufacturing company. * Why the risks didn't feel as much as a leap of faith, but rather as their destiny.

  • Before the Butcher - Wow! This is Made from Plants!

This episode is brought to you by Ordergroove.

When consumers try food products, they have expectations about taste, says Danny O'Malley, president and founder of Before the Butcher, a brand that produces plant-based proteins that are gluten-free and non-GMO Project Certified.

"You have an expectation before you even try it that it's going to be good, right? Because if it isn't, you're not going to get it again," he says. "So when companies like mine are creating products from plants to mimic an animal-based protein like pulled pork, our job is to create a texture and flavor that is so similar that you say, 'Hey, wow ... this is made out of plants!' And that is the coolest thing to happen to somebody."

The nutritional content of a product is essential too. Many competing products have a high level of sodium, Danny says. Before the Butcher's burger has about half the sodium, though those competitors are now lowering their levels too - likely based on customer feedback.

"We look at that every time we create a product today - how do we reduce the sodium? How do we make these products as healthy as we can?" Danny says. "Because these products, and I know this is hard for some people to grasp, are processed. We can't make a burger out of plants without processing it. But for all those naysayers out there: Your beef burger? That's processed, too."

Tackling the affordability issue of meat-based products is another challenge for companies like Before the Butcher. The fact is that it's not cheap to make these products, Danny says.

"The meat industry, the dairy industry, they get subsidized by the government to keep prices at a certain level. We don't," he says.

To that end, Before the Butcher created a product called "Mainstream," which is intended to be a more affordable plant-based burger.

"The difficult problem today is we all know we're in a very strong inflationary period," he says. "It's extremely expensive to move these products across the country. Freight is through the roof. The ingredients coming to us are more expensive today than a couple of years ago. So we're trying to hold the line and not raise our prices."

As for advice he would give to others starting up a brand, Danny says the key is to distinguish yourself.

"Do something clearly different from your competitors," he says. "Our push was to offer greater variety, better nutrition at a more affordable price. And we've been able to create our niche area where we could attract the consumer and the retailers for our products."

In Part 2, Danny talks about:

    * Why taste and texture are both critical in their products. * The importance put on nutritional content - particularly sodium levels. * The topic of obesity and plant-based foods' role in helping control that. * The affordability issue with plant-based meat alternatives. * Advice for other entrepreneurs starting up a new brand or facing competing behemoths. * A tour of the brand's website.

  • Before the Butcher - So Good, You Can't Tell the Difference

This episode is brought to you by Ordergroove.

"Before the Butcher" really is a name that sticks out when a consumer first sees it. That's the intent, says Danny O'Malley, president and founder of Before the Butcher, a brand that produces plant-based proteins that are gluten-free and non-GMO Project Certified.

"The name came from the thought process that before you go to the butcher for an animal-based product," Danny says. "You'll think about our company and the plant-based products that mimic the animal-based products you like."

The brand features a variety of plant-based burgers, including ones that resemble and taste like beef, chicken, turkey, and even breakfast sausage. Before the Butcher also offers ground mixes that taste like Italian sausage and chorizo. Chunk products are also available.

"The big difference is ours are 100 percent plant-based," Danny says, "so we're offering something healthier for you and your body and healthier for our planet and healthier for the animals that aren't slaughtered when you're eating them."

Danny's journey began during his time working for a food service distributor. A salesman for Beyond Meat - a leader and innovator in plant-based meat - visited and got him interested in the product space. A few weeks later, he found himself hired to handle sales in the western half of the country.

"The hard thing about working for a startup then, especially in plant-based meats, was nobody knew what we were doing," Danny says. "Back then, I spend most of my time educating - not selling the product- but just talking to people and educating them that we were mimicking animal-based proteins because that's the largest consumer audience for any type of food product."

Thankfully, the conversation about how meat affects the environment and the planet isn't new. After talking to retailers and grocery stores, Danny realized the interest extended beyond a simple beef burger replacement, so he began pondering starting his own company.

"It's almost five years now - I can't believe how fast it's gone," he says. "But now, as I look back, you know, I was one of the early adopters of these types of products in the industry, and I like to consider myself one of the leaders and innovators in plant-based meats because I've been there and done that, I get it. And we're always trying to improve what we do daily."

In Part 1, Danny talks about:

    * Gratitude for a close friend who got him involved in the plant-based burger space. * The story behind the brand's name. * The unlikely path he traveled as he joined the plant-based food space. * Why education is the first step when selling plant-based meats. * How the lack of variety in then-available products sparked the idea for him to create his own company. * The key to success so far: When you consume Before the Butcher products and add it to comfort-food recipes, you can't tell the difference.

"We just cut out all the BS and all the fillers," Laura says. "Any product we have, if you see an ingredient on the list, serves a specific purpose. It's not just there to fill things up."

Keeping the manufacturing in-house also helps Henné spot issues with production the same day - a big advantage for a brand that promises to "talk the talk" and "walk the walk," Laura says.

"We say that we're organic - we don't throw that word around. We get the certification," she says. "And that was not fun to get in the beginning because we were bootstrapping, and that was just a cost that is difficult to pay for when you haven't even sold one unit yet."

Likewise, Henné Organics' work ethics and the trust they require of their suppliers also guide who they choose to support in the charity world.

"There are so many fantastic charities out there, but there are also some that the money is not going toward the cause," Laura says. "I am thankful enough to have friends and people in my life who have shared their experiences with me ... the good, the bad, the ugly."

The brand's website features products mainly focused on lip care packaged in black to lend them a luxurious look.

Laura says planning is essential when advising other entrepreneurs considering starting their brands, but action is critical.

"At least from my experience, all the biggest things that have happened with our business, whether that be positive or negative, I've not seen coming," she says. "I know that scares some people who are planners. ... But this is typically how life works, and a great example of that is COVID. I don't think anyone saw that coming and did not realize to the extent that it would happen."

To that end, it's best to take a few baby steps every day, she says. And be open to shifting and emerging opportunities.

"It might not be something that is packaged in it with a big red bow on your doorstep," Laura says. "It's never smooth sailing - it's always a roller coaster. ... Sometimes it's not enjoyable. That's very true. I was very stressed the first two years, more so than I think I've maybe I don't know if certain times, probably more so than I've ever been in my life, but I don't regret it."

In Part 2, Laura talks about:

    * The rationale behind the ingredients used in their products. * The pros and cons of outsourcing. * The need to hire people who want to feel like part of a family. * Her quest to find a charity or cause to partner with long-term. * A tour of the brand's website. * Her advice for others starting a brand.
