A visionary from Australia and now an entrepreneur of Port Rexton, Newfoundland, Martha Nelson brings together small businesses and the beauty of the island with her wonderful creation: the Skerwink Hostel. “It was already a tourism hot spot… but the tourism was very focused to a kind of an older retiree American market. And my sisters and I being backpackers ourselves thought, ‘Well this is an amazing spot’.” With the help of her partner Gavin, the two were able to resurrect the unique family owned hostel so they can breath life back into the tourism industry of Newfoundland. Budget tourism geared toward backpackers, hikers, nature enthusiasts, and generally a younger crowd, Martha’s mission of making a home away from home has been a continuous success. In this week’s #StartupPodcast, host Rivers Corbett talks to Martha about starting a family owned business in Canada, the obstacles HI Trinity- Skerwink Hostel has had to overcome due to its remote location, and how joining forces with other small businesses only establishes more growth and positivity.
