  • Sierra’s Story Chapter Twelve and so much more from Shellie!
Hey friends, Per my last report, we wrapped up the 5th Annual Pops and Keggie Kamp by returning the grands to their respective homes mostly intact and none too worse for wear. I compiled a video to capture the memories. You can find it here.

The truth is, the only casualty of the week came at the expense of yours truly. Yeah, there’s a story here..
I dislocated the ring finger of my dominant hand while tubing on the Fourth of July, the day before their parents left the grands with us. Ruh, roh. I immediately swam up to the boat and had my husband “set” my finger while I was still in the water. Please do not attribute that moment to anything other than the fact that I was in excruciating pain, my ring finger was literally pointing at my middle one, and I was anxious to get out of said pain, asap. It was adrenalin, pure and simple. I couldn’t have done it 20 seconds later.
Still, the injured finger did some major swelling and bruising and complicated Kamp in unimaginable ways. And no, I’ve yet to slow down to have it x-rayed. I’ve just been buddy taping it. If you want to scold me, you’ll need to join the chorus. LOL! I open with this story because some of you asked to know “all the things” about Kamp, and this is a good place to start. The truth is, their parents tried to talk me into calling Kamp off for my own good, and not try to do it with my “beefy” finger. That’s the name the littlest Kamper gave it, and it stuck! I couldn’t. The grands had been looking forward to this Kamp since the last one. Instead, my finger because yet another teachable moment.
I gathered the grands and explained that in order for Kamp to proceed, I was going to need help. And bless their little hearts, I must brag on them. Help they did, whenever they could.
There were, of course, many more teachable moments, but for the purpose of this post (and because I’m typing with nine fingers still), I thought I’d share an outline of our Kamp Theme and Devos along with a few pointers for anyone planning their own camp.
Our theme this year was “Stay LIT”  and our verse was taken from Psalm 119:105, “The word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” We had three days and four nights together without parents, hence three main points, one for each morning. You can see the points below along with my tips on teaching littles.

    How to Say LIT!
Monday- “L stands for Light” Our lights only help us when we switch them on, otherwise they are useless! Likewise, the lamp of God’s Word only helps us when it’s opened, or “on”. Knowing God’s Word is our lamp without living by its light does us zero good.
Tuesday – “I stands for Illuminate” – God’s Word illuminates our feet not our future! A lamp shines light where we are, not where we will be, not where we’re going. Illuminate is a big word, but we watched the area around our feet “glow” and they got it!
Wednesday – “T stands for today” – If you leave the well-lit path you won’t be able to see, even if you could see once upon a time. We have to choose the light of God’s Word as our Guide today!
    A few thoughts on Kamp—
~We generally have our daily devo and teaching after breakfast when they’re still gathered around the table.
~I purposefully prepare the devos to last no more than ten to 15 minutes and then we review via conversation all through the day. As we drive to different activities, or when we’re boating or fishing, I might ask someone to recite the verse and have another grand summarize the main point. I’ve discovered the point sticks best this way.
~I find props are huge when teaching littles. I used a lantern this year. We turned the lights down and it was easy to illustrate the points.

  • Sierra’s Story Chapter Eleven with tired but happy greetings from Shellie

Hi, friends! The 5th Annual Pops and Keggie Kamp is in the books. I look forward to sharing more pics and stories with you, once I recover. As it stands, that will have to wait for another day. LOL. But, seriously, I’m a very grateful Keggie, just a tired one!
As you can see, KenKen the Baby Friend had her own special Kamp shirt, white with black letters. But the group pic below makes me laugh because it looks like she is covering up the logo out of spite. (If you’re reading on a podcasting platform you can see the pics at shelliet.com)

    Miss Personality Plus

I have to wonder if it’s because she didn’t get to stay for the duration. (You have to be potty trained to attend Kamp. Sorry Kennedy! Pops and Keggie love you to pieces!)

A new podcast is up! And I must say, I’m perfectly delighted with your feedback. Sharing this story with y’all this summer has been such a fun adventure for me. My only fear is what’s going to happen when it wraps? Some of you, not naming names here, have told me I “better not” leave y’all hanging. Yikes! Can we live with the Gray family indefinitely? Hmmm… maybe we’ll have a “second season” next summer. Who knows? But all that aside, in this week’s episode of Sierra’s Story, Lollie drops Susan with a right hook that surprises everyone, Lollie most of all! What’s that about? And Sierra takes a calculated risk with a secret visit to see Charles and shut the door on the past forever, but will it be that easy? Tune in for those developments and a whole lot more! You can listen to the Story Table podcast right here or wherever you prefer to hear your favorite shows.

The weekend is upon us, have a good one! I hope you spend some of it in the Father’s House and all of it in His sweet nourishing Presence. There is simply no better place to be!

    Hugs, Shellie

  • Sierra’s Story – Chapter Ten with lagniappe from Shellie
Thanks for dropping by! It blesses me to no end that you’d take time to meet me here. I imagine you’re gearing up for the Fourth, too. It’s one of this family’s favorite holidays. We’ll give thanks for this land we love and count our many blessings.  Phil and I are trying to put up as much sweet in the freezer as possible before it gets too hard. It’s always a race, and a challenging one, but having that gold bagged up is worth it! This weekend I’ll serve a brimming crockpot of creamed corn to an appreciative crowd of happy family members. Yes, there will be butter, and bacon, and we’ll eat it like candy! (Speaking of good eats, did you see the Pepper Jack Shrimp Wraps in the kitchen? Have mercy! You’ve got to try them and get back to me.)
I’m also preparing for the 5th Annual Pops and Keggie Kamp that will follow the Fourth activities. Those of you who have been around here a while will remember the lovely chaos of Kamp when we host our grands without their parents. I’ll report on it when I recover. LOL! Here’s a pic from our very first Kamp, and then one from last year. I refuse to say time is flying because it’s just so cliché. Oh, wait. I just did.
(If you’re reading on a podcast platform, you’ll need to go to ShellieT.com for pics.)

Before I go, I’ll share a story I told on social media this week. I think it deserves a repeat here, simply because of the glory it gives our Good Good Father! It began like this…

I typed out a reply on a text thread with my bestie and my two favorite girls— my daughter and daughter-in-law.  Carey had sent us a YouTube link, “The Man on the Middle Cross Said I Can Come”.  (Type it in YouTube and worship with us.)

But, about my reply. I’m thinking someone else could identify with my testimony, that it could help you learn to nourish yourself in Jesus alone, so I’m pasting it here. Please consider watching the video first.
My testimony to the girls and now to you:
Yes!!!  The enemy used to be successful at making me feel like a broken record because I talk so much of the necessity of continually preaching the gospel of Jesus the Way, to myself first, every day, all the time— and then to others.
Every message I speak goes back to it and I used to think I needed to quit talking about it! (Didn’t I, Red? I can hear your amen from here.) The enemy lost that battle because I’m convinced of the universal need to hear this and the inability to hear it too much.  As the wonderful believer in this video said, “If I don’t preach gospel to myself I fall back on works!” Yes!!!
My Achilles heel is the tendency to fall back to evaluating what I’ve done or haven’t done as my access to God’s throne. I can still, after all this time, after all my preaching of this glorious truth to myself and others, I can still find myself judging my performance for the reason He is “pleased” to dwell with me.  I have to tell the devil he lies and run back to the throne ASAP with the Big Ticket in my hand.
I wasn’t “holding” my place in God’s favor because of anything I have or haven’t done, and when it feels difficult to sense His nearness and forgiveness because of my sinful act/word/or deed, it reveals to me that I was creeping back into that mindset, into trusting me for access. No!!! I stand in the favor of God because Jesus earned it and put me there.  Living preaching the gospel to ourselves is inexhaustible fuel for worship!
    Have a great day, friend.

  • Chapter Nine of Sierra’s Story and a chat with Shellie
Welcome, my friend! I’m glad you’re back. I’ve got one grand napping, and one occupied with a cartoon. That means my time is limited and there will be typos. Consider yourself warned. LOL!

You may have noticed that your happy hostess has continued to tinker with the format of this podcast/newsletter hybrid ever since I called it quits on live radio to make more room on my plate for family and ministry. You’re smart like that. So, where are we? Well, frankly there’s no “formula” out there for what I’m doing. Most podcasts are precisely that, audio. They don’t come with a newsletter. (And vice versa.) But, hey, I love coloring outside the lines. Always have.
    And so, I tinker.
I’ve recently been opening with show notes and then moving into our chat. Today, I’m flipping things upside down. I realize if you’re reading this on your favorite podcasting platform like iTunes or Spotify, it may seem odd to find the show notes opening like a newsletter, but if you’re reading this via email, or on the website, it will likely seem more natural for you to begin with the newsletter. I call that six of one, half a dozen of the other. That said, if you’ve been waiting for Chapter Nine to drop, feel free to scroll past this visit and find the audio clip below. It’s all good, either way!
(If you’re reading on a podcast platform, you can go to ShellieT.com to see the pics referenced here. THX!)
It took longer than usual for our summer temps to arrive, but they are here in full force. Unfortunately, Lake Providence is still swollen from the rains, docks remain underwater, and our lake remains closed to traffic. Summer isn’t summer for me until the float boat is in the water and water sports have begun, so I’m super eager for the lake level to return to normal. Hank is also eager to take his place back at the helm.

Meanwhile, my herb and veggie gardens are flourishing. Yesterday I harvested some cucumbers and a bit of fresh dill and whipped up some homemade refrigerator pickles. Here are some pics and here is where you can find that recipe.

Shiloh’s haircut is showing signs of growing and I’m still laughing about your feedback on that horsey debacle. One of your fellow community friends, Mr. Kermit, reminded me that the difference between a good haircut and a bad one is three days. Poor Shiloh. His is taking a mite longer! LOL!
The grands continue to grow as well, like weeds! It’s hard to believe I’m preparing for the FIFTH Annual Pops and Keggie Kamp, but I am! (Some of you will remember the first one.) There will be the usual lake activities, great grandparent visits, and farm fun, and of course it will all revolve around our daily devos where we plant God’s Truth deep in our hearts. This year we’ll talk about developing an ever increasing hunger for God’s word and our verse will be, “Your word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light on my path!” Psalm 119:105
On that note, allow me to leave you with a few words I penned recently contrasting the empty hope and divisive rhetoric saturating our public discourse and the sure and steadfast hope that is Jesus, Light of the World.

  • Chapter Eight of Sierra’s Story — With a humorous confession from Shellie
I hope y’all are enjoying Sierra’s Story. For newcomers to this podcast, I’m dropping one chapter a week this summer as a gift to my readers and podcast listeners! We’ll go back to regular programming in the Fall. For now, I do hope you’ll find the earlier chapters, catch up, and walk with us the rest of the way. In Chapter Eight we hear Charles Carpenter lay his cards on the table. He isn’t going anywhere. Now, what? We also meet Sierra’s mom. Their mother/daughter bond is a strange one. What’s that about? And about mother and daughter relationships…That heart to heart between Sierra and Lollie. It sounds like Sierra is talking to her younger self more than she’s talking to her teenage daughter. Tell me more, right? Join us as the story continues to unfold.

(Go to ShellieT.com to see the pics referenced below. THX!)
Hey friends, let’s chat…I hope this finds you and yours well. We’ve had more than our share of rain in the last couple of weeks. (We’re talking eight inches and there is more in the forecast.) Our beautiful bean crop is taking it on the chin along with many of our area farmers and friends. Everyone is trying to cut ditches and keep pumps running to get the water off as quickly as possible. Yes, it’s tough to see a thriving young crop go underwater and stay underwater for days. But. God. We know our Provider and He is faithful. The Beloved Farmer and I have seen many a farming season together. In the good and the bad, we praise Him, and trust His hand.
And with that, I think I’ll switch gears.
Our Shiloh has NHOI, Novice Horse Owner Issues. Allow me to wade into this with some backstory. We’ve all bad haircuts over the years. Amen? It might have been from a faithful hairdresser or a newly recommended stylist. Or perhaps it was from a family member who loved you dearly but wasn’t so good with the scissors. I’m thinking about you Grandma Stone, God rest your sweet soul.
One summer my sisters and I were visiting our grandparents in Natchez, MS when we began to complain about being too hot, a condition we attributed to our long hair. To our delight, Grandma promptly grabbed her trusty scissors and cut our pony tails off on the spot. Whack. Whack. Whack. Three girls, three cuts, problem solved. Who cares about trims being even? Mama. Mama cared a lot.
Years later I was a newlywed with long hair yet again. I remember mentioning to my beloved farmer early one morning that I was going for a trim that day, only I fell in love with some pictures in a glamour magazine while waiting for my turn in the chair. I was going for a cute and sassy bob with bangs, but something clearly got lost in translation.
Later that evening Phil came home from work. He was walking down the hall and calling for me when he turned the corner and came face to face with one extremely irritable Cleopatra.
“Don’t say a word,” I said. “Not one word.”
Which brings me back to poor Shiloh and his novice horse owner issues. The poor baby can’t say a word about his new haircut if he wanted to, nary a word…
I meant well. I did. I thought I would trim his mane and bangs to give them a healthier appearance. Only I didn’t get his bangs even the first time.  (I know it is called a forelock, but they’re bangs to me.). So, I trimmed a little bit more on one side. And then I didn’t think the other side was even, so I intended to trim a bit more there. But Shiloh moved rather quickly and made me botch that one even higher. I mean,

  • Sierra’s Story, Chapter Seven — with thoughts from Shellie

A big hello from the road, friends! I’m enjoying a much needed catch-up visit with my daughter’s family in Houston, so I’ll be brief because there are grand boys to snuggle. And yes, they’re getting a big old for snuggling, but as of now, they still indulge this Keggie! I snagged the following pics from his mother’s recap of their recent family vacation. (Including them here just so long time readers can see how much they’ve grown!) The boys loved seeing the Grand Canyon.

That said, I can’t leave y’all without some inspirational thoughts, compliments of Shiloh…
Someone in this pic had a big old time rolling in the mud this weekend. See the next pic for a clue. Keep reading for a story.

Although it took a while (Shiloh is a big boy!) I thoroughly enjoyed grooming him while he demolished his grain at last night’s feeding. It was my pleasure. It’s what I do.
Sweet believer, did you know Jesus loves to clean us up, too? It’s true!
We may be headed to heaven but as long as our feet walk this dusty planet, our souls will get soiled along the way.
Our challenge is in learning to keep returning to The Bread of Life for real food. By doing so we allow Jesus to wash us over and again in His Word. It’s His pleasure. It’s what He does!
Hit reply and drop me a line if you’d like. I enjoy hearing from you.
    Hugs,
    Shellie

  • Sierra’s Story – Chapter Six – And a chat with Shellie
In Chapter Six of Sierra’s Story we learn more about Charles Carpenter and the threat he poses to Sonny and Sierra’s fractured relationship. Will he crack their world wide open or will Sierra skirt the danger and steer them to safety? And then there are the twins, Luke and Lollie. Their drama may be a result of your average teenage angst. But what if there’s more to it?

Dear readers and listeners, I hope you can forgive the scratchy voice on the podcast. Everything is blooming around here and my sinuses are paying for it. I just couldn’t see skipping the story because I’m hearing from so many of you who are anxiously awaiting the next chapter and I can’t stand the idea of disappointing anyone. Other than the sinuses, all is well on the home front. Just busy. Way busy. I just finished tucking grandchild number six into bed for the night. We’re keeping Kennedy Lee (also known as Ken Ken the Baby Friend) for a few days while her parents and older siblings are at Lamb Camp in Arkansas. Lamb Camp! That was a new one for me. Our kids didn’t show livestock back in the day, so we’ve been learning about it through our grands’ adventures these last few years. Phil and I had never heard of Lamb Camp until now, but it’s a real thing. The kids and their parents attend together to learn more about the care and showing of their animals. Speaking of animals, Phil and I continue to enjoy our new venture into the horse world. I find checking crops on horseback is even more fun than mudding on a three-wheeler– and that’s saying a lot!

In other news, I got the cutest pic from a reader this week. Check this out.

The caption read, “Great beach read! It’s kinda like a normal conversation with my mama, sisters, and nieces!” Now, that made this little author smile, big time. I don’t do a good job of promoting my humor books, so it’s always fun when someone runs across them, and especially when they find a connection in their own families! Here’s a link to that book if you’re interested.
I’ll close now with a few words on prayer. Y’all take care and drop me a note if you want to chat.
“How Jesus Makes Friends out of Followers”
It’s never easy to settle down into prayer. And by prayer I mean anything beyond a “Good morning, Lord” greeting that would qualify as heart engaged communication. And by hard I mean consistently day in and day out hard.
The truth is we won’t live a crucified life that honors God and draw others to Jesus with a prayer life. The prayer closet will always be the first place we learn to deny ourselves, pick up our crosses and follow Him, because we pay for that prayer time with the costly exchange of our own want-to lists and to-do plans.
So, why do it? Because the payoff of His Nearness is worth every effort, every cost. Because it’s how Jesus makes disciples out of converts and friends out of faith-challenged followers.
    Join me at the throne…
    Hugs,
    Shellie

And now, let’s chat…If anyone enjoyed this rainy Spring, it was my herb garden. I have basil to spare. I recently told the folks on my Instagram and Facebooks walls that the abundance was stumping me and I could use some new recipes featuring basil. Wow. I’m still trying to gather all of the amazing suggestions. I hope to compile it soon and I’ll share when I do. For now, I’ll walk you through my basic basil pesto here. You’ll find a version of this recipe all over the web with only slight variations so here’s my disclaimer. I can’t really claim the basics as my own. The beloved farmer and I had my basil pesto with pasta at lunch today. It was both simple and yummy! I posted the recipe here: Basic Basil Pesto.
True to form, once our weather decided to warm up, it got down to business in record time. It is now officially hot, and that means— drum roll—  the boat is in the water and summer is on! Nothing says summer like watermelon to this country woman. I realize that’s one sad manicure in this pic. I’m blaming it on all the yardwork and gardening going on around here.

The only one happier than your hostess about the boat being back in the water would be one dog named Hank. Here he is grinning when we hooked onto the boat trailer!

I’ve had a number of people asking me what I’m writing on these days and what my next book will be about. I appreciate that interest. I do! The question has a lot of answers. LOL. First things, first.
Most of you know I’ve teamed up with another author and speaker, Chrys Howard, to launch a grandparenting lifestyle site called Rocking it Grand. Chrys and I are passionate about inspiring and encouraging grandparents to be intentional about sharing God’s love with their families and leaving a lasting legacy of faith. Towards that end, we’ve written a book releasing Nov.9th, 2021 by the same name, Rocking it Grand!

You can preorder Rocking It Grand right now, and for the record, we would be so grateful. In case you don’t know this, preordering is like a power-packed vitamin that Amazon swallows and understands to order exponentially more books. Preordering does other great things like encouraging Amazon to feature the book and that will help other grandmas inspire their family legacies. That’s a lot of power in your hands, dear reader. I ask you to prayerfully consider it.  If you think you may want to make it your go-to Christmas gift giver, do think about preordering now. You’ll be ahead of the game, and you’ll help spread the message! We can’t afford to retire from this dark world, dear friends. We’re commissioned to go into it with the good news that God was in Christ Jesus offe...

  • Chapter Four of Sierra’s Story — and thoughts from Shellie’s porch
In Chapter Four of Sierra’s Story we get a ring side seat to the turmoil eating at Lollie and we relive the tragedy of losing Brandon through Sierra’s eyes. I’m so enjoying your feedback on the Gray family! With permission, here’s a sample of such goodness that put a huge grin on my face.
Oh, Shellie! I was just, today, able to carve out enough time to listen to the three chapters of Sierra’s Story. Now, I feel as though I have been told to turn off the flashlight Mom can see lit under the sheets and put up the book I had intended on finishing if it took me all night. Drats!

Shellie, thank you! Your words are rich with life and your Jesus-voice adds to the richness of the story told.

You continue to bless and bless and bless. Only one complaint….it is hard to have to wait for the next chapter!

God richly bless you and yours.

And now, let’s chat…This may not be the wettest Spring on record around here, but it has got to be a contender. We’ve had quite the challenge getting in the fields between the constant showers. Here’s a little glimpse from our farm as I document taking lunch to the field. (As I tell the fam, someone has to! LOL!)  If you’re reading from the Apple podcast page or a similar platform, you’ll probably have to go to the website to see the pics and videos I mention.

Since this video was made, we’ve managed to get all of our beans planted. (Thank you, Jesus). Oh, and when I made it on social it had “Farm Music” with it, but copyright prohibits me from having the sound here. Shucks, it fit perfectly!
The men are now busy “spot planting”  problem areas that were sowed earlier but got too much rain. Let’s keep praying for all of those effected by this wet season. In this community alone we have people whose homes are being threatened, loggers who can’t get to the woods, and ranchers who are hoping to be able to grow hay for their livestock!  For all of our famers, and those struggling with the weather conditions, join me in asking the Lord of the Harvest to pause the rain.
We give thanks to You Lord, for You are good. Your Love is steady in all times, in every situation. We ask You to pause the rains, and in the waiting, we set our hearts to trust You. You see and You hear prayer. Your ways are right, and higher than ours. You are for us. Our strength is found in kneeling to Your Omnipotence. Blessed be the name of the Lord.
May we be found faithful to trust Him in the good times and the bad, for He abides Faithful to us in it all.
In other news, as of last weekend, I’m officially off the road as far as speaking engagements go. I’ll miss it because I dearly love looking into the eyes of women and talking to them about Jesus. You may remember that I used to travel during the summer months, too– until the Lord impressed upon me to learn to say “I can’t come now, but I’ll be glad to come later.” LOL! The rest and recharge is a good and necessary thing! I’m thankful I listened.
That said, I am available for virtual events through the summer because I can do them from home. Just yesterday I had the joy of spending a large part of the morning talking to a wonderf...

    More from the porch…
Hey folks, let’s catch up! Last weekend I pulled into Centerville, TX making mental notes of all I needed to do when I got home Saturday night in preparation for a houseful of loved ones for Sunday dinner. (The Queen of Us All was the guest of honor!) Full disclosure? My spirit was full from talking to Jesus all the way here, but this aging shell my spirit lives in was dragging. My first surprise was being greeted by a gorgeous bouquet of flowers and a ridiculously extravagant gift basket. (Thx, ladies!!!) After that the surprises just kept coming.
The last time I stayed at that beautiful ranch apartment, my BFF and traveling partner Rhonda Perry was with me. This time I was traveling alone. The last time the pasture full of horses kept their distance. This time I pulled on boots to take a late evening walk, expecting much the same. It was anything but.
I spent two hours surrounded by two dozen horses bound and determined to be petted. (Yes! I was careful!) They followed me along the fence line, reaching their heads as far as possible towards me, literally lining up and taking turns at being loved.

One of the sweethearts was determined to monopolize my time, even going so far as to nip at the other horses to keep them away. ! I affectionately named him Mr. Paint when I posted a version of this chat and all of their pics on my social media wall. Imagine my embarrassment the next day when the ranch manager noted that Mr. Paint was actually Miss Paint! Oops! Seems I made an assumption without checking the equipment! But, that wasn’t the best surprise. Anyone who knows me at all will understand the significance of this last pic.

That might not be a perfectly formed heart on Miss Paint’s head, but it’s close enough to seriously mess with me. Don’t even try to tell me my Jesus wasn’t in those moments with me. You’d be wasting your breath.
The next morning I got to speak to a beautiful crowd of women about my favorite subject– beholding Jesus! I love celebrating the way He does all the heavy lifting of transforming our lives when we live with our eyes fixed on Him. “And we all with open face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord are changed into the same image, from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.” 2nd Corinthians 3:18
Drop me a note if I can pray for you or if you have anything on your heart to share. I do so enjoy this community!
    Hugs,
    Shellie
