The Christmas story reveals a darker truth about how people respond to Jesus. When the wise men arrived asking about the born King of the Jews, Herod and all Jerusalem were deeply troubled because this represented a threat to the existing power structure. Jesus remains a threat today - not because he wants to harm us, but because he challenges our position as ruler of our own lives. He threatens our autonomy, finances, relationships, reputation, and pursuit of comfort. We often delay responding to the gospel because we know that making Jesus Lord will change everything. However, when we surrender the areas we're afraid Jesus will threaten, he transforms them and gives us something far better than what we were protecting.
