This year Hip-Hop celebrates its 50th anniversary as a genre. You can’t talk about hip-hop and not talk about the influence that Jamaican sound culture played on hip-hop as a genre. DJ Kool Herc, who is of Jamaican descent popularized playing records is between one another, using two record players. This music playing technique became the backbone of the movement in the late 70s and early 80s. While DJ Kool Herc isn’t the only accredited foundation member there are definitely other influences like R&B, Disco and poetry also contributed to the genre. In this episode, we discuss the connections and growth trajectory.

White Yardie is a UK-based Jamaican stand-up Comedian and entertainer. The viral comedian launched his first Comedy special titled Straight Outta Jamaica in 2017, and quickly became a sensation in the Caribbean community. He was nominated for Best Comedian 2016 by the UK Entertainment Awards. Best known for his social media skits, White Yardie is currently on his Coming to America Tour. I caught up with White Yardie midway through the tour to discuss his journey from St. Elizabeth, Jamaica to starting his online video skits and stand up career at the same time growing as a household name globally by entertaining the masses from a Jamaican perspective.

We live in a day and age, where anything on social media is taken at face value and can form an opinion based on a highlight without all the facts. In this mini episode, I share how I almost formed an ill-informed opinions that I was ready to record and after viewing the longer form content, I decided not to. 

It's a short reflection that I wanted to share with you on how easy it is to get caught up in social media clips, clickbait articles and the doomed comment section. It's a transparent moment that reinvigorated the responsibility I have to myself and this platform.

The show stars Meagan Good, Jerrie Johnson, Shoniqua Shondai and Grace Byers.  It follows the dynamic women and their friendship as they navigate their careers and personal relationships set in Harlem, New York. The show is culturally rich, relevant and relatable. But it also has some amazing cultural nods to Caribbean culture. Grace Byers’ character Quinn is of Jamaican heritage and the show highlights where her heritage naturally shows up  as it relates to situations in her life. We discuss these situations and why the writers did a great job intertwining her culture where it was most relevant.
