This week we dive more into a topic that affects us all to varying degrees and that can be difficult to talk about, doubt. Austin is a pastor at Vista Community Church in Texas and identifies as Young, Restless, and No Longer Reformed. He is also the author of the challenging and enjoyable book Faith in the Shadows: Finding Christ in the Midst of Doubt at IVP.
We talk about a number of ways that doubt can manifest and how we respond, and while we may not agree on everything, our conversation was highly enjoyable and we hope you feel the same way! And if you do, be sure to rate us 5-stars and share it with a friend (tag @thesubstancepod or #TheSubstancePod on socials).

It's been a minute since we've dropped a Reflects (shoutout to all our excellent guests lately!) but we're back this week talking about a common pitfall (and accusation) related to Bible study and public theological discourse, prooftexting. It can be easy to read one passage, or even a portion of a passage, by itself and come away from it with an interpretation that is unsupported by the context. And "prooftexting" can also be an simple accusation to lob at someone in a public debate in order to attack their credibility. On this episode we look at why it matters, how to avoid it, and when it is and isn't appropriate to charge someone else with it.
If you're listening, we love sharing The Substance with you! If you enjoy it, please consider sharing it with the people in your life.

This week we are excited to share a wonderful conversation we recently had with Tim Whitaker, Founder of The New Evangelicals, an online community for folks who are deconstructing their faith and finding themselves without an immediate spiritual community. We talk about a wide variety of subjects including Tim's story (which is eerily similar to several aspects of our's), how the Bible is used, the importance of honesty & humility, the danger of partisan politics, maintaining healthy relationships (and boundaries) with people we have strong social/political disagreements with, and more. And make sure you stick around for the story Tim tells at the end, probably the best answer we've had to a final question in the history of the podcast.
Remember, if you enjoy the episode, hit the 5-star button and send it to a friend! :)

We are very happy to welcome our friend Brett McCracken back for his fourth appearance on The Substance (and his third Malick film)! Brett is a longtime film critic, the Senior Editor for Arts & Culture at The Gospel Coalition, an author of 4 books currently, and a pastor at his Church in Brea CA.
Terrence Malick surprised and delighted film lovers in 1998 with The Thin Red Line for many reasons, in large part because he had not made a film in 20 years. What he delivered was beautiful, meditative consideration of war as natural phenomenon. The film is both tragic and hopeful and something that is particularly affecting to watch during a time where nations are engaged in public acts of war.

This week we are excited to share our conversation with Corey Nathan of the Talkin' Politics & Religion Without Killin' Each Other podcast. To everyone's delight, we did get into politics and religion and did not, in fact, kill each other. Corey shares his conversion testimony, talks about his relationship with Ravi Zacharias & RZIM and how he's processed things in the last couple of years, as well as living well with and loving the people in our lives with whom we do not see eye to eye on important things.
We hope you enjoy this episode, and if you do be sure to share it someone!

Felicia Song is an author, Westmont College professor, and cultural sociologist who studies the place of digital technologies in contemporary life. Having trained in History, Communication Studies and Sociology from Yale, Northwestern, and University of Virginia, her research is oriented around the rapidly evolving digital technology industry and how the adoption of social media and digital devices fundamentally alters the landscapes of family, community, and organizational life.
This week she joins us to talk about that work and her book Restless Devices: Recovering Personhood, Presence, and Place in the Digital Age (IVP). The books two main focal points are the questions: What kind of people are we becoming with personal technologies in hand? And who do we really want to be?
We hope you enjoy our conversation with Felicia! Feel free to call or email with feedback, and if you enjoy it, the best way to help us is to share it with the people you know.

Surprise! We're excited and honored to share a very special feed drop with you all today!
You may remember Phillip Holmes from our great conversation in Episode 70 where we talked about Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr., what people get wrong about them, and the importance of properly understanding power dynamics. He also cofounded The Witness (formerly The Reformed African American Network) with past guest Jemar Tisby, was an original host of their podcast Pass The Mic, where he met his wonderful, multi-talented wife Jasmine (you should get her books Mother To Son & Carved in Ebony if you haven't yet). Connections!
Notes for this episode (Season 1 Episode 3): In this episode of Make it Plain, Phillip Holmes and Taelor Gray discuss intellectual integrity. Malcolm X’s commitment to honesty, humility, and open-mindedness in the pursuit of truth drives us back to the Scriptures and reminds us of the posture every Christian should have.
Subscribe to Make It Plain on your platform of choice and look for the premiere of Season 2 on Monday, February 21st!
Visit makeitplain.co for more resources related to exploring Malcolm X through the lens of Scripture.
We love being positive on The Substance but we had some heavy thing on our hearts that we cover on this week's show. Longtime Christian rapper Phanatik (Brady Goodwin Jr.) recently has denounced the faith and we wanted to both look at his specific situation as well as consider the group of former leaders who have publicly left the faith over the last several years and see what we can learn from it and how we can best respond. That topic leads unfortunately well into our second one, Christian lament. It's something people are talking about a little more now (especially on social media, in response to unending injustices), but it's also something that may traditions are not particularly strong on. If lament has been a regular, healthy part of your religious tradition or personal piety, we would love to hear from you!

We are very excited to bring you a fantastic (extra long) conversation with hip hop artist, author, and activist Propaganda. We talk Hood Politics, the 10 year anniversary of his controversial track Precious Puritans, and all things Terraform. This was a blast and we are excited to hear what you think (especially about our final tangent about cussing).
